LOS ANGELES (AP) — Don Newcombe Michael Taylor Jersey , the hard-throwing Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher who was one of the first black players in the major leagues and who went on to win the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards, has died. He was 92.The team confirmed that Newcombe died Tuesday morning after a lengthy illness.“Don Newcombe’s presence and life established him as a role model for Major Leaguers across the country,” Dodgers President Stan Kasten said. “He was a constant presence at Dodger Stadium, and players always gravitated to him for his endless advice and leadership. The Dodgers meant everything to him, and we are all fortunate he was a part of our lives.”Newcombe, like Dodgers teammate Jackie Robinson, was signed by Branch Rickey from the Negro Leagues and went on to make a huge mark in the major leagues.“Newk” was a fierce presence on the mound, a 6-foot-4 and 225-pound bear of a man who stared down hitters and backed up anyone foolish enough to crowd the plate. He was a four-time All-Star and won 20 games three different times.“Don Newcombe had a ton of talent and he was a great competitor,” former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, who was a teammate of Newcombe’s, said in a statement. “He was a helluva pitcher and he was one of the best hitting pitchers I have ever seen.”His greatest year was 1956 when he went 27-7 and won both the Cy Young Award, then only given to one pitcher for both leagues, and the National League MVP award.“He was a powerhouse. I don’t think he really got enough credit for his overall performance,” said former teammate Carl Erskine. “He threw a fastball that had great location and a curveball that was a short, hard breaking pitch.”Newcombe, Robinson and catcher Roy Campanella were a trio of black stars for the Dodgers who often supported each other.“We came up with a strategy,” Newcombe later recalled. “We knew the impact we were attempting would have. We had to endure. (Robinson’s) character, his backbone, his guts — those were the keys. Jackie was the leader under Mr. Rickey.”The three talked frequently, Campanella and Newcombe from the Dodgers’ Nashua, New Hampshire, farm team and Robinson from Brooklyn.“We talked about how things were going,” Newcombe said. “What if somebody charged the mound on me? What would I do? Nobody did.“I remember in the New England league, a catcher threw dirt in Roy’s face. He said, ‘If you do that again, I’ll personally take your arm out of its socket.’ They challenged us. They did anything they could to break down the idea.”Newcombe’s Dodgers were perennial also-rans who specialized in winning the National League pennant then losing the World Series to the Yankees. Newcombe played on three pennant winners with the Dodgers and the World Series champions in 1955, the year they finally beat the Yankees.Born June 14, 1926, in Madison, New Jersey http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-shawn-kelley-jersey , Newcombe pitched in the Negro Leagues starting in 1944 at age 18. In 1945 he had an 8-3 record with the Newark Eagles and won the attention of the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. In 1989, at a reunion of Negro League greats, Newcombe gave a speech in Atlanta where he reflected on his experience.“I wish that in some few words I could wipe away that pain you’ve suffered so long because you have skin this color,” he said. “We know that we would not be here today if it were not for the Negro Leagues. I thank God I had the chance to walk shoulder to shoulder with you.”Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Newcombe was a friend and mentor who had a great impact on his life.“What he did for baseball, as being one of the first African-American players, his career with the Dodgers and how he impacted the organization,” Roberts said after spring training workouts in Glendale, Arizona. “Sharing stories about Jackie Robinson and his plight helped me and furthered my education on our history, so we lost a great man, a great Dodger today.”When asked if he shares Newcombe’s history with current players, so they understand his accomplishments and his sacrifices, Roberts said, “Absolutely, Don was around a lot for games and he would spend time with our players individually and as a team. So, for his legacy to live on, through me, through other players is paramount.”Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen was close with Newcombe and said he was at Jansen’s wedding.“He’d always talk to me about how strong I have to be. He spoke to me a lot about mental toughness and physical preparation, running, conditioning. He’d say be aggressive out there. He kept me motivated,” Jansen said in a statement on Twitter . “He taught me about the history of the game. He talked to me about being a leader. He talked to me about being a good husband and a good father.”Newcombe played in Nashua of the New England League and for teams in Montreal, Venezuela and Cuba before joining the parent club in 1949.He went 17-8 in 1949, his first season with the Dodgers and was named NL Rookie of the Year.Newcombe, Robinson and Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians became the first black players to appear in an All-Star game that season, when the Dodgers hosted the mid-season contest at Ebbets Field. On July 8, 1949, Newcombe and Hank Thompson of the New York Giants became the first black pitcher and hitter to face each other in a major league game.In 1950 Newcombe went 19-11, and in 1951 went 20-9, but he failed to win the season’s most important game. He was the starting pitcher in the decisive playoff series between the Dodgers and the Giants, and he held a 4-1 lead going into the ninth inning. But he gave up three hits to the first four batters and was replaced by Ralph Branca, who quickly achieved baseball infamy when Bobby Thomson lofted a pennant-winning home run, “the shot heard ’round the world.”Like many ballplayers of his generation Trea Turner Jersey , Newcombe lost some prime years to military service, giving the Army the 1952 and 1953 seasons. “Wait until next year” had become a virtual mantra in Brooklyn as the Dodgers won the National League title in 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953, only to lose the World Series every time. Then came 1955, “the year next year finally came” in Brooklyn parlance. The Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in the World Series and Newcombe went 20-5 during the regular season, winning 18 of his first 19 decisions. On the day of his 20th win he hit his seventh home run of the season, a National League record for a pitcher at the time. But Newcombe always struggled in the postseason. He lost the first game of the 1955 series to the Yankees and was passed over in favor of Johnny Podres after preparing to pitch in Game 7. He was 0-4 with an 8.59 ERA in career World Series appearances. In his MVP year of 1956, Newcombe became the first black pitcher to lead either league in wins. Brooklyn won another pennant that year, but lost the World Series to the Yankees in seven games, with Newcombe defeated in the final game.Newcombe faded quickly after 1956 as he pitched for the transplanted Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. He had a brief resurgence for the Reds, going 13-8 with a 3.16 ERA in 1959.In a 10-year major-league career he had a 149-90 record and a 3.56 ERA.He pitched for Spokane, Washington, in the Pacific Coast League in 1961 and finished his professional career in Japan in 1962.Alcoholism helped lead to his early retirement. He gave up drinking in later years and worked for drug and alcohol prevention programs. He continued working for the Dodgers, most recently as special adviser to the chairman. He was a frequent presence at the stadium in recent years, always nattily attired in a suit and tie with a fedora atop his head.He took part with Sandy Koufax in a first pitch ceremony before Game 7 of the 2017 World Series vs. Houston at Dodger Stadium and was at the park for last fall’s World Series vs Boston. In 2011, Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander joined Newcombe as the second man to sweep the sport’s three major awards. Newcombe introduced Verlander at the following year’s Baseball Writers Association dinner.Newcombe wasn’t elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, due mostly to his Army and alcohol-shortened career. He kept virtually no memorabilia from his career. He sold his Rookie of the Year, MVP, and Cy Young trophies, along with his World Series ring, to filmmaker Spike Lee.He pushed for greater pension rights for former Dodgers and promoted the idea of a national holiday to honor Jackie Robinson. In 1968, Newcombe met with Martin Luther King Jr. just 28 days before the civil rights leader’s assassination. King had dinner at Newcombe’s home in Los Angeles before returning to Atlanta.According to Newcombe, King told him, “Don, you’ll never know how easy you and Jackie and Doby and Campy made it for me to do my job by what you did on the baseball field.”Newcombe outlived most of his Dodger teammates and was deeply affected when Campanella and Don Drysdale died within a week of each other in 1993.“When tragic things happen, it gets the guts out of you,” he said at the time. “You try to be strong, but when those things happen, you break down and cry like a baby.”Newcombe is survived by his wife http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-matt-wieters-jersey , Karen Newcombe, son Don Newcombe Jr., daughter Kellye Roxanne Newcombe, son Brett Anthony Newcombe, grandchildren Cayman Newcombe and Riann Newcombe and stepson Chris Peterson. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy was out of options after emptying his bench of position players three innings earlier and with the potential winning run at third base in the 12th inning. Then, he turned to his best hitting pitcher. It worked perfectly.Madison Bumgarner had the first game-ending hit of his career, a pinch-hit single that drove in Gorkys Hernandez, and lifted the Giants to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. The Giants recorded their 10th walk-off win of the season, and won for just the fifth time in 22 games.“It’s tough this time of year to come and compete and play as hard as you ordinarily would but this is the time you have to look yourself in the mirror and go out there and do your job, earn your paycheck,” Bumgarner said “As soon as we ran out of guys, I got my cleats and my jersey on.”San Francisco blew a 4-3 lead in the ninth when Wil Myers doubled and scored off Tony Watson. But the Giants rallied in the 12th after going hitless the previous four innings. After Hernandez tripled off Rowan Wick (0-1), Bochy called for Bumgarner.Bumgarner took a called strike and then lined a sharp single past third baseman Myers to drive in the winning run. It was Bumgarner’s fourth career pinch-hit and first since July 31, 2016. He has six hits and three RBIs in 41 at-bats for a .146 average. He has a career batting average of .182.“He smoked it, didn’t he?” Bochy said.Mark Melancon (1-3) retired six batters to earn win.Hunter Pence homered and scored three times in what was likely one of his final games with San Francisco. Gregor Blanco had a two-run single and Evan Longoria added an RBI double.Freddy Galvis had four hits and a walk, continuing his offensive surge for San Diego. Eric Hosmer added a two-run single. At 63-95, the Padres are assured of their worst record since 2008, when they finished 63-99.San Diego stranded a runner at third in the 11th and at first and third in the 12th. The Padres also matched their season high of three errors, two by shortstop Javy Guerra.“It’s a tough one for us,” San Diego manager Andy Green said. “We gave away some runs on the defensive side and it’s tough. We’ve played relatively clean defense for a while and we didn’t really do that today.”Pence, who reached on an error and scored in the first, homered off Robbie Erlin in the fourth and received a standing ovation from the announced crowd of 36,063.The 35-year-old outfielder also singled and scored the go-ahead run on Gregor Blanco’s double off Robert Stock (1-2) in the seventh. Blanco had been 5-for-32 with runners in scoring position.Recognized as one of the driving forces behind the Giants’ World Series titles in 2012 and 2014, Pence is scheduled to become a free agent in the offseason.TRAINER’S ROOMGiants: Panik didn’t start but entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Catcher Nick Hundley was hit in the back of the head on a follow-through swing by Austin Hedges in the 12th inning, but remained in the game.UP NEXTSan Diego RHP Luis Perdomo (1-6, 7.56) makes his first start since July 27 in the series finale Wednesday as part of manager Andy Green’s plan to bullpen the game. WASHINGTON (AP) — Boston Bruins players could feel themselves making progress in recent games against the Washington Capitals even as the losses piled up.All it took was finishing one play Tage Thompson Jersey Womens , a commitment to team defense and a handful of timely saves by Tuukka Rask for the Bruins to end their 14-game skid against the defending Stanley Cup champions with a 1-0 victory Sunday. Boston beat Washington for the first time since March 29, 2014, and its 14 consecutive victories against Arizona are now the longest active winning streak against one opponent in the NHL.“We’ve had some tight games,” said Rask, who made 24 saves for just his second career victory in 19 appearances against Washington. “It’s one of those things that just happens in sports where you get into these streaks of either winning or losing and at some point they’re going to snap.”Thanks to David Krejci’s goal, the Bruins snapped their three-game skid and handed the Capitals their eighth loss in nine games.Outscored 45-21 during their 14-game run of futility, the Bruins dominated the Capitals in almost all facets of the game and would have blown them out if not for the play of goaltender Braden Holtby, who made 37 saves. Holtby was helpless to stop Krejci’s shot on a one-timer after a tic-tac-toe puck movement and a cross-ice pass from Torey Krug midway through the second.Rask earned “TUUK!” chants rom Bruins fans in attendance, no louder than when he flashed the glove to snare a shot from Travis Boyd in the slot in the third period. The Finnish goalie picked up his 253rd career victory to take over first place on the Bruins’ all-time list.“He was in control all night Dalton Prout Jersey Womens ,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We were pretty clean in front of him there till the end, and when we weren’t, he was there for us. Happy for him, I think the guys in the room are as well and hopefully he keeps building on it.”Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo didn’t believe there was necessarily a theme or specific problem that led to such a lopsided stretch against Washington and thought his team was getting closer to breaking through. Afterward, captain Zdeno Chara said the Bruins “finally” got the win against Washington. In many ways, the Capitals had themselves to blame.Fed up by mental mistakes, Capitals coach Todd Reirden used ice time as a weapon to punish players. He benched Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitrij Jaskin for much of the first period after each took a penalty and Andre Burakovsky for the first few minutes of the second for a defensive-zone turnover that almost led to a goal.Washington leads the league with 191 minor penalties.“I think as you get past the All-Star break and you start making a push toward the playoffs, that’s an area we have to get better in, as we’ve taken far too many minor penalties with our sticks Elias Lindholm Jersey Womens ,” Reirden said. “We have to be more disciplined if we’re going to have success moving forward from here, and I thought the last 30 games is a good time to implement that.”Alex Ovechkin returned to the lineup after being forced to sit out Friday against Calgary for skipping All-Star Weekend. Ovechkin powered around Chara for a scoring chance in the first period but couldn’t crack Rask. He will need to wait at least one more game to pass Sergei Fedorov for the most points by a Russian player.“I’m so happy he didn’t get it on me,” Rask said. “I didn’t know that. That would’ve been in my head if I knew that. That’s good. I’m not facing them again, so that’s good.”NOTES: Capitals C Lars Eller was out with a lower-body injury that caused him to leave Friday’s game against Calgary. … D Christian Djoos began a two-game conditioning assignment with Hershey of the American Hockey League. … Boston improved to 14-4-2 on Super Bowl Sunday, third in the NHL in such victories behind Montreal and Washington. … Bruins center Patrice Bergeron played his 999th regular-season game.UP NEXTBruins: Host former Capitals coach Barry Trotz and the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Islanders on Tuesday.Capitals: Host Calder Trophy front-runner Elias Pettersson and the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. The Vegas Golden Knights were not only the top story in the NHL last season. They were a top story across the entire sports landscape, and arguably the history of all sports. Now, the expansion team from a year ago has the main objective of avoiding a hangover from their magical season, which extended all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Washington Capitals.Article continues below ...Their second season starts Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights go into the season full of expectations, and they must do so after settling on new talent because of free agency and trades.“It’s not like the situation we had last year Alan Quine Jersey Womens ,” Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said. “It’s a whole different scenario.”Veteran goaltender Marc Andre-Fleury, whose efficiency sparked the Golden Knights last season, added, “I think there’s more expectations from the players, the staff and the fans.“I think everybody expects us to do as well. At the same time, though, if you want to have success, we can’t be thinking about all that stuff (from last season). You’ve just got to be worrying about playing your game the way you can and success will come.”Can Vegas continue its production from last season? Twelve returning players set NHL highs for points in 2017-18, including the top line of William Karlsson (78) Petr Mrazek Jersey Womens , Jonathan Marchessault (75) and Reilly Smith (60). Second-line forward Erik Haula (55) and defensemen Colin Miller (41), Nate Schmidt (36), Shea Theodore (29) and Deryk Engelland (23) are also included on that list.Fleury’s 2.24 goals-against average and .927 save percentage were the best of his 14 NHL seasons. The second line has new faces with the Golden Knights signing center Paul Stastny and acquiring right wing Max Pacioretty in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens during the offseason. They replace forwards David Perron and James Neal, who left in free agency.Perron led Vegas in assists last season with 50 and Neal scored 25 goals. The Flyers, who lost in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs to Pittsburgh, were one of the youngest teams in the league last season, but that youthful talent was significant to their success.Travis Konecny, 21, is one of the team’s top players and will join captain Claude Giroux and Selke finalist Sean Couturier on the first line. Nolan Patrick is part of a formidable line that includes Wayne Simmonds and Jacob Voracek. One of the main objectives for Flyers coach Dave Hakstol is deciding on the vacant third-line center role that was occupied last season by Valtteri Filppula Jordan Schroeder Jersey Womens , who signed with the New York Islanders.Jordan Weal and Scott Laughton are top candidates. Weal is playing at his original position after skating on a wing in recent years. Laughton may open against the Golden Knights on left wing if he does not play in the middle.“I think playing in the league a couple years now, I kind of have more confidence with the puck,” Laughton said. “I work with an elite skills coach back home and try to work on the little things that I wouldn’t work on — a lot of stuff with your head up. “Goaltending remains a major concern for the Flyers. The tandem of oft-injured Michal Neuvirth and Brian Elliott was ranked in the bottom 10 of the NHL last year in save percentage. Elliott posted a .909 save percentage in the last two seasons, and Neuvirth has been at .912 when healthy.

Hop in an Uber for a Philly food tour and load up on Gritty cupcakes , Gritty mac ‘n cheese fries , Gritty Italian ice and, of course, the Gritty cheesesteak (steak, whiz wit, French fries and Cheetos).Gritty’s been loved and lampooned, swept into politics and become more than just an orange face that turned into a No. 1-trending hashtag. There’s little need to play 82 games this season to find the NHL rookie of the year: it’s Gritty.Even the commish admits he’s a Gritty Guy.“If he’s supposed to bring attention to the game , I think he’s done a pretty good job of doing that,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.Gritty’s been in your face (and invaded your dreams ) since his debut last week.Gritty got off to a slow start when the Flyers unveiled him with a stock photo of a menacing mascot that made him look like more like the cold-blooded Pennywise than a lovable monster that a kid would want to hug.Gritty can’t be blamed for looking more threatening than the Flyers’ Stanley Cup chances once he stumbled out of captivity. The Flyers say Gritty was found by the team in his secret hideout during offseason renovations at the Wells Fargo Center. His father was a “bully,” and his unkempt beard suggests he may have arisen from the ashes of the Flyers’ long-ago home, the Spectrum. And those crossed-eyes? Well, yours would be too if you spent all that time trapped trying to find Patrick Kane’s Game 6 goal.Mascot mythology is fun.But the truth is, the Flyers had missed out on the in-game frivolity Chris Wideman Jersey , the merchandise revenue streams and the community outreach programs that result from a marketable mascot. At the 2016 NHL All-Star game in Nashville, Tennessee, the Flyers’ marketing department saw the rest of the league’s mascots — like Bailey the Lion , S.J. Sharkie and Stormy — competing in various games and realized it was time to make a mascot from myth to reality. The Flyers had tried a mascot before, but Slapshot lasted just one season in 1976.“Our players, the Flyers’ wives, the alumni, you can only ask them to do so much,” said Joe Heller, Flyers’ vice president of marketing. “We felt that there is so much more we could do by creating a mascot program.”Some mascots are obvious: The Panthers mascot is, well, a panther. The New Jersey Devils? Yup, a Devil. The Arizona Coyotes mascot is … wait for it … a coyote! The Flyers were stumped.“It didn’t seem like any animal or person would fit what a Flyer would be,” Heller said. The Flyers didn’t have to search far for inspiration: the mascot gold standard — make that, the green, potbellied, red-tongue and big-beaked, ATV wheeling mascot standard — was launching hot dogs and dancing on dugouts across the street. The Flyers leaned on advice from character branding consultant Dave Raymond Womens Craig Anderson Jersey , better known as the founding father of the Phillie Phanatic for the baseball team. Raymond played the Phanatic for 15 years and has helped franchises decide everything from character development to choosing the person inside that XXXXXXL jersey.Raymond said the best mascots are as synonymous with their teams as their Hall of Fame players, such as the Phanatic, Brutus Buckeye or the Suns gorilla.“I really believe Gritty is on a path to becoming that,” Raymond said. The Flyers considered over 100 options before they settled on a sketch from freelance designer Brian Allen of Flyland Designs.“I began the project by sketching over 20 different possible mascots, including, bats, bulls, groundhogs, dragons, tough guys, yetis, and even a flying squirrel,” Allen wrote on his website. “Once the client saw the sketches, they picked a big dumpy monster I had drawn as the starting point.”Character Translations, in suburban Philly, created the outfit that includes 33 1/2 size skates and a size 58 jersey. The name was decided over the summer by team president Paul Holmgren.“(He) chimed in, ‘How great would it be if we named our mascot Gritty?” Heller said.Just like that, a social media star was hatched.“He’s getting a ton of attention Authentic Erik Karlsson Jersey Kids , and I suppose that’s what mascots are supposed to do,” Bettman said. “Looking at social media, he has admirers and he has doubters, but it looks like the greater Philadelphia community and in particular the Philadelphia hockey community has embraced him.”Yes, a GoFundMe page was set up to euthanize Gritty. And comedian Jon Oliver said Gritty “looks like the end result of the orange McDonald’s Fry Guy hooking up with Grimace.”But Philadelphia’s new director of fun won over the city in his debut when he bit it on skates and fell on his fuzzy rear at a preseason game. Gritty’s been carved on pumpkins, made beer menus and palled around with Flyers stars Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds . He made it into HQ Trivia and has nearly 120,000 Twitter followers in just 10 days.“I don’t think we have our arms around everything that’s out there,” Heller said.Gritty’s going to throw his around everyone he can — and wins fans over one furry hug at a time. MONTREAL (AP) — Carey Price shared his key for success.“Rest is a weapon,” the Montreal goalie said.Price made 33 saves in his return from injury to help the Canadiens beat the Vancouver Canucks 2-0 on Thursday night.Price picked up his second shutout of the season and 42nd overall in his first appearance after missing three games because of a lower-body injury. Jordie Benn and Jonathan Drouin scored for Montreal.“Those glove saves, they make me giggle on the bench that’s for sure,” Benn said. “He was solid.”Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson left because of a lower-body injury in the second period. Named to the All-Star Games on Wednesday, Pettersson was injured after getting tangled with fellow rookie and Habs forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Pettersson’s right knee was caught between Kotkaniemi’s legs as they both fell to the ice. The Swede stayed down on the ice before getting to his feet and going to the dressing room.I’ve watched it a lot of times,” Vancouver coach Travis Green said. “It’s not a dirty play by their player at all. (Pettersson) gets hooked a little bit. Petey pushes back on him and leans back. Probably tries to give him a bit of a reverse hit and two young guys fall to the ice. It’s not a penalty.”Joel Armia also returned to the Canadiens after missing 25 games because of a knee injury. The Finn had an assist.Benn opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at 11:50 of the first. Minutes after Pettersson’s injury, Drouin burst up the wing for his 13th of the season.Vancouver’s Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves.“(Price) had a real good game tonight,” Markstrom said. “They took advantage of their scoring chances they got and got two past me. A lucky bounce helped him get another winner for the Bruins on Sunday.Marchand scored 4:03 into the extra period after his shot deflected off an opponent’s skate http://www.officialstarsproonline.com/authentic-adidas-brett-ritchie-jersey , extending Boston’s points streak to seven games with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.Patrice Bergeron left the puck at the top of the right circle for Marchand, who skated into the slot and inadvertently used Matt Calvert’s skate to get the puck past goalie Semyon Varlamov.Marchand extended his franchise record with his 14th career overtime goal.“We got a lucky bounce, and we’ll take it,” Marchand said.John Moore also scored and Jaroslav Halak made 35 saves for the Bruins, who improved to 4-0-3 in their last seven.Boston (31-17-8) moved one point ahead of rival Montreal for third place in the Atlantic Division and trails second-place Toronto by a point.“It was a needed point for us,” said Halak, who snapped a personal five-game skid. “The standing in our division Adam Clendening Jersey Womens , it’s tight, and it’s going to be a race until the end so we need to keep getting points right now.”Nathan MacKinnon scored his 29th goal for Colorado, tying Gabriel Landeskog for the team lead. Varlamov had 33 saves as the Avs lost their seventh in a row (0-3-3) but earned a point with a third straight overtime loss.“Tonight’s just a wrist shot that happens to hit our guy’s foot and changes direction,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said.Colorado (22-22-11) fell 4-3 in OT at Washington on Thursday before losing by the same score Saturday against the Islanders in New York.“This is kind of the luck we’ve been having with it,” Bednar said. “We’re working on it, we’re watching video on it, guys are paying attention to what we’re saying and defending hard 3-on-3.”Bednar called his team’s three-game points streak “a huge step forward Devin Shore Jersey ,” but the sentiment differed inside the Avs’ locker room.“It’s just not good enough,” Varlamov said. “We’ve got to find a way to win in overtime.”The Avalanche sit four points out of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.MacKinnon gained control of the puck in the corner before charging the net and beating Halak high on the glove side for the game’s first goal with 32.1 seconds left in the first.Boston tied it on Moore’s goal nearly four minutes into the second. The veteran defenseman’s wrist shot from atop the left circle found its way past a screened Varlamov for his third goal of the season.MacKinnon’s perfectly-timed exit from the penalty box during a Bruins power play midway through the period resulted in a breakaway, but he hesitated and jammed the puck against Halak’s blocker.Moore nearly scored another when he dumped the puck into the Avs’ zone, only to have it take a wild bounce off the glass and zip past an unsuspecting Varlamov with 24.1 seconds left in the second. There’s lots of hockey left to be played and hopefully we can work our way out and things will start bouncing a little bit more, but it’s tough right now.”The Senators got off to a much better start than they had in their previous few games. They were outshooting the Wild 12-2 midway through the first and might have had a few early goals if not for Dubnyk’s performance.Ottawa got on the board in the final minute of the first. NEW YORK (AP) There is usually another guest at the table when Gary Bettman and his wife John Moore Jersey Womens , Shelli, go out to dinner with other couples during the NHL playoffs.Friends come to accept the glow of the TV screen set up so Bettman can keep an eye on games, ready to go from enjoying a nice meal to running a multibillion-dollar business and back again. The commissioner of a storied league with 24 teams in the United States and seven in Canada doesn’t put work on hold for life or vice versa. When his 11-year-old grandson, Matthew, wanted to hang out with him in Tampa during All-Star weekend, he brought him along for meetings.”They all blend together because I’m never off,” Bettman said. ”It’s all part of what I do and who I am.”For 25 years, Bettman has overseen the growth of the NHL from $437 million in annual revenue to nearly $5 billion, guiding the league into and out of work stoppages and expanding hockey’s reach to places that never seemed a fit for the fastest game on ice.The Stanley Cup Final opens Monday in Las Vegas, where Bettman had a guiding hand in the expansion process that yielded the Golden Knights and led to the most successful inaugural season in league history. When he was there in November 2016 for the unveiling of the team name, Bettman was booed by the crowd and could not have cared less.”No, no, keep the booing,” he told the crowd. ”That proves you’re now an NHL city.”Once perhaps an unlikely leader for a game with its roots north of the border, the 65-year-old lawyer from Queens who got his start in the NBA has become one of the most powerful and long-lasting influences in professional sports. More than two decades into the job, Bettman still feels energized by the thrill of work – and the sugar supplied by dark chocolate Milky Way candy bars doesn’t hurt.He isn’t going anywhere, either.”I think he’s the best that we could do,” said Jeremy Jacobs, the Boston Bruins owner and board of governors chairman. ”I mean, there are things that might irritate you from time to time about him. But you know where his heart and soul is, he’s always interested in the game Chris Wagner Jersey Womens , the improvement of the game.”It hasn’t always been pretty. Bettman has had a role in three lockouts, the relocation of five franchises, has repeatedly denied any link between head injuries and the degenerative brain disease CTE, and recently refused to allow NHL players to go to the Olympics after doing so five times. Confident in his decisions and willing to accept the ramifications to his reputation and legacy, Bettman has earned respect – sometimes begrudged – and made some enemies while serving longer than the other three major sports commissioners combined.”He’s a force, so he’s not going to roll over because somebody thinks it’s a good idea,” said John Collins, a former NHL chief operating officer. ”He’s very principled and he sticks up for his principles. And those principles could be business principles or they could be just kind of moral principles and he’ll fight for that. That’s the way he lives his life, and that’s the way he runs the league.”Part of Bettman’s work involves keeping 31 ownership groups and markets on the same page. Former Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President and CEO Richard Peddie said Bettman bringing almost every owner into the league has its benefits.”They’re all there because Gary ultimately blessed them, so I think they always have some kind of IOUs,” Peddie said. ”I don’t mean that in a disingenuous or unfair way. But he was the gatekeeper, so he has that going for him.”Bettman, who was NBA general counsel under then-Commissioner David Stern and a senior vice president before starting at the NHL on Feb. 1, 1993, orchestrates things in such a way that there’s rarely public dissent. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has watched how Bettman builds a united front among owners.”He’ll pre-brief and sell some of the key owners, if you will, and he backchannels and he’ll literally call and brief every owner personally on a subject so that when you come to the meeting, you’re briefed, you’ve asked your questions,” Leonsis said. ”Because he puts in the work and he has the data and his competence is not questioned in any way and he does have the data, he’s able to land the planes Alex Galchenyuk Jersey Womens , if you will, with efficiency.”Bettman acknowledges some events during his tenure were not of his making. To this day, he insists moving the Quebec Nordiques to Colorado and the original Winnipeg Jets to Arizona had to be done, and that the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out an entire season was necessary to ensure the long-term health of the league.”There are things I wish might not have happened,” Bettman said. ”Work stoppages are a good example. The fact is I knew what we needed, and we had to get it. And if it took a long time to ultimately convince the Players’ Association that this was in everybody’s best interest, I wish it could’ve happened sooner, but it didn’t.”There are some in hockey who can’t forgive Bettman for the lockouts, most recently one in 2012-13. There are others like Peddie who’d rather consider them part of an entire body of work that includes overseeing expansion into the Sun Belt.”It’s putting hockey where it hasn’t traditionally been,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. ”That’s proven successful. … I think his legacy of having franchises there and putting hockey in nontraditional markets and making it relevant in nontraditional markets kind of exceeds the business success of the teams.”The deaths of enforcers Derek Boogaard and Bob Probert brought CTE and hockey to the forefront, and the NHL is currently facing a federal lawsuit from more than 100 former players who allege it had the resources to better prevent head trauma, failed to properly warn players of such risks and promoted violent play. In a July 31, 2015, deposition, Bettman said: ”There’s no medical or scientific certainty that concussions lead to CTE.”Bettman said the NHL was a leader on concussion studies, testing and solutions as far back as the 1990s. He also said he believes the lawsuit has no merit.”People can embrace that position, understand it, dismiss it – that’ll be individual opinions,” he said. ”But I have to do what I have to do on behalf of the game, and it starts with player safety being a priority.”Bettman is paid more than $9 million annually and with that is willing to take the brunt of responsibility for the NHL’s good, bad and ugly. He doesn’t have too many fans at the Players’ Association Carter Rowney Jersey Womens , but owners line up behind him based on his work in raising franchise values, negotiating U.S. and Canadian TV deals and steering the sport through trouble.”I think the league is lucky to have had him as long as they’ve had,” said Collins, who worked under Bettman for nine years. ”That role for any sport is a really tough one and it’s really tough when you’re in it for a long time because it’s inevitable that you collect a lot of dents.”The dents don’t keep Bettman up at night, but he works so much that he’ll sleep at most 6 hours on the weekend and often much less. When he returned home at 2 a.m. from a playoff game this spring, he walked 13-year-old golden doodle Lola and 4-year-old Teddy before bed, slept under three hours and postponed working out with a trainer to leave the house at 6:15 for an 8 a.m. television appearance.”I don’t get a lot of sleep and I don’t need a lot of sleep,” Bettman said in his office overlooking Sixth Avenue that has a table-top hockey game, books of the sport’s history and plenty of family photos. ”There are probably certain days where people in my family will think I have narcolepsy, because if I sit down I might fall asleep for five or 10 minutes. But what I do is energizing, so that keeps me going. And I eat a lot of candy.”Bettman and Daly spent two hours earlier this week poring over a draft of the 2018-19 schedule while having Chinese food for lunch – a less glamorous part of the job than handing out the Stanley Cup each June but part of the gig.So is planning for the future, even though Bettman is under contract through 2022 and shows no signs of slowing down. Daly, who’s 54, thinks Bettman will work long enough that owners should look to someone younger as the next commissioner, but his boss is more than comfortable handing him the reins if anything went wrong.”What if God forbid I get hit by a bus?” Bettman said. ”Well, I’ve built an organization that, if need be, I’d hope they’d miss me somewhat, but if need be could carry on.”— WINNIPEG, Manitoba — If there was a trophy for most assists in a season, Blake Wheeler would be one of the early favorites to hoist it at the end of the season. The Winnipeg Jets captain had a five-point night in a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday at Bell MTS Place Luke Schenn Jersey Womens , setting up the first four goals and scoring the last into an empty net. That performance gave Wheeler 18 assists in 15 games, the second-highest assist total in the league behind Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen, who had 19. Wheeler led the NHL in assists last season with 68 and has more than any other player since the start of the 2015-16 season.Article continues below ...Wheeler hopes to continue his leading ways when the Jets host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night. The Devils come to town on the heels of a 6-1 shellacking from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday and have lost five of their last six, being outscored 29-15 in the process. Winnipeg is the last stop on a season-high seven-game road trip.At the same time as Wheeler is catching fire, sniper Patrik Laine appears to have regained his scoring touch for the Jets. He notched his fifth goal in three games on Friday to take the team lead with eight. He has just three goals in his first 12 games.Defenseman Josh Morrissey, who had one assist against Colorado, had an idea Wheeler was ready for a big night after sharing a ride to the rink with him. “You could tell he was ready to go. He’s a big guy that has so much skill and competes so hard,” he said. “Blake took it to another level. He’s a guy that drives our bus every single day in practice, in the gym and basically in every aspect of being a professional hockey player. He’s the guy that we follow.”The Devils will need better goaltending if they want to compete with the Jets. Goalie Keith Kincaid stopped a number of excellent scoring opportunities by the Leafs but gave up one floater to Morgan Rielly while being screened by three of his teammates. In the previous game, a 7-3 loss against the Ottawa Senators, veteran Corey Schneider was pulled after giving up four goals on 22 shots.“We’ll be fine in the end,” Kincaid said. “This will just make us stronger. We have to build as a team. It’s not going to be easy. Everybody has to be together and work hard.”Coach John Hynes was particularly frustrated with his team’s breakout against the Leafs.“We have to play better. On four out of the six goals, we had the puck on our tape coming out of the zone, so our puck execution needs to be better. We’ll have to do that better against Winnipeg,” he said. The Rocket Richard Trophy, named in honor of the Montreal Canadiens legend who led the league in goal scoring five times in the 1940s and 1950s, has been awarded since 1999 to the league’s top goal scorer. The player with the most total points is given the Art Ross Trophy, named in honor of a former player and executive. A trophy to the top playmaker could be named after Wayne Gretzky, who retired in 1999 with 1,963 assists. He has more assists than any other player has total points.
SAN JOSE Authentic Brandin Cooks Jersey , Calif. (AP) — Brent Burns delivered a clutch goal on a night he reached a milestone that is a testament to his durability.Burns scored midway through the third period of his 1,000th career game and led the San Jose Sharks to a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.“It’s just nice to score a goal again, it had been so long. It’s nice to contribute — I feel good about that,” Burns said.Burns scored his fifth goal at 10:21 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and the Sharks snapped a three-game losing streak. The 33-year-old Burns was playing in his 428th consecutive regular-season game. The 2017 Norris Trophy winner as the league’s top defenseman hasn’t missed a game since November 2013.“What a great career,” Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. “For a guy who was drafted as a forward and changed positions and got traded and wins the Norris Trophy as a defenseman. Just the way he approaches the game and what he brings to the rink every day. It’s a great accomplishment for him from where he’s come from, but it looks like he’s got a lot more games left in him.”Burns’ goal was controversial, with the Ducks asserting that the play should have been called dead when the puck went into the netting moments earlier.Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said he couldn’t challenge what he considered a blown call.“That’s what you chalk it up to,” Carlyle said. “You can plainly see there’s five players on our hockey club stopped playing, but that happens.”Marcus Sorensen, Melker Karlsson and Tomas Hertl also scored for San Jose. Barclay Goodrow had two assists and Martin Jones had 26 saves.Jakob Silfverberg and Kiefer Sherwood scored for Anaheim http://www.losangelesramsteamonline.com/jared-goff-jersey , which lost its fourth straight game after winning four in a row and nine of 10.The Ducks trailed 2-1 when Sherwood scored his fifth goal at 3:53 of the third period.Anaheim scored first, getting a power-play goal by Silfverberg — his 10th — midway through the first period.Karlsson tied it for San Jose with his fourth goal with just under two minutes left in the first period.Sorensen scored his seventh goal at 5:44 of the second period to give San Jose a 2-1 lead.Hertl added an empty netter for San Jose with 23 seconds left. It was his 13th goal and 200th career point.Ducks goalie Chad Johnson came in for starter John Gibson at the start of the second period, who left the game with an upper-body injury. Johnson gave up two goals and turned back 22 shots. Gibson gave up one goal and had 16 saves.Carlyle said Gibson’s injury status wasn’t immediately known.“I always warm up and prepare at the start of the games,” Johnson said. “You never know in this league what’s going to happen. I was as prepared as I could be for that situation, but you’re never fully into it compared to when you know you’re going to start and your mindset the whole day is different, but it’s part of my job and I’m confident with my ability. TAMPA, Fla. — After being the final team in the league to start the season, the Tampa Bay Lightning finally get the chance to be back on the ice Thursday when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday at Amalie Arena.Tampa Bay has been off since opening the season with a shootout victory against the Florida Panthers on Saturday. Vancouver http://www.losangelesramsteamonline.com/brandin-cooks-jersey , meanwhile, already has three games under its belt following Tuesday’s loss at Carolina. The Lightning, a Stanley Cup favorite this season, looked anything like a top contender despite the victory on opening night after allowing 43 shots on goal to the Panthers. With the extended time off between games, Tampa Bay went back to a training camp mindset looking to have a stronger showing in the second game.Article continues below ...“We need to raise our compete level, we didn’t execute plays like we usually do,” Lightning forward Yanni Gourde said. “We turned too many pucks over and that was part of why we played like we did in the first period. We know we need to work on that and we were out on the ice (for practice) and working hard it it, so that’s good for us.”Despite the victory on opening night, the Lightning are aware their level of play needs to rise quickly to live up to the expectations they have for themselves, let alone the outside expectations. They should get a boost with the return of Tyler Johnson, who missed the final two weeks of preseason plus the season opener due to an upper-body injury.Johnson has been practicing all week with the team and expects to be in the lineup when Tampa Bay returns to action. That has forced head coach Jon Cooper to move some personnel around when it comes to line combinations.“There’s parts of our game we liked from last game and some we didn’t http://www.losangelesramsteamonline.com/robert-woods-jersey ,” Cooper said. “We are trying to find the best mix possible so we can score more than one shorthanded goal in a game. This is what we’re doing now. We’re just trying to find the chemistry a little bit.”The Canucks don’t have similar expectations in the first year of the post-Sedin era. Vancouver is in the midst of a rebuild with the likes of Bo Horvat, Brock Boesner and Calder Trophy candidate Elias Pettersson. But, starting the season with one victory in three games leaves a bit of an empty feeling despite the optimism with some of the youth injected in to the lineup.“Losing sucks,” Horvat told the Vancouver Province. “No matter how many goals you score, if you lose at the end of the day, it’s still a loss. For us, that’s our main focus: We want to win hockey games. That’s the main goal.”Canucks head coach Travis Green has been moving the lines around to try to find the right mix of offense — which has not been a problem in the early going — and defense, which has been a bit of an issue, allowing 14 goals in the opening three games.

Moments later he dealt forward Carl Hagelin to the Los Angeles Kings for forward Tanner Pearson. All of it unfolded as Penguins captain Sidney Crosby skipped practice while being evaluated for an upper-body injury. Just another busy day for the 69-year-old Rutherford. The only general manager to win Stanley Cups with multiple teams in the expansion era remains fervently committed to his job Scott Laughton Jersey , which is why he didn’t hesitate to make a trade that sent the speedy but slumping Hagelin to the Kings for the younger Pearson, the first of what could be several moves as Pittsburgh tries to shake itself out of a 7-6-3 start.“Despite the fact it hasn’t been a happy couple of weeks with the Penguins as a whole, I’m very happy to be staying and will do my best to fix it,” Rutherford said. The Penguins hired Rutherford in the summer of 2014 to replace Ray Shero. Under his guidance, the Penguins revamped their roster and their coaching staff, surrounding Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with a talented group that helped Pittsburgh become the first franchise in nearly 20 years to win consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.Hagelin scored the empty-net goal that clinched the 2017 Cup, racing down the ice in the final seconds of Game 6 to set off a giddy celebration on the bench. Yet Hagelin’s production dipped last year. He finished with just 10 goals — the fewest in his career in a season in which he played at least 65 games — and had just one goal this year before the trade was announced.“I feel bad,” Rutherford said. “Carl Hagelin is a very popular guy and I like him a lot personally … at the same time we’re not tracking toward winning a Stanley Cup right now and changes are necessary.”Hagelin is in the final season of a contract that pays him $4 million annually. Pearson, 26 Womens Sean Couturier Jersey , has two more seasons left on his deal that is worth around $3.75 million per year. Pearson has averaged 40 points in each of the past three seasons, but had just one point — an assist — in 17 games with the Kings this season. He could be available as early as Thursday night when the Penguins host Tampa Bay.“He’s shown an ability to produce offensively … he’s a decent skater … he’s got a good 200-foot game,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’ll see where we slot him here over the next little while.”The Penguins could certainly use a boost. They have dropped five of six, the longest extended slide of Rutherford’s largely successful four-plus year tenure. The man nicknamed “Trader Jim” for his aggressive approach to addressing problems insists he still has plenty of juice left to keep going even as his 70th birthday approaches in February. It’s a far cry from the day he was hired when he said he anticipated working a few more seasons.“I said at the time I’d probably be around a couple years,” Rutherford said. “I guess I went a couple years at a time. Two times two and we’re still counting. You never know.”For now his attention is focused on helping the star-laden Penguins emerge from another early malaise.Crosby played more than 21 minutes and didn’t miss a shift during Tuesday night’s 4-2 loss to New Jersey. His absence at practice on Wednesday was a surprise, though Sullivan offered few details. It doesn’t appear to be a long-term problem, however, though Pittsburgh’s issues are far larger than just health. They are having trouble preventing goals and the offense for once isn’t picking up the slack.“I just think we’re in a funk now, we’re a fragile team Shayne Gostisbehere Jersey ,” Rutherford said. “We’re struggling but for the most part I still believe in this team. … Everybody wants to win a championship and I believe we still can.” DALLAS (AP) — Ben Bishop got help from backup Anton Khudobin, and together they made franchise history.Bishop and Khudobin teamed up for the first combined shutout for the Dallas Stars in a 2-0 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.Jamie Benn and Radek Faksa scored for the Stars as they dominated the first two periods.Bishop was injured with 6:23 remaining in the second period when Garnet Hathaway skated into him behind the net. Khudobin closed out the period with three saves, and Bishop returned for the third, when he made 12 of his 21 stops. Hathaway was penalized for goaltender interference. The Stars’ starter underwent the NHL’s concussion protocol late in the second period and into the second intermission.“He just kind of hit me in the chin there,” Bishop said. “He got me decently good.“I passed (the protocol), so I went out for the third. It’s a little easier with the intermission there. I kind of regrouped and got ready for the third.”Montgomery said the decision to return was Bishop’s.“He said, ‘Yeah. I want to go back in.’ I’m going to let him make that call, especially when he was so calm and in control.”The combined shutout was the first in the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas franchise’s 51 seasons and the 67th in NHL history, according to the league.Later in the second period Andrej Sustr Jersey Womens , after Hathaway hit the Stars’ Tyler Seguin, Dallas defenseman Roman Polak went after Hathaway and drew a roughing penalty. The Dallas penalty killers, after allowing three power-play goals at Colorado on Saturday, killed Polak’s penalty and three others.“There was an intent there by Hathaway to run into (Seguin), who had no idea he was going to get hit,” Montgomery said. “Good job by Roman Polak.”Dallas returned from an 0-4 trip to win their fifth straight home game. The Pacific Division-leading Flames had won three straight and eight of nine.“We had two days off where everyone got to say hello to their kids, their wives, and enjoy the great weather here in Dallas, Montgomery said. “You come with a new refreshed mentality http://www.flyersshoponline.com/authentic-nolan-patrick-jersey , and I think it showed right from the start.”David Rittich stopped 26 shots for the Flames. The Stars’ 12th shot gave them a 1-0 lead at 12:15 of the first period. Tyler Seguin passed from just behind the goal line to the front of the net, where Benn easily deflected it past Rittich.Dallas outshot Calgary 14-6 and won 17 of 24 faceoffs (71 percent) in the first period.“We were poor early,” Calgary coach Bill Peters said. “Didn’t win the faceoffs. Therefore, never had the puck and therefore you see the discrepancy in the shots.”Dallas took a 2-0 lead at 17:17 of the second when the puck went from Martin Hanzal to Faksa in the slot. He put the puck on his backhand and slid it into the right corner. For Tuesday’s game, Faksa moved from centering a line to playing left wing on Hanzal’s line.“They just had two guys going after Marty, so I tried to go to the net and it bounced to me. I saw the goalie go poke-check and I get kind of lucky I made it.”Rittich’s season record fell to 11-4-1.“He was good again,” Peters said. “He gave us a chance, kept us in the game early. He did his job tonight.”NOTES: In 30 career games against the Flames, Benn has 32 points (17 goals http://www.flyersshoponline.com/authentic-travis-konecny-jersey , 15 assists). … After allowing three power-play goals in a loss at Colorado on Saturday, the Stars’ penalty killers were 4 for 4. … Dallas F Jason Spezza missed his first game this season because of strep throat. … Calgary LW James Neal (lower-body injury) also sat out for the first time, missing a chance to play against his former team. NEW YORK — On Wednesday night Authentic Marcus Johansson Jersey , the New York Islanders might begin to get an extended look at the goaltender they thought could serve as a No. 1 netminder this season. And the Vegas Golden Knights might finally get re-acquainted with their biggest offseason addition.Goalie Robin Lehner could receive a second straight start for the Islanders on Wednesday night, when they host the Golden Knights — and possibly center Paul Stastny — at Barclays Center.Article continues below ...The Islanders lost their most recent game Monday, when they fell to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in the shootout at Nassau Coliseum. The Golden Knights last played Sunday, when they beat the visiting Dallas Stars 4-2.Lehner, making his first start of the month, recorded 23 saves Monday night for the Islanders (14-11-4). It was just the 12th start this year for Lehner, who was expected to be the top goalie for New York when it signed him to a one-year deal in July.Lehner posted a shutout against the San Jose Sharks in his Islanders debut Oct. 8 and allowed two goals or fewer in four of his first seven starts. But he suffered a back injury against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 30 and has made only five starts since, a span in which he’s gone 0-3-2.Thomas Greiss, meanwhile, has gone 8-4-1 since Nov. 1 to solidify himself as the Islanders’ number one goalie.“In the beginning, when I played good Michael Hutchinson Jersey Womens , they let me play,” Greiss told Newsday. “When Greiss played good, they let him play. That’s the way it should be.”Greiss has never been a season-long No. 1 goalie, though, so the Islanders could give Lehner a second straight start to see if he has begun to recover the form that made him a solid netminder earlier this decade for the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres. The Golden Knights (17-14-1) know what they have in Stastny, whom they signed to a three-year deal in July with the hopes he could get Vegas over the top after a stunning expansion season in which it advanced to the Stanley Cup Final. But Stastny, who collected 53 points last season for the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets, suffered a lower-body injury against the Sabres Oct. 8 and hasn’t played since. He accompanied the Golden Knights to New York and skated at practice Tuesday.Vegas coach Gerald Gallant said Tuesday he hoped Stastny can return to game action during the four-game road trip that begins Wednesday — the Golden Knights will also visit the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and the Columbus Blue Jackets — but didn’t say if he could play against the Islanders.“He’s been out for a long time, but he’s a very important player,” Gallant told reporters following practice. “We signed him in the summertime and we think he’s a real elite two-way player.”Marc-Andre Fleury http://www.officialdevils.com/authentic-adidas-miles-wood-jersey , the Golden Knights No. 1 goalie, is likely to get the start in net Wednesday. Fleury is 23-11-5 in 42 regular-season games against the Islanders.Lehner lost his only start against the Golden Knights on March 10, when he made 33 saves as the Sabres fell 2-1 in the shootout. Greiss has never faced Vegas. The Islanders are the only team the Golden Knights haven’t beat. New York earned a 6-3 win at Barclays Center on Oct. 30, 2017 and recorded a 2-1 in Las Vegas on Jan. 25. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sabres coach Phil Housley could overlook the blown leads and the defensive miscues. What mattered more was how Buffalo persevered behind goalie Linus Ullmark’s 41 saves and forward Sam Reinhart capping a two-point game by scoring the lone shootout goal in a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.“We’ve got to learn to tighten it up, but I’ll give the guys credit, we found a way to win,” Housley said.Buffalo led by two in the second period but allowed the Wild to force overtime with 1:37 remaining in the third, when Zach Parise jammed in a loose puck at the left post. The Sabres, however, didn’t let down and won for just the third time in nine games. In the process Nico Hischier Jersey , they also eased the criticisms directed at a team that had fallen out of the playoff picture by going 8-14-4 since a 10-game winning streak in November.“I like the way they stuck together,” Housley said. The game wasn’t decided until the third round of the shootout on a goal Reinhart didn’t initially realize went in.Driving in from the left wing, Reinhart snapped a shot that goalie Devan Dubnyk got a piece of with his right arm. The puck, however, had enough on it to dribble into the net.“I had no idea. I was just kind of turning up and just heard the crowd,” Reinhart said. “It was nice to hear.”And there was no mistaking the cheers that followed a moment later, when Parise’s backhand sailed high and wide of the top right corner of the net.Reinhart had an assist and scored to break a 3-all tie 6:25 into the third period by deflecting in Jake McCabe’s pass. Jack Eichel set up two goals and C.J. Smith also scored in a game the Sabres never trailed.Buffalo’s once anemic power-play unit converted both opportunities, on goals from Evan Rodrigues and Rasmus Dahlin. The two goals matched the Sabres’ combined output in their previous 11 games during which Buffalo went 2 of 28 with the man advantage.Minnesota defenseman Jared Spurgeon scored twice and Charlie Coyle also scored during a three-goal second period. Dubnyk stopped 35 shots. The Wild dropped to 0-1-2 in their past three games, matching their second-longest skid of the season. On the bright side, Minnesota earned a point in its second straight outing after rallying from a third-period deficit in a 4-3 overtime loss to Chicago on Saturday.“You have to have that ability to come back, but I’d love to see us play with the lead a little bit Dan Hamhuis Jersey Womens ,” Parise said. “It gets tough. You stress yourself out always fighting trying to come from behind. We’ve got to get ourselves a lead.”Buffalo bounced back after opening a seven-game homestand with a 7-3 loss to Chicago on Friday night.Housley used the three-day break between games to attempt to give his slumping team a spark by shuffling his top three lines and defensive pairings. He most notably split up Buffalo’s All-Star pairing of Eichel and forward Jeff Skinner. Eichel centered Kyle Okposo and Conor Sheary, while Skinner moved to a line centered by rookie Casey Mittelstadt. The moves appeared to pay off when Buffalo’s revamped second power-play unit converted on Rodrigues’ goal 4:31 into the game. The Sabres built a 3-1 edge 11:33 into the second when Dahlin’s shot from inside the blue line went in off Spurgeon’s stick in front.Defensive lapses led to the Wild tying the game at 3 before the period was over.Spurgeon scored 3:10 later, when he was allowed to break in up the right side, drive around the net and wrap in a shot.Coyle tied it at 3 with 2:55 left in the second period. Ullmark stopped Greg Pateryn’s shot from the right point and Luke Kunin slipped the rebound under the goalie but off the right post. Coyle beat two Sabres defenders to put the loose puck into the open net.NOTES: Wild coach Bruce Boudreau did not have an update on captain Mikko Koivu, who sustained an undisclosed injury and did not return after colliding with Buffalo’s Tage Thompson in the first period. … Smith played a day after being recalled from AHL Rochester, where he had five goals and seven assists in eight games after being demoted from Buffalo. … Kunin and Kyle Rau played for Minnesota a day after being called up from AHL Iowa. … Wild D Anthony Bitetto, claimed off waivers from Nashville on Jan. 25, played his first game with Minnesota.UP NEXTWild: Host the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.Sabres: Continue their seven-game homestand against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.
Looks Like Someone Has a Sixpack of the Mondays I think it is exciting that the Redskins are doing...exactly what a team does when it is Straight Outta Running Backs. The idea of adding a player like Adrian Peterson is the kind of thing that would blow this town’s mind...six years ago. Listen Authentic Da'Ron Payne Jersey , I am NOT poo-pooing the addition of a veteran running back who—if and when healthy—is capable of providing competent, if not slightly above average production behind a solid offensive line. If our line is ready to go week one, I have little doubt that Adrian Peterson could pound out a similar stat line as Rob Kelley. I don’t, however, think that Peterson would be coming to take over that job from Fat Rob, and I am not even completely convinced that the team likes the idea of Peterson over a fully healthy Samaje Perine. We should all pump the brakes when it comes to being “saved” by a veteran running back. As I said earlier in this space, with the loss of the uber-talented Derrius Guice, the success of the rushing attack is going to be as much—if not more—on the ability of the line as it is on the back. (This was mostly the case already, though Guice has/had the look of a guy who could find yards not given to him by the line.) The era of short-lived running backs has been one of the longest and enduring eras in the NFL, and it ain’t ending anytime soon. Teams that have a bell cow, or stud/superman athlete are positioned ahead of the pack, while the rest of the league’s depth charts are littered with good players that have limitations leading their running games. Without Guice, the Redskins find themselves in the latter category, and that won’t change with the addition of a guy over the age of 30 who has already logged one or two (or more) knee/leg injuries. That doesn’t mean the addition of a player like Peterson won’t make the Redskins better, but I just want us to be clear on how it makes us better. (Same goes for Jamaal Charles and other vets we may work out.)Over the weekend, there appeared to be more coaches and trainers in the area where the running backs were practicing than actual running backs. I think we had three guys running plays. Assuming for a moment that Byron Marshall and Samaje Perine are both unavailable to play the first week of the season, we would be be suiting up Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Kapri Bibbs. It is not exactly the way the team drew it up even a month ago, but there you have it. Marshall could even be lost for the season, meaning Perine would be the only other guy right now with a chance to help. Adrian Peterson can provide value in a situation like this. We can’t ask him to drop 2,000 yards and make us all forget about losing Guice, but we can ask him to eat up some reps to keep the balance of our stable from being overworked. We can ask him to use those veteran eyes and find holes that only a guy with his experience can shoot for, and we can ask him to be a leader from Monday to Saturday. I could be wrong of course, but working around a guy like AP must have some kind of payoff for the younger players. The whole point is Authentic Adrian Peterson Jersey , we are deep into Plan B at running back. Deeeeeeeeeeeeep. We aren’t “fixing” the loss of Guice. We are desperately trying to put the right mix of backs in pads on Sundays so that Alex Smith can lead a productive and efficient offense. This all might make perfect sense to most of you...but names shine bright in people’s heads around here (everywhere probably). Guys like Larry Johnson, Shaun Alexander and T.J. Duckett come to mind when I think of running back additions to the Redskins that we (cough, cough, me, cough) may have gotten too excited about. Anytime you lose the kind of talent that exits the building when a player like Guice goes down, someone or some position group inherits additional weight to shoulder. The offensive line is already one of the most important position groups in the game, but the Redskins unit will have to find a way—if possible—to raise their game and pave roads for slightly less talented folks. The good news for Redskins fans is that the team has a group of five starters that I feel confident in saying is up to that task. Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff are among the best in the game at their respective positions. The Jets found that out during joint practices—the word is out that New York’s defensive line (including Leonard Williams) was completely owned by the Redskins OL in drills. To me, a big part of helping the line compete at the highest level possible is the athleticism of Alex Smith. I always thought—and still think—that Kirk Cousins is an athletic dude, but Smith has his him beat. If you look back and recall how the Redskins were able to run teams over with Robert Griffin III at quarterback and a late-round rookie running back (Alfred Morris), it was the threat of the RG3’s legs. We are seeing some of that in the preseason as Alex Smith has read the defensive end on running plays. I don’t think Jay Gruden wants his 33-year old signal caller running as much as Griffin tried to in 2012, but the impact that kind of threat has on the offensive line’s ability to push guys around is real. Put simply, that kind of threat puts guys on the wrong foot, or worse, on skates. When 300+ pounders get you leaning the wrong way, or hesitating on the wrong foot, it’s over. If Alex Smith is able to be effective on some read-option plays early, the running backs we have will be plenty able to be effective as well.I hope people paid special attention to the defensive line the other night. Seeing our last TWO first round picks lined up next to each other was quite the treat. (This has been therapeutic for me, and I hope you have been able to draw the same kind of happiness from watching Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne battle.) As much attention as we are paying to our offensive ground game—and rightfully so—the Redskins inability to stop the run has been as much our fatal flaw as anything. I don’t know how else to say it except to say that this defensive line is as good or better than 75% of you have ever seen in burgundy and gold (maybe more). Injuries change everything, but as of now, this defense stands ready to get off the field a lot more often than last year’s edition. One of the many beneficiaries of an improved defensive line (and we have made the point that pretty much everyone benefits when you upgrade the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball) is the secondary. We know that pressure forces quarterbacks to make quicker decisions, which can force turnovers by itself, but our defensive line has the ability to place opposing offenses into far worse situations than they were in last year. Defensive backs can’t cover forever, so a better pass rush does limit that, but by succeeding at a higher degree against the run http://www.washingtonredskinsteamonline.com/preston-smith-jersey , the Redskins defense will likely face more long yardage plays on second and third downs. In these scenarios, routes take a beat or two longer to develop, the quarterback takes an extra step or two back, and defensive backs have just a sliver of more room to operate. From disrupting passing lanes to keeping quarterbacks from setting their feet, our defensive line could finally create the kinds of opportunities for our secondary from which we see other defenses around the league routinely benefit.I so desperately wanted to talk linebackers here, but we have a themed piece due today for the network that asks us about some thing or things that we are most excited about. While I do continue to beat the drum on our defensive line, the linebackers factor heavily into my excitement as well. Instead, I’ll leave today with the question: Is the third preseason game still that meaningful? Does it matter where your team is developmentally? Is it still a “dress rehearsal” or have we kind of entered a new era of preseason football where the last two games are going to be played extensively by the bottom of the 90-man roster? For my money, I am no longer feeling what has been a somewhat established reality. I just don’t think it is that big a deal anymore and I think it is going to drive a real change to whatever the preseason looks like after the next collective bargaining soap opera. DeSean Jackson has reportedly asked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a trade before the NFL's trade deadline on Tuesday, October 30th. Jackson signed with the Bucs last year after spending 3 seasons with the Redskins. The Redskins were interested in keeping DeSean Jackson when he hit free agency, but weren't willing to give him the money he was being offered. Jackson signed a 3 year, $33.5 million contract with the Buccaneers. The Redskins gave DJax a 3 year, $24 million deal in 2014 when the Philadelphia Eagles made him a surprise cut. If the Redskins would be able to pull off a trade to get Jackson back, they would be on the hook for half of his $11 million salary this year, and $10 million next year that is not guaranteed. Washington has between $9.7-10.5 million in cap space available depending on which site is providing the numbers. The Redskins have multiple issues in the WR group this season, and have been dealing with injuries since the preseason. Second-year receiver Robert Davis suffered a leg injury before the season started that put him on IR. Rookies Cam Sims and Trey Quinn both had high ankle sprains in Week 1 ending their seasons early(Quinn is expected to return from IR soon). Jamison Crowder has missed the last two games and is out again this week with an ankle sprain. Paul Richardson Jr. has been dealing with shoulder and knee injuries most of the season, and is questionable again this week. Josh Doctson has a never-ending heel injury, and his stats are inspiring anyone yet. Maurice Harris missed the first half of the season, and has only recorded three catches in each of the last three games.Alex Smith had his best year in the league last season, and he got a lot help from WR Tyreek Hill opening up defenses. DeSean Jackson has the ability to take the top off of a defense, which is something the Redskins have been missing recently. Jackson reportedly would love to come back to Washington, and enjoyed working with Jay Gruden. Is a reunion good for both sides, and at what price? cheap football jerseys
Panthers vs Cowboys could come down to the run The football season is (finally) upon us. On Sunday Cheap Christian McCaffrey Jersey , the Panthers kick things off with a home game versus the Cowboys. Both teams on paper match up fairly. Like the Panthers, the Cowboys are battling their own set of injuries on the offensive line. Both teams sport a quarterback able to control the game and both have a defense that’s talented. But the one position that could control tempo of the game for either team is running back. Ezekiel Elliott battled the drama of a looming six-game suspension last season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Elliott faced his suspension the latter half of the season but not without making some noise first. In a matter of 10 games, Elliott managed to rush for 983 yards. He’s fast, he has power, he has agility, and he’s one of the best in the NFL. There’s also no doubt about it, Elliott will be ready to play on Sunday and he’ll be running harder than ever. The Cowboys have an up and coming quarterback in Dak Prescott. However, Prescott doesn’t have the same talent at wide receiver he once had with the release of Dez Bryant in the offseason. Dallas has a young receiver in Michael Gallup and their other option is Allen Hurns — a former Jaguars standout. If things go faulty Cheap Kawann Short Jersey , Cowboys will have to rely heavily on Elliott. Thankfully for the Panthers, they have one of the best defenders in the league in Luke Kuechly. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said in the offseason that he’d like to see Christian McCaffrey get 25-30 touches per game. It’s also clear that first year offensive coordinator Norv Turner anticipates a running back who can tear up a defense on every down. Christian McCaffrey can run routes and run the ball out of the backfield. He is versatile in terms of style. Cam Newton can throw and he can run. Unfortunately for Newton, he’s now backed up by a patchwork version of an offensive line. DeMarcus Lawrence is a beast of a defensive end and is Dallas’ best defensive player. Last season, Lawrence had a career high 14.5 sacks and is looking for another stellar season. Newton will be pressured and he could be stopped if Taylor Moton doesn’t play his part. In turn, CMC could be the game changer if things don’t go well in the air. With pressure in the air for both teams, there will be plenty of running on the field. Whoever can utilize their run game better will likely take the win.Panthers 2018 season opener countdown: 28 days to go We are 28 days away from the beginning of the Carolina Panthers 2018 season. That means today we take a closer look at the Panthers 2018 third round pick, safety Rashaan Gaulden. That also means we’re exactly 4 weeks away from football.Rashaan Gaulden, SafetyBioHeight: 6’Weight: 200 lbsAge: 23College: TennesseeNFL Experience: RookieRashaan Gaulden is the first safety drafted by the Carolina Panthers since Tre Boston. The safety position has never been particularly valued when constructing Rivera’s defenses so it is no surprise that it has taken the Panthers this long to address what many of us have long considered a shaky position on the roster.Gaulden fits the mold that Rivera has seemingly often sought when filling out his roster: he’s a little bit older than his peers Cheap Greg Olsen Jersey , not quite as a fast, and highly effective at crashing downfield to stop the run.Gaulden has already started turning heads at training camp with a few impressive plays, not to mention at least one unnecessary hit, but don’t look for him to crack the starting line up any time soon. Rivera loves playing veterans more than league commissioner Roger Goodell loves bungling a public relations crisis. Mike Adams played serviceably as a strong safety —Gaulden’s natural position — last year and won’t loose his job to anything short of hip replacement surgery. Expect the rookie to feature heavily in the rotation at strong safety, and possibly in more run-balanced big nickel formations, for 2018. The starting job should definitely be on the table for him next year.

Patrick Mahomes has never lost an NFL game as the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs Womens D.J. Swearinger Jersey , beating the Broncos last season and the Chargers and Steelers to start this season. He's also never started a game at Arrowhead Stadium. That moment comes Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, and it's one that Mahomes has thought about ever since the Chiefs traded up to select him 10th overall last year.Because as much fun as it was to win a trio of games on the road, performing for his home fans figures to be quite a party."I'm extremely excited," Mahomes said. "I can't wait to run on the field and hear them roar."You can bet there will be plenty of noise for Mahomes, given the way he's performed two games into the season. He's tossed an NFL-record 10 touchdown passes, has yet to throw an interception, and he already has Chiefs fans wondering whether this is the season their playoff nightmares end."Remember, it's only been two games," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "I understand the excitement. I get it. But when you're in the grinder like he is, like I am 鈥?the rest of the team 鈥?you don't worry about all that other stuff. You worry about a really good team coming in here."Besides Womens Tress Way Jersey , the 49ers (1-1) have a fairly high-profile quarterback of their own.Jimmy Garoppolo was perfect in five starts to finish last season, and while he's had trouble with interceptions the first two weeks, he's also a big reason why San Francisco won a shootout against the Lions last week. Garoppolo threw a pair of touchdown passes in the 30-27 victory."I think it's good to have a mindset of you hold yourself to a high standard," he said, "so when you do that, you want to perform at your best. You try to not make any mistakes."Mahomes and Garoppolo each had time to learn that lesson under quarterbacks that rarely make an error: Alex Smith with the Chiefs last year and Tom Brady when Garoppolo was with the Patriots."I think it's tremendous for a quarterback to sit his first year," Garoppolo said. "You kind of try to put yourself in that situation, how to learn from it, what you would do if you were in the spot they were in. There's a ton of things that you could benefit from."Such as how to win in a tough road environment like Arrowhead Stadium.Or in the case of Mahomes, how to win in one of the most favorable home venues in the NFL."I know he's looking forward to it Youth Adrian Peterson Jersey ," Reid said. "Should be a heck of a game."SPREADING THE WEALTHThe Chiefs have already had three different receivers with 100-yard games, while running back Kareem Hunt is coming off a 75-yard rushing performance against Pittsburgh. In other words, the Chiefs may boast the deepest, most versatile set of skill position players in the NFL."We can all contribute to the game, no matter how many targets, no matter how many yards," wide receiver Sammy Watkins said. "We're really about winning. That's all we're about."STEPPING UPThe 49ers faced questions at running back after projected starter Jerick McKinnon went down with a season-ending knee injury a week before the opener.Second-year back Matt Breida has filled in nicely and leads the NFL in rushing after two weeks with 184 yards."A lot of people thought this year that I wasn't going to get as much playing time as I did last year," Breida said. "It sucks that Jet went down, but I feel like me and (Alfred Morris) are going to be able to help this team out a lot and have a great year."GETTING DEFENSIVEThere should be points-a-plenty on Sunday. The Chiefs are allowing 430 yards passing and 508 yards per game, last in the league Youth Josh Doctson Jersey , while the 49ers are in the 20s in each of the statistical categories. San Francisco is also minus-2 in turnover margin.FOSTER RETURNSSan Francisco figures to get a big boost on defense from Reuben Foster, who was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse and personal conduct policy. The linebacker excelled in 10 games when he was healthy last season, showing an ability to shut down the running game and the athleticism to guard running backs and tight ends. Those skills could be crucial this week against Hunt and tight end Travis Kelce.LOCKDOWN SHERMANOpposing quarterbacks are staying away from 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, even as he comes back from last year's season-ending Achilles' tendon surgery. Sherman has allowed one catch in 99 coverage snaps and only been targeted four times, according to Pro Football Focus."Sherman is a very instinctual player," Mahomes said. "They have a big defensive line. It's going to be a big challenge, especially our first home game. We just have to keep getting better."Washington Redskins Training Camp Day 11 live updates Redskins players and coaches held the tenth day of training camp in Richmond, VA yesterday. The Lions were down to one regular wide receiver Carolina Panthers Hats , and they lost their leading rusher in the second half. And yet, it was enough. The Lions held on for a sloppy 20-19 win over the Panthers, in a game short on style points on either side.It will likely prove Pyrrhic for the Lions (4-6), as running back Kerryon Johnson left the game with a knee injury and didn’t return. He had 87 yards on 15 carries before leaving, and the Lions don’t have anyone nearly as productive as him in the backfield. They were also playing without wide receiver Marvin Jones (after trading away Golden Tate), but Kenny Golladay responded, with eight catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. That was the majority of Matthew Stafford‘s 220 passing yards. But that was enough to beat the Panthers (6-4) on a day when they didn’t run well (16 carries for 56 yards), didn’t pass efficiently enough to make up for it Carolina Panthers Womens Hoodie , and kicker Graham Gano missed a field goal and an extra point. Those kicking struggles likely led the Panthers to go for a two-point conversion which would have won the game on the road. But Cam Newton‘s pass to Jarius Wright was too high, and the Lions were able to run out the clock. It was a curious decision to not play for overtime, and the decision cost the Panthers their second straight road game.Where were you when the Panthers shocked the Rams in double overtime? This week at SB Nation we’re talking about the memories we have of amazing moments from our favorite teams’ past. The Carolina Panthers—being a young franchise—certainly have a smaller pool to choose from than some of our more longstanding teams in the NFL, but just because we haven’t been around as long as some of the other guys doesn’t mean we don’t have a few outstanding moments to reflect on every now and then.Perhaps the greatest memory that Panthers fans have is from a single play in one of the most exciting playoff games in NFL history. If you’ve been a fan of the Panthers for longer than a decade you already know what I’m talking about—hell, you figured it out when you saw the image I used for the article on the home page—but, for those of us who weren’t around back then, I’ll provide a brief history of what I believe to be the most exciting moment in Panthers history: X-Clown.The Panthers were in St. Louis to face the Rams (aka ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’) for a spot in the NFC Championship Game. It was a back-and-forth affair for most of the afternoon, and as fate would have it the score was tied 23-23 at the end of regulation. The two teams would need to settle this in overtime. Here’s a quick summary of the overtime period:The Panthers had the ball to begin the second overtime period. It was 3rd and 14 Womens Customized Carolina Panthers Jerseys , and you probably know what happened next. But, if not—this is for you.Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith. 69 yards. Touchdown. Panthers win!The Panthers would go on to beat the Eagles in the NFC Championship game to advance to their first Super Bowl in franchise history (but we won’t talk about what happened in that game). The Rams were never the same after that loss, and would head into a downward spiral that lasted over the next decade that eventually saw them leave St. Louis for Los Angeles, where they made the playoffs in 2017 for just the second time since losing to the Panthers.Where were you when Smitty caught that pass from Delhomme and scampered into the end zone, Panthers fans? I was where I always am during Panthers games—sitting on my couch. What about you? Were you watching at home? Were you one of the lucky fans who got to see that moment live? Share your memories of that game with us!
Ravens’ Jimmy Smith opens up about four-game suspension Ravens star cornerback Jimmy Smith spoke to the media for the first time on Tuesday since suffering a season-ending Achilles injury and receiving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s PED policy.Following his injury in Baltimore’s Week 13 win over the Lions Baltimore Ravens Hats , the NFL announced that Smith would be suspended for four games. Instead of appealing it, he decided to serve the suspension while on injured reserve.“Last year, I took some pre-workouts. I’m not even sure which one it is, to be honest with you. You have to be conscious of what you put in your body, and I should’ve been a lot more conscious of what pre-workouts I was putting in there, and I got popped,” Smith said via the team’s official website. “I was going to appeal it, but when I tore my Achilles, I just took it and went home.”Smith did not reveal what supplements he took, but the NFL does have a lengthy list of what a player can not take. The oft-injured cornerback has suffered several major setbacks in his career, but he continues to work his way back in spite of his injuries. Smith will be entering his eighth season with the Ravens, but he has only appeared in all 16 games during a regular season twice — 2013 and 2015. Among the injuries he has suffered during his NFL career, his Achilles injuries appear to have been the most costly. He landed on injured reserve the last two seasons due to them. However, Smith would disagree with that notion.“I’ll tell you right now that the Lisfranc is probably the injury that keeps on giving. It never goes away Baltimore Ravens Womens Hoodie , it seems. For me, the Achilles has not been that difficult at all,” Smith said via the team’s official website.Smith was having, arguably, the best season of his entire career last year after coming off an Achilles injury and still dealing with the ramifications of it. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the best cornerbacks last year before his season-ending injury, and he likely would have been selected to an All-Pro team and the Pro Bowl. “It sucks. I’m not going to act like it doesn’t. It just seems like I’m constantly trying to fight just to get back to even instead of training and excelling better and progressing even more. It’s always getting back even, getting back to just being healthy,” Smith said via the team’s official website. The “it” Smith is referring to is his poor injury luck during his NFL career. His All-Pro talent has never been a question, especially as of late, but the issue has also been his health. If he can stay healthy, he is without a doubt one of the best cornerbacks in the league, but as of late, that has been a big ‘if.’Smith’s current contract runs through the 2019 season, but due to his injury history Womens Customized Baltimore Ravens Jerseys , some have speculated that the Ravens could move on from the veteran cornerback following this season. If Baltimore decides to part ways with him next offseason, they would save $9.5 million if he is a pre-June 1 cut, while only incurring $6.675 million in dead money, per SpoTrac. Regardless of his future in Baltimore, Smith is en route to completing a miraculous comeback as he is on the practice field, as a full-participant, merely seven months after rupturing his Achilles. The Ravens are exercising caution with their veteran cornerback as he was given the last two days off to progress in his recovery. With an extended training camp schedule, Baltimore has no reason to force him into action immediately. It was anticipated that Smith would start the season — or at least training camp — on the PUP list, but that was not the case. Throughout the early stages of training camp, he has received high praise from several players and coaches for his mindset and work ethic as he is attempting to return from another season-ending injury. “Really, you kind of hurt for him, because he’s plagued himself into that position, really, year after year www.ravenscheapstores.com , and the injuries have taken their toll. And then he kills himself to get back, and hopefully, this will be the year where he can stay injury-free the whole time,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said via the team’s official website. “He’s worked really hard, and he’s really talented, and he really is conscientious. So, I’m really, I’m in his corner. I want to see him do well.”Ravens News 7/31: Roster projection, practice reports and more Baltimore Ravens 53-man roster projection: A first guess at how things could shape up - Aaron KasinitzIn total, Kasinitz believes four 2018 draft picks will not make the final 53 man roster - Jordan Lasley, Greg Senat, Bradley Bozeman and Zach Seiler. Questionably, he expects Vince Mayle and Kamalei Correa to make the club due to their special teams ability but does not include a return specialist in his roster projection.Practice Report 7/30: Jordan Lasley, Jaleel Scott Flash With Deep Touchdowns - Garrett DowningHopefully Mark Andrews is ready to return to the field soon Baltimore Ravens T-Shirt , the rookie could definitely benefit from the reps.Ravens camp highlights: Strong finish for offense on Monday morning - Edward LeeRosburg’s preferences for his coverage and return units will probably decide who earns the final few spots on roster cutdown day. Between Chris Moore, Javorius Allen, Patrick Ricard, Nick Boyle, Patrick Onwuasor, Kenny Young, Albert McClellan, Tavon Young, Anthony Averett, Anthony Levine, Chuck Clark and DeShon Elliott, the coordinator has plenty of potential special teams ‘aces’ to choose from.
Baker Mayfield may have discovered why the Baltimore Ravens defense has been so effective this season.Mayfield Womens Michael Crabtree Jersey , a rookie quarterback with the Cleveland Browns, faces Baltimore's second-ranked defense on Sunday. One of the members of that unit, safety Tony Jefferson, received a text message this week from Mayfield 鈥?one former Oklahoma star reaching out to another."He said, 'I'm watching this film, watching you guys hold,'" Mayfield wrote, according to Jefferson.Jefferson said he replied: "They didn't call it."Jefferson believes Baltimore's success on defense can be attributed to skilled players following a solid game plan."I just think we've been doing a good job executing," Jefferson said Wednesday. "We've worked hard throughout the week on what we want to attack and what we want to do."Operating under first-year defensive coordinator Don Martindale, Baltimore (3-1) has limited the opposition to 275.8 yards per game, a meager 29.8 success rate on third down and is yielding only 16.25 points per game. Most impressive of all, the Ravens have not yet given up a touchdown in the second half. While the players enjoy doing it, they're not fond of hearing about it."We didn't even know it was a stat until you all brought it up," linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "It's kind of like a pitcher with a no-hitter. Thanks for bringing it up. Good job."Coach John Harbaugh broke it down this way: "The guys have gone out and played really well. That's really what it is. They've executed, make plays, turned it over a few times, stopped the run."A solid unit should get even better this week with the return of cornerback Jimmy Smith, who missed the first four weeks of the season serving a suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Now in his eighth season, Smith will probably step right back into the starting lineup if he's ready by Sunday."We'll just have to see in practice how he looks and feels. I mean, he hasn't been here in four weeks," Harbaugh said. "He says he's been training and I'm sure he has. It will be fun to watch him play."Although Brandon Carr and Marlon Humphrey have done well as starters Authentic Za'Darius Smith Jersey , Harbaugh knows you can never have too many solid cornerbacks."It's going to be great to have all those guys that are good cover players," he said. "We can play any coverage we want, the way we want. It gives us a lot of options on defense."The Ravens bottled up veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Sunday night in a 26-14 victory over the Steelers. Pittsburgh went 2 for 12 on third down overall and was held to 47 yards in offense in the second half."I feel like you give up 47 yards in the second half and shut out the Pittsburgh Steelers, that is noteworthy to say the least," Harbaugh said. The next challenge is trying to stop a bold rookie in Mayfield, who has been playing with confidence since making his debut two weeks ago."Ben's seen it all, but Baker Mayfield is pretty advanced," Harbaugh said. "I don't think he's a rookie in the true sense. He seems like he's got a real good feel for the game." The Bengals traveled to Atlanta, a difficult place to win for a road team, and escaped a huge victory. They outlasted Matt Ryan and Julio Jones in a high-scoring affair to improve to 3-1 on the season. Marvin Lewis’s squad has surprised many this season. Cincinnati remains tied atop the division with Baltimore after the Ravens defeated the Steelers on Sunday night. Pittsburgh’s loss drops them to 1-2-1, a disappointing start for a team with high expectations. The Steelers failed to score in the second half. The Browns are also 1-2-1 after falling on the road to Oakland in overtime action. Cleveland had a good opportunity to win, but failed to execute late, as is the case in several of their games this season. Bengals defeat Falcons: 37-36 Late-game heroics After scoring 14 points in each of the first two quarters, the Bengals offense mustered just nine points in the second half. Their defense gave up nearly 500 yards of total offense and forced zero turnovers. And still, the Bengals were able to secure a victory. Down by six points in the fourth quarter, Andy Dalton orchestrated a 16 play, 75-yard touchdown drive. With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Dalton found A.J. Green for a 13-yard touchdown. It was Dalton’s third touchdown of the day, and Green’s fifth touchdown reception on the season. Those two have been in-sync through the first four weeks and will look to keep it rolling against the Dolphins next week. A significant blow In what was difficult for many to watch, Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert broke his ankle midway through the contest and will likely miss the remainder of the season. Eifert has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, and this is yet another disappointing injury to a talented pass-catcher. Eifert brings legit size and route-running ability Authentic Matt Skura Jersey , and is one of Andy Dalton’s go-to targets in the red zone. Prior to exiting the contest, Eifert had four catches, 38 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Kroft and C.J. Uzomah will handle the tight end snaps in his absence. While both are capable pass-catchers, neither can replicate what Eifert brings to the offense. Browns fall to Raiders: 45-42Baker Mayfield’s first start All eyes were on the first overall pick after his electric debut in Week 3. After leading the Browns to their first victory in nearly two years, Mayfield fell short of securing another victory against the Raiders. Baker threw a pick-6 on the opening drive, his first of two interceptions on the day. He also lost two fumbles. In addition to the turnovers, his completion percentage left much to be desired, as he completed just 21/41 passes. On a positive note, however, he threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns. The Browns two losses have been by a combined six points. Mayfield will look for better results in Week 5, when Cleveland returns home to host the Ravens. Controversial Referees Many can argue the Browns would have won this game if it not for a questionable decision by the referees. Cleveland was up 42-34 with two minutes left in the fourth quarter with possession of the ball. On a 3rd & 2, Carlos Hyde rushed for two yards and was originally given the first down. However, after further review, the referees called him short of the marker and the Browns were forced to punt the ball away. Derek Carr led a touchdown drive and hooked up with Jordy Nelson for the two-point conversion, sending the game into overtime. The Browns failed to execute in OT and the Raiders kicked a game-winning field goal. Ravens defeat Steelers: 26-14 Flacco shines in primetime action Joe Flacco continued his strong start to the season on Sunday night. Despite the lack of an effective run game for much of the night, Flacco was accurate and made good decisions. He completed 28/42 passes for 363 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. His quarterback rating of 109.5 was also impressive, and his numbers would look even better if not for several drops by receivers. Flacco connected with 11 different receivers on the night. His performance was far better than the last time the Ravens played on national television, when Flacco struggled against the Bengals in Week 2. Defense comes up big The Ravens defense held their own against the Steelers talented offense. After allowing 14 points in the second quarter, Baltimore shut out Pittsburgh in the second half and picked off Ben Roethlisberger late in the game.Marlon Humphrey and Brandon Carr did a particularly good job of limiting Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster to a combined nine catches and 122 yards on 22 total targets. Baltimore completely took away the Steelers run game, limiting James Connor to just 19 yards on nine carries. The Ravens have not allowed a second half touchdown this season http://www.ravenscheapstores.com/james-hurst-jersey-cheap , a streak they’ll look to continue against Cleveland next week. Steelers fall to Ravens: 14-26 Time to worry about the run game? As mentioned above, the Steelers could not get anything going on the ground. It’s no secret that James Connor is no Le’Veon Bell, but the lack of production out of the backfield is concerning. In Week 1, Connor rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. He appeared to be on his way to becoming a breakout star this season. However, it’s been tough sledding since. Over the past three weeks, Connor has rushed for just 97 yards on 32 carries, good for an average of 3.0 YPC. The Steelers need more balance in the offense, or teams will be able to key in on their receivers as the Ravens did in Week 4. Struggles at Heinz field The Steelers generally perform well at home, but this has been the case to begin the season. Pittsburgh is now 0-2 at home, losing to the Chiefs and Ravens. Things won’t get any easier either. Here are the remaining teams the Steelers host this season, in order; Falcons, Browns, Panthers, Chargers, Patriots, and the Bengals. None of these games will be easy outs, and the Steelers will need a sharp turnaround if they want to improve their home record. The Falcons come to town next week. Despite their 1-3 record, Atlanta’s offense is one of the most potent in the league and the Steelers will have their hands full.
