Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Manchester City (Last Week-2) The best home side in the Barclays Premier League stormed to an impressive 6-3 victory over top of the table Arsenal at Etihad Stadium. City have now scored 35 goals in their eight home games and are the only team with a perfect record on their own ground. Five different men, including the strike partnership of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo found the net as City seemed to score at will. The only downside for the winners was that Aguero limped off the field in the 50th minute and is now expected to miss a month of action. 2. Arsenal (LW-1) Though they still lead the Barclays Premier League, there were not a lot of positives for Arsenal as they fell 6-3 to Manchester City. The one positive that they gained in the heavy loss was a strong outing for Theo Walcott, who scored twice for the Gunners. The league leaders will have to play without Jack Wilshere for two games after he was suspended for giving the home fans the middle finger during the contest. 3. Liverpool (LW-3) Two more goals for Luis Suarez paced an impressive 5-0 victory for Liverpool over Tottenham. The Uruguayan striker now has 17 goals on the season to lead the league, despite having only played in 11 of his teams 16 games this season. Jordan Henderson, John Flanagan and Raheem Sterling also found the mark for Liverpool, who are now just two points from the top of the table. 4. Chelsea (LW-4) Two first half goals were enough to lead Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in a strong but not dominant performance at Stamford Bridge. Searching for scoring from their strikers, Fernando Torres found the net 16 minutes into the contest. After giving up the equalizer, Ramires found the winner in the 35th minute and Chelsea hung on to the advantage for the rest of the game. Petr Cech was called into action to keep the one goal lead at times in the second half and he responded to the task. 5. Everton (LW-5) Heading into the late stages at Goodison Park, it looked as though Everton was going to have to settle for a single point. However, three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game propelled them to a 4-1 victory over Fulham. After grabbing an early lead courtesy of a Leon Osman goal, Seamus Coleman Gareth Barry Kevin Mirallas all found the scoring touch to lead the home side to victory. 6. Manchester United (LW-9) Two goals in the opening 18 minutes, only three minutes apart, for Danny Welbeck was enough to spark a solid bounce back effort for United as they knocked off Aston Villa 3-0. Tom Cleverley scored the other goal for United, who havent lost at Villa Park since 1995 and showed a lot of life earning a quality victory. 7. Newcastle United (LW-6) A Yoan Gouffran marker was not enough for Newcastle to win their fourth straight home game as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Southampton. After a strong first half where they grabbed the lead, Newcastle struggled to get the advantage after the break and in the end gave up the tying marker. Hatem Ben Arfa came on late and sparked the team but in the end it was a point for each team. 8. Tottenham Hotspur (LW-7) The end came for manager Andre Villas-Boas the morning after Spurs were thumped 5-0 by Liverpool at home. By the time Luis Suarez made it 4-0 in the 84th minute with his second of the game, the crowd at White Hart Lane had thinned out to visiting supporters and those that stayed behind to boo the team off the field. They would eventually get the chance to show their displeasure but not before Tottenham gave up a fifth goal. 9. Southampton (LW-8) Jay Rodriguez fired home in the 65th minute to earn a point for Southampton in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle. After struggling and falling behind in the first half, the Saints came on in the second half of the game to earn themselves a point. The introduction of Adam Lallana after the half played a big role in why the visitors were much better in the second half of this contest. 10. Swansea City (LW-10) Nathaan Dyer was the entire story for Swansea in a 1-1 draw against Norwich City. Nike Air Max 1 Rebajas. He scored their only goal in the 12th minute helping them earn a point from the contest. Unfortunately, Dyer was forced to leave the game on a stretcher with an ankle injury before the end of the first half. Further tests would show ligament damage and not an ankle break which is at least positive news for the midfielder. 11. Hull City (LW-11) There were no goals, but two good goalkeeping performances on hand as Hull City and Stoke City played to a 0-0 draw. Allan McGregor picked up the clean sheet for the Tigers as Stoke managed 11 shots, two on target for their performance. Peter Crouch was the man victimized both times as McGregor kept the score level. 12. Stoke City (LW-13) Asmir Begovic had to be on his game to earn Stoke City a point in a 0-0 draw with Hull City. Ahmed Elmohamady and Yannick Sagbo both had good chances to crack the scoreboard for Hull but were both turned away by Begovic in the first half. Both teams had opportunities to claim the game but in the end they would each leave with a deserved point. 13. Aston Villa (LW-12) Before 20 minutes had passed, Villa was already down two goals and they never found their way back into a game they dropped 3-0 to Manchester United. It was all United, as striker Christian Benteke was not able to find a way to get Villa back into a game they lost very early in the first half. 14. Cardiff City (LW-15) When Peter Whittingham found the mark with a header, it turned out to be the only scoring in a 1-0 victory for Cardiff City over West Brom. Throughout the contest, Cardiff routinely had the best of the chances as Steven Caulker was very involved creating chances but wasnt able to increase his teams one goal lead. In the end the single goal was enough for all three points. 15. Norwich City (LW-16) Gary Hoopers 25-yard strike in first half stoppage time was enough to lead Norwich to a 1-1 draw with Swansea. Michael Turner had a chance to put the Canaries ahead in the second half but wasnt able to find the mark as the home team earned a point. 16. West Bromwich Albion (LW-14) A fourth straight loss, this time 1-0 at the hands of Cardiff City, turned out to be one too many as manager Steve Clarke was fired by the Baggies after the game. High expectations entering the season, after they shot up to eighth place last year, were not able to be matched by West Brom, who are now 16th in the table, two points out of the relegation zone. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considered to be a front runner to claim the job. 17. West Ham United (LW-17) West Ham had to hang on against bottom of the table Sunderland to take point from a 0-0 draw. Sunderland had more of the possession and controlled the action for the most part and it was the work of West Ham keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen that kept the scores level. Ravel Morrison was lively for the Hammers but was not able to be the difference maker in this game. 18. Crystal Palace (LW-18) Thought they didnt enjoy much of the possession in the game, Palace were in it right to end as they fell 2-1 to Chelsea. After they fell behind in the 16th minute, Marouane Chamakh equalized 13 minutes later for the relegation threatened side. The game was level for only six minutes before Palace was once again searching for a tying goal. They had chances throughout the game but were never able to find the second goal to possibly escape with a point. 19. Sunderland (LW-20) Its rare that a bottom of the table team should be unhappy with a draw, but such is the case for Sunderland who were held 0-0 by West Ham. Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley had the best chance when he hit the bar late in the first half. Jozy Altidore also had a chance to edge the game for the Black Cats but was turned away by West Ham keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. 20. Fulham (LW-19) Another tough result now sees Fulham second bottom on goal differential in the Barclays Premier League as they fell 4-1 to Everton. A Dimitar Berbatov penalty in the 67th minute evened the score but three late goals conceded meant that the Cottagers fell behind Crystal Palace on differential and into 19th place in the table. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (5) - A goaltending clinic tonight from Quick that started with a not a very busy first period. Quick only faced four scoring chances in the first frame, including a nice one-timer save on Derek Dorsett and two big saves on Mats Zuccarello - one that he creates by himself with a rebound off the glove that he reaches back with his paddle as it hits the post and the other with a terrific blocker save on the power play. He put on a show in the second, though, facing 12 scoring chances in the period, and making huge saves on Derick Brassard (twice), Brad Richards and Martin St.Louis. Quick looked like the 2012 Conn Smythe-winner in that period. The third was more of the same with big saves on Zuccarello, Richards and Marc Staal. Scoring Chances were 22 to 10 for the Rangers, but it was the Jon Quick Show tonight. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) - Not a busy game for Lundqvist, but he made a good save on Jeff Carter down the wall blocker-side and only faced two scoring chances in the opening period. BOSTON -- The regular season wasnt much of a struggle for the Boston Bruins, and neither was their first-round playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings. Air Force 1 Cheap Outlet . Tuukka Rask made 31 saves Saturday, and the defending Eastern Conference champions eliminated the Red Wings with a 4-2 victory in Game 5. After finishing the regular season with the best record in the NHL, the Bruins advanced to the conference semifinals against the Montreal Canadiens. "That series was much tougher than maybe the results showed," said Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who gave Boston the lead for good with 4 seconds left in the second period. "I think that we handled it well, we came into this series ready and we got the job done." Loui Eriksson opened the scoring for Boston, and Charas goal on a 4-on-3 advantage snapped a 1-1 tie. Milan Lucic also scored, and Jarome Iginla added an empty-netter. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored and Jonas Gustavsson stopped 29 shots for Detroit. The Red Wings scored only six goals in the five-game series. "Were not there yet," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, whose team failed to win a playoff series in two of the past three seasons. "The last two years, we battled to get into the playoffs. To me, thats a measure of where we are. Instead of battling for the Cup, were battling to make the playoffs." It was 1-1 when the Bruins gained a 4-on-3 power play thanks to a holding penalty on Johan Franzen just 22 seconds before Brendan Smith was called for cross-checking. On a faceoff in the Detroit zone, Patrice Bergeron lured two of the three Red Wings defenders toward the corner and then passed it across the ice to Chara, who one-timed it past Gustavsson. Not usually demonstrative, Chara felt this one was worth celebrating. "It was a big game and a big goal," he said. "So Im not afraid to show it." Lucics goal with 4:27 gone in the third made it a two-goal game. Detroit made it 3-2 with 3:52 left after Rask made two acrobatic saves but left the puck to the side of the net for Zetterberg, the Red Wings captain who missed two months with back surgery and did not return until Game 4. Less than a minute later, though the Wings were called for too many men on the ice, leaving them a man down while trying to finish the comeback. With 2 minutes left in the game, the Boston fans began chanting "We want the cup!" Next up: Montreal, which swept Tampa Bay. "Guys were never ever really talking about Montreal," Iginla said. "We know theyve won their series and theyre going to be next, but the only talk today was about thinking about Detroit and getting this series over." The Bruins won it all in 2011 and returned to the Stanley Cup finals last year before they were eliminated when the Chicago Blackhawks scored two goals in 17 seconds in the final 76 seconds of Game 6. Boston seems on its way for another long playoff run this year, finishing the regular season with the best record in the NHL. "We were playing a very good team, a team with a lot of experience, the President Trophy winners," Detroit forward Daniel Alfredsson said. "This is a team that was just playing better than us and we feel a little short." The Bruins scored a power-play goal 3:27 into the first period when Dougie Hamiltons pass bounced off a defenders skate to Eriksson in the slot. Rask earned an assist on the play -- his second career playoff point. It stayed that way until Datsyuk came in and scooped up a rebound 12 seconds into a second-period power play against Lucic for high-sticking. Notes: It was the first NHL playoff game for Red Wings D Xavier Oullette. ... Rask earned an assist on Bostons first goal, his second career playoff point. ... Jimmy Howard, who started in goal for Games 1-3 for Detroit, was the backup. ... Referee Steve Kozari took a puck in the face in the third period. The Bruins killed off 14 of 15 power plays in the series before allowing a goal after Lucics high-sticking penalty in the second. Air Force 1 Cheap Wholesale . The news came a day after the former New York Jets coach tentatively accepted the Bills contract offer. Ryan replaces Doug Marrone, who stepped down abruptly on Dec. 31.Rex brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the position that we feel will be a tremendous benefit to our players and the entire Bills organization, owner Terry Pegula said in a statement released by the team. He was very impressive during the interview process, as were many of the candidates to which we spoke. And we feel Rex is the best fit for our team.Ryan will be formally introduced during a press conference scheduled for Wednesday. The 52-year-old is a defensive specialist, and noted for a brash personality and having a deep loyalty to his players. Ryan had a 50-52 record, including 4-2 in the playoffs, in six seasons coaching the Bills AFC East rival. He was fired along with general manager John Idzik following a 4-12 finish last season. The Jets reached and lost the AFC Championship game in each of Ryans first two seasons, but failed to make the playoffs since. The Bills are already making plans to assist Ryan on offence.A person familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press that the Bills are finalizing contract discussions to hire Greg Roman as their offensive co-ordinator. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because Roman has not yet been signed.Roman spent the past four years as the San Francisco 49ers offensive co-ordinator, and was among the 12 candidates interviewed by the Bills last week. He is regarded as a good fit under Ryan, because the two share a similar run-first philosophy.Ryans hiring provides stability to a team that endured a tumultuous 10-month stretch, which began when Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson died in March. Wilsons death raised concerns that the franchise might relocate under new owners before the Pegulas — who also own the NHL Buffalo Sabres — purchased the Bills for an NFL-record $1.4 billion in October. Then came Marrones surprising departure following a 9-7 finish. Buffalo matched itts best record in a decade, but missed the playoffs to extend the NFLs longest active drought to 15 seasons. Discount Air Force Ones Wholesale. The second-year coach quit by exercising an opt-out clause in his contract that kicked in once the Bills were sold. Marrone, who will be paid $4 million this season by the Bills, had concerns of were where he fit in the teams hierarchy. The Pegulas had expressed interest in hiring a veteran NFL presence to oversee the teams football operations.Former Bills general manager Bill Polian was a candidate to fill the newly created position before informing the Pegulas on Jan. 1 that he preferred staying in broadcasting.Marrone, coincidentally, has interviewed with the Jets, where he previously served as the teams offensive line coach. The Bills became the first of six NFL teams to fill their coaching vacancy this off-season.Ryan was also a coaching candidate in Atlanta and San Francisco. In choosing the Bills, Ryan is following in the footsteps of former understudy, Mike Pettine, who left the Jets two years ago to become Buffalos defensive co-ordinator. Pettine spent a year in Buffalo before being hired to coach the Cleveland Browns. The Bills defence thrived under Pettine, and continued to be the teams strength under co-ordinator Jim Schwartz last season. Buffalo finished fourth in fewest yards allowed, and the defence produced three Pro Bowl linemen.Schwartz was a candidate for the Bills job, and his status is now uncertain under Ryan.Improving the Bills offence is Ryans top priority, and no different than the challenge he faced in New York.Buffalo finished 26th in yards gained last season, four spots behind the Jets. And the quarterback position was a concern for both teams, and involving two players selected in 2013 draft. The Jets faltered behind Geno Smith, who was eventually benched and replaced by Michael Vick for three games before finishing out the season. In Buffalo, EJ Manuel was benched after four games and replaced by 10-year journeyman Kyle Orton, who has since said he plans to retire.Manuel has two years left on his contract and is the only experienced starter on the roster.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
Manchester United could be close to signing Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata. Jake Odorizzi Jersey . ESPN FC reports that sources from both Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge claim that David Moyess struggling side is hopeful of securing the Spanish international by the weekend. Reports suggest that a transfer fee for Mata could reach upwards of 40 million pounds. Mata, voted Chelseas player of the year for the past two seasons, has found his playing time greatly limited this year under new manager Jose Mourinho and is believed to welcome the opportunity for first team football ahead of this summers World Cup in Brazil. Mata has only made 13 league appearances for Chelsea this season, registering two assists. Last season, the 25-year-old tallied 12 goals and 17 assists in 35 appearances. He has played in two of Chelseas Champions League group stage match-ups this season, meaning that he is cup-tied and, therefore, would be unavilable for selection for Uniteds Champions League knockout encounter with Olympiacos next month if he were to move. Chelsea actively pursued United striker Wayne Rooney this past summer, but their pursuit was rebuffed and Mourinho admitted defeat in his chase. Rooney is not believed to be involved at all in these current Mata negotiations, even though Matas name came up as a makeweight in a potential deal in August. Byron Buxton Jersey . PORTLAND, Ore. Cheap Old Skool Free Shipping . - Maximiliano Urruti scored in the final minute of stoppage time to give the Portland Timbers their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night. Futty Danso also scored for the Timbers, who were winless for their first eight matches of the season for the teams longest span without a victory since 2012. The streak was concerning for a team that went all the way to the Western Conference final last season. But Urruti came off the bench to snap it with a rebound from just inside the box as United goalkeeper Bill Hamid tumbled to the rain-soaked turf. There was four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game. The loss snapped a five-match undefeated string for United, which pulled into a 2-all tie with an own goal in the 78th minute. Portland also scored in the first minute, when Gaston Fernandez manoeuvred around Hamid and found the net just 34 seconds into the game. It was the fastest goal for the team since Portland joined Major League Soccer. Fernandez, who came to the Timbers earlier this year, leads the team with four goals. A boot by Diego Valeri from just outside the box was wide left in the 16th minute. Arnaud scored the equalizer for United in the 21st minute. His shot from far out appeared to deflect off a Portland player for an arching curl that was impossible for goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to stop. Danso put the Timbers back in front with a goal off a corner kick in the 38th minute. It was the defenders first goal for Portland since 2011. The own goal appeared to come off Danso after a header by United defender Cristian in a tangle in front of the net as the field was pounded by rain. Hamid played with his head wrapped after sustaining a nasty cut to the forehead late in the first half. The Timbers were coming off a 1-all draw last weekend against the Houston Dynamo, while United defeated FC Dallas in its last outing. Cheap Old Skool China . August 31, 2013 - Everton coming off their third straight draw to start the season. Comprar Stan Smith Baratas . The team scoreless in their last two. And questions being raised whether this was what life was going to be like post-David Moyes: exceptionally mediocre. It was hardly the start Roberto Martinez wanted for his Everton tenure. The product was altogether stale, with the headlines revolving around whom the team would lose in the transfer window. Two days later, September 2, became the most important day of Evertons season, the decisive moments, all coming in the last hour before the transfer window slammed shut. A last minute £27.5 million move by Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini seemingly plucked Everton of one of their most influential players. The return on investment exceptional, and the first domino had fallen. Within 60 minutes, central midfield duo James McCarthy from Wigan and Gareth Barry on loan from Manchester City had arrived. And the icing on the victory cake, Romelu Lukaku joining the ranks, preferring Goodison Park to the familiar confines of the Hawthorns. The moves lacked the prestige of Mesut Ozil to Arsenal, or even Fellaini to United. Upon further review, the moves were decisive, calculated and have transformed Everton from a team destined for mid-table mediocrity to a true contender for next years Champions League. Everton finished in the top four just once under David Moyes, the best Premier League finish in club history. It was a thin squad in 2004-05, with low expectations. The team finished with 61 points, a goal differential of minus-1 and absolutely over achieved. Tim Cahill was top scorer with a mere 11. It was a story of perseverance, hard work, and proof that every once in a while, the little guy could compete with the big boys. Everton remains a Premier League have-not monetarily. They have no Middle Eastern oil money propping up the club, nor an Olympic-sized stadium to call home. However, this time around, the team has genuine quality. The teams quiet confidence, patient approach and maturity was on full display in their 1-1 draw at the Emirates on Sunday. Even when falling behind, the game plan did not waver. Evertons resume speaks for itself. They are the only team with one loss, one of three teams undefeated at home and are on pace for 71 points. Theyve played a difficult schedule with a soft spot coming over the Christmas period. Everton play three of their next four matches at home, and play no team in the top seven until January 28 against Liverpool. While Liverpool and Spurs remain popular choices to finish in the top four, Everton is my choice. Five reasons why Everton can finish in the top four: 1) Centre-back consistency: Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin have been an under-rated duo in recent years. They have played every minute this season and are both in the top five in shots blocked, intercepted and clearances, leading a backline producing eight clean sheets. Both players have shown genuine comfort working the ball out of the back. The team, especially goalkeeper Tim Howard, is better off for it. 2) Defensive midfield strength: Managers all too often try to force their teams into playing a 4-2-3-1 despite not having the players to do so (ahem, Chelsea). Everton are a team built for this system. Lacking flash and flair, McCarthy and Barry have formed a complimentary partnership in the middle. The stay at home approach of Barry allows McCarthy to be more adventurous. Both are adept at tackling, with McCarthy a more creative influence. Its this all-important balance that allows the attacking midfield (Mirallas, Barkley, Pineaar) the freedom to get forward and play to their strengths. Role definition at its finest. 3) Lethal Lukaku: Every top team needs a game winner. Nikica Jelavic was that player for Everton 18 months ago, but has fallen off the deep end. Queue Lukaku. Eight goals in 11 matches for Everton, the 20-year old is a perfect fit. A true target man in every sense, he is as much a handful away from goal as he is inside the 18-yard box. The way he manhandled Nemanja Vidic, one of the most imposing defenders in the league, last week speaks to his ability to influence matches in a variety of ways. Jose Mourinho will not recall the Belgium international in January: a short-term coup for Everton. 4) Youth Development: Year over year, squad players need to step up and emerge as key contributors towards team success. Those players for Everton have been Seamus Coleman and Ross Barkley. Coleman always seemed a hybrid: a player without a true position. Whether hed become anything more than a depth player was a legitimate question. From the get-go this season, Coleman has made right back his own and few, if any, at the position have been better. Barkleys pedigree was never questioned. It was a matter of when, not if. His cutting edge, determination, and authority around the 18-yard box have drawn high praise. The 20-year old is an automatic starter and has put himself in the conversation for England in Brazil. 5) The manager: Many questioned Martinezs managerial worth, despite years of keeping Wigan in the Premier League with paper-thin squads and marginal talent. I never understood those doubting Martinez. No matter roster limitations, the approach of his teams remained the same: patience on the ball, commitment to possession and a tight squad rotation. With better players at his disposal, it has all come together at Goodison. Players know where they stand. Kevin Mirallas has been substituted in 12 of the 14 games hes started. And young Gerard Deulofeu has been eased into the team, emerging as a composed and confident player in recent weeks. Martinez has taken a hard working, blue-collar team and transformed them into an attractive side in short time. Martinez is the ideal man to lead Evertons evolution. Everton is not without warts. The possible January sale of Leighton Baines doesnt bode well, no matter how well Bryan Oviedo has played in his stead. The sale of Thomas Graveson to Real Madrid in 2004-05 had a likewise negative effect on the team. No team relies on the left side in attack as much as Everton with the English international in tandem with Steven Pienaar. As much as keeping Baines is a priority, adding secondary scoring is another area of need. Outside of Lukaku, no player on the team has scored more than two goals. Reinvesting the transfer window profit from September on another attacking player would be worthwhile. Chairman Bill Kenwright has acknowledged he must support Martinez. "The board has got to support the manager if we want Champions League." It may come sooner than expected, but Kenwright should put his money where his mouth is, come January. Theyve won at Old Trafford, beat Chelsea, and taken points from Arsenal, Liverpool, and Spurs. And the best is very likely still to come. Other Musings - A tough road lay ahead for Liverpool. The Reds play Spurs, Manchester City and Chelsea all away before the New Year. Compounding the issues of a difficult schedule are significant injuries in the squad. Captain Steven Gerrard is out up to six weeks (hamstring), in addition to the long-term absence of striker Daniel Sturridge and left-back Jose Enrique. Jordan Henderson (ankle) is also a concern for Sundays trip to White Hart Lane. These are huge losses for a team lacking requisite depth. The 33-year old Gerrard will be especially missed, keeping the midfield shape intact, as well as providing service from dead ball situations. Liverpool has scored 13 goals through set pieces – three more set piece goals than anyone else in the league. Rather than turning to Joe Allen, perhaps Rodgers tinkers with his formation, preferring to play five at the back as hes previously deployed this season. - How poor was Manchester Uniteds home loss to Newcastle Saturday? United completed the fewest passes in the attacking third (93) of any team last weekend. No other team had fewer than 100. In fact, United have created the 12th most goal scoring chances overall this season and only four teams have a worse goal scoring record at home than the reigning champions. - Some good news for Manchester United; the group stage results in the Champions League couldnt be better. As a top seed, United avoided the big guns, setting up a knockout stage matchup against Galatasaray, Olympiakos, Schalke 04, Zenit St. Petersburg, or AC Milan. Manchester City and Arsenal meanwhile, are left tempting their UCL fates against the top seeds, and clear top contenders in the tournament. Can United make like Chelsea of 2011-12, struggling in domestic play en route to Champions League glory? - Newcastle has been an on-field feel-good story this season amidst dysfunction off it. The latest gong-show: the Evening Chronicle reporting the club will charge newspapers exclusive interviews with members of the staff. Pay for coverage. Seriously. - Sunderland may be at the bottom of the table but in fairness, they are better than their position. Gus Poyet has done a wonderful job since taking over, finding semblance with a team his predecessor nonsensically added 11 players to. The Black Cats have been victim to poor officiating and missed calls on multiple occasions. Sunderland was robbed of a penalty claim after Sandro clearly handled in the box in a 2-1 loss to Tottenham. Law of averages, things will turn around. Dont see this team being relegated. @WheelerTSNgareth.wheeler@bellmedia.ca Stan Smith Rebajas . The Opening Day starter played 53 games this season hitting .192 with nine home runs and 25 RBI. They got one from Patty Mills, who scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Spurs charged out of the All-Star break with a 113-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. San Antonio is a league-best 21-7 away from home, poised to extend its NBA record for consecutive winning seasons on the road to 17. "Down a couple of guys, not being able to practice yesterday, and to be able to come in here and put together a 48-minute performance like this was great for us," said Tim Duncan, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds during a foul-plagued 38 minutes. "It was a big win for us, especially on the road against a very good ballclub." The Spurs played without six-time All-Star Tony Parker, who will be sidelined "for the foreseeable future" because of numerous aches and pains (including a bruised shin, groin strain and lower back spasms), coach Gregg Popovich said. The 13-year veteran point guard, who played 11 minutes in Sundays All-Star game, is the Spurs leading scorer and their only player averaging at least 30 minutes. "Were just trying to get him healthy," Duncan said. "I mean, players being healthy is so underrated. When people play through things and they arent 100 per cent, the season becomes a grind. So we want to be 100 per cent so that down the stretch and in the playoffs, when we ask him to do all that we need him to do, hes ready to go and carry that load on his shoulders." Blake Griffin had 35 points and 12 rebounds, Jamal Crawford scored 25 and DeAndre Jordan grabbed 18 rebounds for the Clippers, who ended a run of five consecutive home games that began with a four-point loss to two-time defending champion Miami. "Weve got a lot of work to do to get where the Spurs are and accomplish what theyve accomplished," Griffin said. "They kind of have the model of the NBA and how you want to run things. Guys can be sitting out with injuries, and it doesnt matter. Other guys are going to come in and do exactly what theyre supposed to. Its impressive." Corey Joseph started for the 13th time this season and had seven points in Parkers place. Backup shooting guard Manu Ginobili returned to the lineup and scored nine points in 14 minutes after missing eight games since Jan. Stan Smith Baratas Online. 28 because of tightness in his left hamstring. But centre Tiago Splitter was sidelined for the fourth straight game with a bruised right shin, and forward Kawhi Leonard missed his 12th in a row due to a broken bone in his right hand. All those injuries have presented a stiff challenge for the Southwest Division leaders, who are 8-7 since a five-game winning streak last month. They lead the Clippers by three games for the second-best record in the Western Conference and have two games left on their nine-game rodeo road trip. The Spurs, who came in leading the NBA in 3-point shooting at 39.1 per cent, took a 73-69 lead when Marco Belinelli drained one from in front of the San Antonio bench with 3:18 left in the third quarter. Duncan picked up his fourth foul less than 2 minutes later, but the Clippers never could regain the lead as Mills scored 11 consecutive Spurs points during a 2:26 span to help San Antonio build a 93-81 cushion with 8:46 to play. "He was great for us," Duncan said. "That fourth quarter, he really took over for that 5 minutes and gave us the lead that we needed. We were struggling trying to find points and keep the pressure on them, and he just completely took the ballgame over." Duncan got his fifth foul with 7:03 left, but Popovich kept him in there and the two-time MVP responded with a short hook shot and a 15-footer before Mills added a 3-pointer for a 102-92 lead with 4:35 remaining. "I think my fourth and fifth ones were not very smart. I didnt realize where I was, foul-wise, and I kind of got myself in trouble there," Duncan said. "But they werent able to take advantage of it, luckily, and we all played through it after Pop left me in there." CLEVELAND -- On his way out to the field for pregame batting practice, Jason Kipnis hung a hard right in the Indians clubhouse to give Jason Giambi a big hug. Darin Erstad Jersey . "Great to see you," Kipnis told Clevelands respected designated hitter. "You, too, little brother," Giambi said. Big G is back with the Indians. Almost. Sidelined since spring training by a fractured rib, Giambi has been cleared to play and is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list Monday, when the Indians open a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals. The 43-year-old recently played in several games in a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Akron, a stop that helped his swing and also brought back memories of his path to the big leagues. "Sometimes you forget the grind," Giambi said. "Its been 20 years since I was a minor leaguer." While he was with the Aeros, Giambi and teammate Michael Bourn, who was with him to rehab a strained hamstring, treated the minor leaguers to several meals and found themselves serving up advice to some of the youngsters in Clevelands system. It comes naturally to Giambi, who is still playing but may one day try his hand at managing. He was a finalist for Colorados opening before signing with the Indians before last season. "Id like to, but the universe will determine that, not me," Giambi said with a laugh at his locker. "I love the nuances of the game and being a part of that. Ive played for some of the greatest managers in the game, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre and Tito (Terry Francona) and Jim Tracy." Giambi said hes ready to play, but the Indians will wait until after the weekend. Giambi took batting practice before Fridays series opener against Toronto and looked to be himself while launching several home runs into the right-field seats. The Indians have opened 7-8 without Giambi, and Francona said his presence has been missed inside the clubhouse, dugout and on the field. "Guys know hes there," Francona said. "Shoot, I know hes there. Because G is never going to back down from anybody and that doesnt mean you have to fight or anything. But its a nice teammates to have around. He can be a settling influence. He can kick somebody in the pants. Hes a great guy to have around. "Believe me, I wouldnt say all these things if they werent true. This is how I feel." Giambi injured his rib during spring training and was placed on the DL on March 30. While he batted just .183 last season, he hit nine homers and drove in 31 runs in 186 at-bats. Giambi also provided perhaps the seasons signature moment, when he belted a pinch-hit homer in the 10th inning to beat Chicago on Sept. 24. The homer helped propel the Indians to their first playoff appearance since 2007. While some fans look only at Giambis statistics and wonder why the Indians would dedicate a roster spot to an aging, situational hitter, Francona says Giambis impact goes way beyond numbers. "G can change the game in the batters box," Francona said. "Hes not here to hit .300, that would be great. But hes here to change the game with one of his swings and he has the ability to do that." BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have placed struggling right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended left knee. Discount Nike Shoes For Sale . The move is retroactive to Tuesday and followed a bullpen session by Buchholz before Wednesday nights game against the Atlanta Braves. "We had a chance to sit down and talk to him before he went out on the field," manager John Farrell said before knowing the results of the session, "but were going to be cautious. We dont want to put him at risk of suffering any other type of injury, whether thats to the knee or shows up elsewhere. Weve got to be careful." The Red Sox recalled right-hander Alex Wilson from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Buchholzs roster spot. On Monday, Buchholz walked a career-high eight while allowing six runs in three-plus innings of an 8-6 win at Atlanta that ended Bostons 10-game losing streak. On Tuesday, Farrell said Buchholz continued pitching Monday after his left knee buckled. He said Buchholz initially denied that happened when catcher A.J. Pierzynski went to the mound. Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts. Last year he was 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 16 starts and made the AL All-Star team for the first time. In four post-season starts, he was 0-0 with a 4.35 ERA as Boston won the World Series. He had missed three months with a neck injury before coming off the disabled list on Sept. 10. Wilson pitched one inning in relief in two previous stints with Boston this season. At Pawtucket, he was 1-0 with five saves and a 1.42 ERA in 18 relief appearances. CHICAGO -- Rookie Jose Abreu connected for his second multihomer game in three days and the Chicago White Sox ended a 14-game losing streak against Cleveland, beating the Indians 7-3 Thursday night. Nike Vapormax Baratas . Abreu hit tape-measure drives in the second and fifth innings and drove in three runs. The Cuban slugger hit the first two homers of his major league career Tuesday in Colorado. Abreu has four homers and 14 RBIs in 10 games. Alexi Ramirez homered and drove in three runs for Chicago. The Indians had outscored the White Sox 102-45 in a streak that dated to last June. White Sox starter John Danks (1-0) got off to a rocky start, but settled down to allow three runs and six hits in six innings. Indians starter Danny Salazar (0-1) struck out 10 in 3 2-3 innings. He also gave up five runs and six hits, including homers by Abreu and Ramirez. Salazar fanned eight through three innings, with the only non-strikeout out coming when Adam Eaton tried to stretch a single into a double in the third inning. Salazars problem was that when the White Sox made contact, it was solid contact. Cleveland staked Salazar to a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the top of the first. Abreu homered to lead off the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half, but Asdrubal Cabrera got the run back with a homer leading off the third. The White Sox tied it 3 in the bottom of the third on a leadoff homer by Ramirez and an RBI single by Eaton. Chicago took a 5-3 lead and chased Salazar in the fourth as Ramirez drove home a pair with a double. Abreu later homered to left field off left-handed reliever Josh Outman. NOTES: With INF Lonnie Chisenhall beginning a three-day paternity leave on Thursday, the Indians called up Justin Sellers from Triple-A Columbus. "He said, Well, were being too careful with the puck, " Babcock recalled. "But he said, we got to be because youre scared to turn it over theres so much snow." Snow built up amid frigid temperatures throughout the game, which the Toronto Maple Leafs ultimately won 3-2 in a shootout to jump ahead of the Red Wings in the standings. The conditions didnt make for the prettiest fundamental game, but the spectacle of having a capacity crowd of 105,491 at this venue set such a picturesque scene that it overshadowed those shortcomings. "I dont know if you would call it a gem from a pace standpoint," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. "The weather definitely changed the way it was presented with the snow coming down, and it brought back a lot of memories from a childhood of playing outside." Even after watching Tyler Bozak score the shootout winner against his Red Wings, Babcock was beaming and talking about how glad he was to participate in an event that set the NHL attendance record and might have been enough to make the Guinness Book of World Records. It didnt even bother him that the snow slowed the puck and the players down. "I thought that was a big part of the atmosphere in todays game to make it even more special," Babcock said. "To me, today was a home run for hockey." It was -11 C when the puck dropped at 1:31 p.m., and snow fell steadily throughout the game, which featured goals from James van Riemsdyk and Bozak for Toronto and Daniel Alfredsson and Justin Abdelkader for Detroit. Coaches remarked that the snow had the biggest impact on power plays, based on how long they came after the crew was able to shovel the ice. "The NHL did a good job keeping the ice as clean as possible," said Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, whose shot was deflected in by Bozak to give Toronto the lead in the third period. "Its an experience. Its an outdoor game, in the middle of winter youre going to have snow." That was commissioner Gary Bettmans message afterward, as well. This is the first of six outdoor games in the NHL this season, and inevitably the weather makes an impact. In this case, Bettman was satisfied with how "ice guru" Dan Craig and others handled the conditions to make this game playable. "Were playing outdoors and thats what you get when you play outdoors. When you get the elements, you get the elements," Bettman said. "You could tell as the logo started getting more covered when we needed to shovel. It actually looked like synchronized swimming, so to speak. They did a great job. Listen, whatever the conditions were, it was the same for both teams." The conditions led to some sloppy play, especially a slow start as players had to feel out the conditions. The Leafs beat the Red Wings in a shootout Dec. 21 at Air Canada Centre, but this was uglier because of the snow. "You lose the puck every once in a while because you get stuck in the snow, or you cant find it," Red Wings defenceman Brendan Smith said. "The game was a lot simpler because you had to make smart decisions." Some smart deccisions came from the Leafs top line of van Riemsdyk, Bozak and Phil Kessel, which produced both goals in regulation. Nike Vapormax Comprar Online. After the game, Kessel and van Riemsdyk were named to the U.S. Olympic team, along with Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, who made 24 saves in a losing effort but bounced back from his five-goal outing Monday in Nashville. "I dont know if it was a low point for him, but Howies better than that," Babcock said. "So for him to respond today, he didnt have a lot of work, but he had some tough plays. And the way the puck was bouncing, it was hard anyways for a goaltender." It was hard on Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier, too, but he was up to the task in making 41 saves through regulation and overtime. Thats a record for an NHL outdoor game, surpassing the Calgary Flames Miikka Kiprusoffs 39 in the 2011 Heritage Classic. Bernier said the visibility was bad in the first period, and then the wind became the problem in the second when the teams changed ends. In the shootout, he figured he had an edge because players couldnt stick-handle as well. "I tried to play the odds with the ice advantage, probably, as a goalie," said Bernier, who stopped Alfredsson and Tomas Tatar in the shootout. "I tried to take away the angles and be more aggressive a little bit and hopefully they go for the deke and miss the puck." Datsyuk didnt miss, but neither did Joffrey Lupul or Bozak, and so the Leafs moved one point ahead of Detroit in the Eastern Conference wild-card and Atlantic Division standings. Babcock was so pleased with his teams effort, specifically how much they held on to the puck, that he addressed players after the loss, something he rarely, if ever, does. "The conditions made it so some of the skill in the game was eliminated, but I still thought the players competed hard," Babcock said. "It was a good game for our team. So all in all it was a good day." Given the enormity of the proceedings, it was a good day all around. But it was naturally better for the Leafs because they got the victory. "Its a tight conference for us," Bozak said. "We havent been playing our greatest lately, so it was huge two points for our team. So I think that was the main thing. We had to take it as a regular game. Obviously there were some distractions, but we needed these two points back, and were happy we got them." NOTES -- Alfredssons goal was his 34th in 82 career games against the Leafs. The previous 33, along with 38 of 39 assists versus Toronto, came when he was captain of the Ottawa Senators. Silver is also urging the NBA Board of Governors to force Sterling to sell the team. Nearly lost in the middle of the mess is that the Clippers are set to host the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal with the series even at two games apiece. The Clippers statement added that the organization will hold a press conference Tuesday night prior to their game. Other statements and tweets following the punishment issued by Silver include: "I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted shortly after the announcement. "Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life," tweeted former Lakers great Earvin "Magic" Johnson. "Former and current NBA players are very happy and satisfied with Commissioner Silvers ruling " "I commend Commissioner Adam Silver in being diligent in how he handled this important matter. He acted swiftly and appropriately with the severity of the penalty and I strongly support his decision," said Atlanta Hawks majority owner Bruce Levenson in a statement. "The Orlando Magic feel the recent reprehensible comments by Donald Sterling were absolutely unacceptable and do not reflect the values and beliefs of our organization or our league. We applaud the leadership of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, as well as head coach Doc Rivers and his players, who are at the epicenter of the situation," read a statement released by the Orlando Magic. Former NBA center and current NBA analyst Shaquille ONeal tweeted, "Way to go, Commissioner Silver! The NBA stands for everybody!" Miami Heat forward LeBron James tweeted, "Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!! Great leader!! #BiggerThanBasketball #StriveForGreatness" "Standing ovation for Commissioner Silver. Big time decision standing up for the league and its players. Now, Gotta see it through" tweeted Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry. A statement from the Toronto Raptors read, "As a proud member of the National Basketball Association, we stand strongly in our belief that the comments attributed to Mr. Sterling have no place in our society or sport. Our organization will always work to contribute to a culture of diversity and acceptance in this league and fully support the actions taken today. We thank Commissioner Adam Silver, and all of the NBA players, for their leadership on this important issue." The following statement was released by Golden State Warriors Co-Owner and CEO Joe Lacob on behalf of the entire Warriors organization: "We applaud the firm punishment handed out today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and appreciate the swiftness with which the NBA conducted its investigation. Similarly, we anticipate that the NBA Board of Governors will act promptly to put this chapter behind us. As I noted on Sunday, the sentiments expressed on the audio recording were completely inappropriate, unacceptable and senseless. We cannot tolerate such feelings or beliefs, not only in the NBA, but in society in general. There is absolutely no room for racism in our world, period." "The Timberwolves stand firmly in full support of the swift and impactful action taken today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. His leadership and direction in this matter is completely appropriate and appreciated by the Timberwolves organization. We stand unified with Commissioner Silver today and reaffirm our organizations zero tolerance approach to the type of reprehensible behavior which caused this action," read a statement from Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. Hosts of TSN Radio 1050s 1-On-1 With Will & Duane, Will Strickland and Duane Watson are joined by ATB News Founder and Editor Don Kingu as they explore the Raptors four-game slide and the Pistons six-game upswing. Can the addition of two new starters and a key reserve right whats going on in Cleveland? Strickland: Not if they dont find chemistry and the secret to playing defence in the NBA. Good chance theres no app for that. Whatever J.R. can offer in his time near Lake Erie will determine his long-term staying power there. Iman Shumpert was the real asset gain and should contribute perimeter defence and young, active legs once hes back from injury. Timofey Mozgov is a serviceable big who can make 15-18 foot jumpers, rebound and offer more resistance at the saucepan than anyone else on the roster. Coach David Blatt now has to show he has the right parts for the job of resurrecting the Cavs season. Kingu: Not completely but itll help address some of their needs, like size on the wing with Smith and Shumpert, who can also help defend the perimeter, more depth and with Varejao out, the addition of Mozgov will help them match up better with the top teams in the East. Watson: If right means get them to the top of the Eastern Conference, no. Cleveland is in panic mode and while the moves can be rationalized, this team has not come together in a way thats been expected. Just as James/Irving/Love have needed time to develop chemistry, the same will be said for the new players. However, J.R. Smith is one untied shoelace away from being JR Smith. The trades also buy head coach David Blatt some time to figure it out and cool off his hot seat some. Whats most alarming about the Raptors four-game losing streak? Strickland: Habits. They are tough to break if you, as a team, have not focused on defensive discipline and defensive integrity, one of the calling cards of this team last season and a necessity to enhance their place within the leagues elite, top tier teams. The increased offensive production has come at a cost and it may be too great to overcome as the season rolls along and the Raps defence remains offensive. Kingu: The defense has gone extinct. In this four-game losing streak, the Raptors are allowing 114ppg on almost 50 per cent FG shooting. Opponents have scored 100+ in 14 of the last 19 games and they allowed 40+ pts in a quarter twice with a whooping 49 points to the Bulls, so the defence is most alarming in my opinion! Watson: I would say the defence, but its been a glaring concern throughout the season. After establishing themselves as a top five offensive unit, the Raptors have simply been outscoring teams, meanwhile their defensive prowess has moved into the bottom third of the league. Its a team-wide issue and needs to be resolved before April or… After winning six games in a row, what got into the Detroit Pistons? Strickland: Detroit vs. everybody and simple math: addition by subtraction. No Josh Smith. No toxic environment. Better team energy, chemistry and floor spacing. Stan Van Gundys building the team in Motown he envisioned with a monster rebounding tandem down low, speedy guards whosee dribble penetration on pick and roll offers options of lobs for dunks and wide open threes for their shooters and increased effort and discipline on the defensive end of the floor. Air Max 97 Rebajas. See? Simple. Kingu: The disappearance of Josh Smith. With his departure theres more space on the court for Jennings and Monroe to operate and the offence seems to be more fluent now with Smith gone, better shots are being taken by the right players and thats why they won seven of their last eight games. Watson: Josh Smith is the easy answer, but Brandon Jennings could have easily been the player waived. Both had copious spells of poor shot selection, paid fleeting attention to defence and never stepped up as veterans on this ball club. With no one else left to blame, Jennings has embraced Stan Van Gundys philosophy along with his teammates and banded together to show why they were viewed as a team that would make the jump in the pre-season. Who is more likely to turn it around, Waiters in OKC or Smith in Cleveland? Strickland: Despite Waiters success in his first home game in OKC, consider it fools gold. Waiters is insurance for if/when Reggie Jackson decides to leave and test his fortunes as a lead guard on a bad team in the NBA hinterland. Its basically rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, with Dion Waiters and Earl Joseph Smith, Jr. Lets call it a wash. Kingu: Its really a toss up. I like both moves but if I had to choose, Ill give Smith the edge just because I feel hes a better offensive player and with the change of scenery, playing with the best player in the world in LeBron James, that can only change a players approach to the game for the better. Watson: In either situation, youre asking a big if, which is what any team wants when they make deals like this. However, Waiters needed this fresh start more, as he was never going to supplant Irving in Cleveland. The opportunity to provide offence for OKC as the beneficiary of ball movement from Westbrook and Durant gives him the edge. Does Memphis eventual acquisition of Jeff Green from the Celtics bump them to the top of the Western Conference? Strickland: No. Green is a guy who can stretch the floor and is versatile enough to handle the ball occasionally and offer additional rebounding for the Grizzlies, but hes not a game changer. In the long run, his presence will be aesthetic, if nothing else. Kingu: I think so. Since they got rid of Gay, Memphis has been coveting a SF the year they went to the Western Conference Finals. The Grizzlies started the season so well then Gay got shipped and the talk was, What if they never traded Gay? Jeff Green could fill that void on both ends of the floor. Watson: Yes. Memphis was already at the top, but the addition of Green lightens the offensive burden on Conley, Gasol and Randolph, while also opening up the floor as defenders sagged off Tayshaun Prince incessantly. He provides a long, athletic body that can rebound and will fit into the Grizzlies grindhouse system. As a complimentary player that has never excelled at being a number one or two option on a team, hes exactly what this team needs. New York, NY (SportsNetwork. Nike Vapormax Rebajas .com) - Marcus Mariota became the first Oregon player to win the Heisman Trophy. The Ducks quarterback was announced as the recipient of college footballs most prestigious individual honor during Saturdays ceremony in New York. The redshirt junior also won the Davey OBrien, Walter Camp and Maxwell Awards on Thursday night. Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon and Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper were also finalists for the Heisman Trophy, but the vote wasnt close. Mariota received 788 first-place votes and a total of 2,534 points. Gordon finished second with 37 first-place votes and 1,250 points and Cooper had 49 first-place votes, but came in third with 1,023 points. Mariota had the second-highest percentage of possible points (90.9) in Heisman history, behind only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smiths (91.6) victory for the 2006 season. The most prolific quarterback in Oregon history has led the Pac-12 champion Ducks (12-1) to 35 wins in his three seasons as the starter. He needs two more victories to cement his legacy at Oregon. The Ducks ended the season No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings and will face Florida State in the national semifinals at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The other semifinal will pit Alabama against Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day. The winners of those games will play for the national championship on Jan. 12. So far this season, Mariota has passed for 3,773 yards and 38 touchdowns with 669 yards rushing and another 14 scores. He completed 68.3 percent of his 372 passes with just two interceptions on the season and accounted for 346 yards and five touchdowns in a 51-13 win over Arizona in the Pac-12 title game. This award belongs to my teammates, Mariota said during his acceptance speech Saturday. The amount of hard work and sacrifice that each of them has made has not gone unnoticed. He has thrown for 10,115 yards and 101 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions in his college career with another 2,136 yards and 28 touchdowns rushing. Mariota was emotional at times during his Heisman speech, especially when speaking about his accomplishment as the first Hawaii native to win the award. To the Polynesian community, I hope and pray this is only the beginning, he said. Young Poly athletes everywhere, you should take this as motivation and dream big and strive for greatness. Gordon rushed for a then-FBS record 408 yards against Nebraska last month and ended the season with an FBS-leading 2,336 yards rushing, the fourth-best total all-time. Cooper, a junior, had an SEC-record 115 catches for a national-best 1,656 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games this season. He had an Iron Bowl-record 224 yards receiving in Alabamas 55-44 win over rival Auburn on Nov. 29. Mariota was the third Ducks player to be named a finalist for the Heisman following quarterback Joey Harrington, who finished fourth in the voting in 2001, and running back LaMichael James, who placed third behind Cam Newton and Andrew Luck in 2010. A quarterback has won 13 of the past 15 Heisman Trophies, with the other two going to running backs Reggie Bush for the 2005 season and Mark Ingram in 2009. (Bushs Heisman was later vacated.) TCU QB Trevone Boykin received eight first-place votes and 218 points to finish fourth behind the finalists. Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett (78) and last years Heisman Trophy winner, Jameis Winston (51) of Florida State, ended fifth and sixth. Winston got four first-place votes. Finishing 7-10 in the voting were Indiana running back Tevin Coleman, Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott, Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III and Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty. Wright was the only one of that bunch not to get a first-place vote. Nike Vapormax En Oferta . MOSCOW -- Derek Drouin wanted everyone to know his Olympic bronze medal last summer was no fluke. Cheap Old Skool Wholesale . He sent that message loud and clear Thursday at the world track and field championships, capturing another bronze in mens high jump and setting a Canadian record in the process. The native of Corunna, Ont., cleared 2.38 metres to finish behind Bohdan Bondarenko of Ukraine, who won gold with a jump of 2.41. Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar took silver in 2.38 while reigning Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov of Russia finished fourth at 2.35. "I wanted to prove this year that I deserved to be on the podium in London 2012, feels good to have accomplished that goal," Drouin said. Drouins bronze in at the London Olympics was the lone Canadian medal in track and field last summer, but he has company in Moscow. Decathlete Damian Warner (bronze) and heptahlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton (silver) have also been on the podium at the world championships. "I was joking after that I never thought I would only place third jumping 2.38 metres, Im certainly not disappointed, it was an incredible competition," said Drouin. "I felt like 2.41 metres was attainable but its always emotional when you set a personal best, getting another one in the same competition was a daunting task. That height is definitely a realistic goal for me now." Matthew Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., also broke a Canadian record, placing sixth in the 3,000-metre steeplechase in 8:11.64. Kenyas Ezekiel Kemboi won his third straight gold. "With a lap to go I knew I was on pace for (the Canadian record)," said Hughes. "I tried to stay with the Kenyan pack and fight all the way. It was a huge relief when I saw the time come up on the board." Alex Genest of Lac-aux-Sables, Que., placed 13th. In mens shot put, Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, B.C., qualified seventh with a throw of 20.39. "I have no clue what it will take to medal, thats always a moving target," said Armstrong. "Its wide open. A lot of guys are in great shape, including me." Meantime, Sweden capped an eventful day with its first gold medal after one of its high jumpers set off a controversy over Russias anti-gay law in the morning with a rainbow-colored protest that drew pole vault great Yelena Isinbayeva into condemning homosexuality. Abeba Aregawi won the closing 1,500 metres, beating defending champion Jenny Simpson of the United States with a great last-lap effort. Earlier in the day, Aregawis teammate Emma Green Tregaro flaunted her rainbow-painted fingernails in the morning as she qualified for the weekend high jump final, a show of support of gays and lesbians in Russia. It set off Isinbayeva, the Russian pole-vaulting star, who criticized homosexuality and defended the new anti-gay law which has drawn sharp criticism and led Western activists to call for a boycott of next years Winter Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi. The law means that anyone wearing a rainbow flag on the street or writing about gay relationships on Facebook, for instance, could be accused of propagandizing. "We are just against the publicity in our country and I support our government," Isinbayeva said. Green Tregaro posted a picture of her fingers on social media website Instagram, saying "Nails painted in the colours of the rainbow." She followed that with several hashtags, including "pride" and "moscow2013." "If we allow to promote and do all this stuff on the street, we are very afraid about our nation because we consider ourselves like normal, standard people," Isinbayeva said. On a night of almosts for Americans, Simpson was not the only one to settle for silver. Jehue Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago threw himself across the finish line to hold off Michael Tinsley by .01 seconds and win the 400-meter hurdles. Gordon came on strong down the stretch and finished in a world-leading time of 47.69 seconds to edge Tinsley. Emir Bekric of Serbia was third and two-time Olympic champion Felix Sanchez wound up fifth. It was a similar story in the womens 400 hurdles, even if the margins were bigger. Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic beat American duo Dalilah Muhammad and defending champion Lashinda Demus. The U.S. silver medal tally ballooned to eight, with a championship leading 14 overall. The United States also leads the gold medal standings with four. Kenya moved up into second place together with Russia when Kemboi further established himself as the greatest of his era, winning gold ahead of compatriot Conseslus Kipruto. It was the fourth straight 1-2 finish for Kenya at the world championships. Both nations now have eight medals overall, including three gold. Jamaica is only sixth at the moment but is expected to add many more to its tally when sprinting takes back precedence over the last three days of the championships. The womens 200 final is Friday and both 100 champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Olympic champion Allyson Felix dominated their semifinal heats, keeping Fraser-Pryces ambition alive for three golds -- something teammate Usain Bolt achieved at two Olympics and two world championships so far. Felix is looking for the same triple she won at the London Olympics last year, combining the 200 with the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Felix had the top time of 22.30 seconds, but Fraser-Pryce coasted well ahead of the line and still finished with the fourth best qualifying time for Fridays final. Fraser-Pryce is primarily a 100 sprinter and has two Olympics golds that attest to that, but she said in Moscow that she has never been as ready as this year to add the 200, too. -- With files from The Associated Press. The rookie made 34 saves, and Ryan Getzlaf scored his 25th goal to lead the Ducks to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. Anaheim, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped on Friday in Chicago, has won 19 of 21. The Ducks have won nine of their last 11 on the road, and they lead the NHL with 79 points. Anaheim is 20-0-2 at home. Matt Beleskey and Cam Fowler also scored for the Ducks, who have a league-best 37 points on the road. Andersen (12-2) has won three straight. Anaheim had its three-week winning run halted with a 4-2 loss on Friday. Instead of dwelling on the setback, the Ducks took control against the Blues and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first 29:13 against St. Louis. "If you lose, you just want to get back on the horse and win the next night," Andersen said. "We just stayed poised and focused." Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau was pleased with the way his club bounced back. "Its hard to win as many games in a row as we did and lose," he said. "Then youre coming back against (one) of the best percentage teams in the league. It would be pretty easy to say, Hey, we had a good run. Lets take this next one off." But they didnt. "This is a prideful group," Boudreau said. Getzlaf got the turnaround started with a goal just 5:37 in. His tally, off a pass from Corey Perry, set the early tone. "We were able to rebound and play our game," Getzlaf said. "We showed that we needed to bounce back after a tough loss." Getzlaf, who added an assist, has 14 points in the last nine games. Barret Jackman and Jaden Schwartz scored third-period goals for St. Louis, which lost back-to-back games in regulation for just the second time this season. Schwartz got the Blues to within 3-2 with a power-play goal at 14:31 of the third. Andersen took over from there with a key stop of a shot by T.J. Oshie with 2.6 seconds left. The Blues pulled their goalie with 1:08 remaining, but Andersen held onto the lead. "He was fabulous, good since Day One when he got here," Boudreau said of Anderson. "He was calm. I thought he did a real good job near the end, especially for a first-year guy." Anderson made 15 saves on 17 shots over the final 20 minutes. "We showed a lot of character and kept working for each other," Andersen said. "This shows what kind of team effort we can have." St. Louis is 1-7 against California teams this season. CHICAGO -- Gordon Beckham homered, Conor Gillaspie singled home another run and the Chicago White Sox outlasted the Cleveland Indians 2-1 despite the departure of ace Chris Sale after just three innings in a game twice delayed by rain Tuesday night. MLB Jerseys China . Beckham finished 2 for 4, adding a double in the first inning. Chicago has won eight of 12 to get back to .500 (27-27). The White Sox are 6-3 against Cleveland this season after losing 17 of 19 to their American League Central rival in 2013. Mike Aviles went 1 for 2 with a walk and drove in Clevelands run. Scott Carroll (2-3) worked three scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Ronald Belisario worked a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances. The anticipated matchup between Sale and Justin Masterson was cut short. The game began 41 minutes late because of rain and then was stopped again after the third inning. That delay lasted 1:58 and neither starter was able to continue. Sale, in his second start following a month on the disabled list with a flexor strain, seemed headed for another special outing after allowing just one hit in six scoreless innings last week against the Yankees. He was nearly perfect in his three innings, with the only blemish a one-out walk to Aviles in the third inning. The ace left-hander needed just 40 pitches record nine outs. His potential pitch count was a topic of conversation in the pregame media session when manager Robin Ventura was asked for a number. "Somewhere between 127 and where he was at last time," Ventura joked. Sale threw 127 pitches April 17 in his last start before going on the DL. He threw 86 pitches against the Yankees last week. Masterson (2-4) was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the first. The White Sox then touched him up for a run in the third inning when Gillaspie drove in Adam Eaton with a single to centre. Beckham made it 2-0 after the rain delay when he cranked solo homer leading off the fifth. Cleveland got on the board in the seventh when Aviles hit into a fielders choice to score Lonnie Chisenhall. NOTES: INF Jason Kipnis (strained right oblique) ended his rehab assignment Monday and rejoined the Indians before Tuesdays game. He could have played, but the decision was made not to activate him until Wednesday. .
