s left on his nine-yearzBALTIMORE -- In his first year with the Baltimore Orioles, Brian Roberts played shortstop alongside third baseman Cal Ripken, Jr., who was in the final year of what turned out to be a Hall of Fame career. Now in his first season with the New York Yankees, Roberts is lining up next to shortstop Derek Jeter -- whos putting the finishing touches on what appears to be a Hall of Fame career. "Ive definitely been extremely blessed to take part in both of their last years," Roberts said. "They have so many similarities: the way they go about the game, the way they go about their business on and off the field, so professional in both ways, so respected by everyone. When you play with each of them you see why. They both do just do everything the right way, treat people the right way. Its something that all of us can learn from." The 36-year-old Roberts wont soon forget the experience. "We all take things from every place that weve been and people that we play with, but certainly when you play with guys of that calibre and that stature in the game, I think its special for all of us to have the opportunity to do that," he said. Roberts played 51 games at shortstop in 2001, his first year with the Orioles, and has been at second base ever since. After spending 13 years with the Orioles, he signed as a free agent with the Yankees in January. He returned to Camden Yards on Friday for the first time since his departure. "Its crazy," he said in the New York clubhouse. "I dont know if I walked in here one time in my career. Its definitely strange to walk by the home clubhouse and come over here but its kind of a new chapter of life. Im certainly excited to be back. Spent the night in my house. Good to sleep in your own bed sometimes." Roberts was extremely popular in Baltimore, but during the later stages of his career he played sparingly because of a variety of injuries -- most notably a concussion that impacted his 2011 and 2012 seasons. Being healthy with the Yankees was just what he wanted when he opted to play another year. "Its been great. Thats all I was hoping for this year was to have the opportunity to get out and play on a consistent basis and feel healthy and feel like I was contributing," Roberts said. "From that standpoint, its certainly been a year Ive been pleased with." Playing with the Orioles, however, was tough to beat. "Certainly the 13 years that I had in Baltimore were the best years of my life," Roberts said. "No one can take that away from us. Very appreciative to have those years. And now, to do this is just something new." New York manager Joe Girardi expected Roberts to get a warm reception from the fans at Camden Yards. "He put up a lot of big numbers here, did a lot of great things here," Girardi said. "He was a fan favourite for a long time here, so I would hope they would greet him well." When Roberts got to the plate in the second inning, he received a smattering of applause. He then drove the first pitch from Miguel Gonzalez over the right-field scoreboard for his fifth home run of the year. Custom Cowboys Jerseys . LOUIS -- Frederik Andersen made sure the Anaheim Ducks wouldnt go on any kind of a losing streak. The rookie made 34 saves, and Ryan Getzlaf scored his 25th goal to lead the Ducks to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. Anaheim, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped on Friday in Chicago, has won 19 of 21. The Ducks have won nine of their last 11 on the road, and they lead the NHL with 79 points. Anaheim is 20-0-2 at home. Matt Beleskey and Cam Fowler also scored for the Ducks, who have a league-best 37 points on the road. Andersen (12-2) has won three straight. Anaheim had its three-week winning run halted with a 4-2 loss on Friday. Instead of dwelling on the setback, the Ducks took control against the Blues and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first 29:13 against St. Louis. "If you lose, you just want to get back on the horse and win the next night," Andersen said. "We just stayed poised and focused." Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau was pleased with the way his club bounced back. "Its hard to win as many games in a row as we did and lose," he said. "Then youre coming back against (one) of the best percentage teams in the league. It would be pretty easy to say, Hey, we had a good run. Lets take this next one off." But they didnt. "This is a prideful group," Boudreau said. Getzlaf got the turnaround started with a goal just 5:37 in. His tally, off a pass from Corey Perry, set the early tone. "We were able to rebound and play our game," Getzlaf said. "We showed that we needed to bounce back after a tough loss." Getzlaf, who added an assist, has 14 points in the last nine games. Barret Jackman and Jaden Schwartz scored third-period goals for St. Louis, which lost back-to-back games in regulation for just the second time this season. Anaheim scored three times on its first 11 shots against Brian Elliott, who had a franchise-record, 13-game home winning streak snapped.dddddddddddd Beleskey squeezed a shot through Elliott early in the second period. Elliott made the initial save, but the puck trickled through his legs into the net. "I tried to squeeze it," Elliott said. "Its a goal you definitely want back." Fowler then tallied on the power play with a shot from the top of the circle to push the lead to 3-0 midway through the second period. Schwartz got the Blues to within 3-2 with a power-play goal at 14:31 of the third. Andersen took over from there with a key stop of a shot by T.J. Oshie with 2.6 seconds left. The Blues pulled their goalie with 1:08 remaining, but Andersen held onto the lead. "He was fabulous, good since Day One when he got here," Boudreau said of Anderson. "He was calm. I thought he did a real good job near the end, especially for a first-year guy." Anderson made 15 saves on 17 shots over the final 20 minutes. "We showed a lot of character and kept working for each other," Andersen said. "This shows what kind of team effort we can have." St. Louis is 1-7 against California teams this season. The Blues lost 4-1 to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. "A three-goal deficit in this league against any team is tough," St. Louis captain David Backes said. "Hopefully, we can get something out of that third period." NOTES: St. Louis LW Alexander Steen returned to the lineup after missing 11 games because of a concussion. IRVING, Texas - DeMarco Murray had no interest in discussing his future with the Dallas Cowboys a day after a division-round loss to Green Bay.Dez Bryant didnt even show up when the locker room was open to reporters Monday, far from unexpected when he knew the primary topic would be his huge catch that could have set up a late touchdown getting reversed on replay in a 26-21 defeat. Not to mention whether hell be back. The dominant question of the off-season — along with how soon coach Jason Garrett gets a new contract — will be the status of the NFL rushing leader in Murray and the leagues top producer of receiving touchdowns in Bryant. Both are free agents, and both would take a big chunk of a salary cap thats still a little tight for the Cowboys even after dumping franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware last year.Im not worried about my future, Murray said shortly after offering a terse I dont know to the question of whether he would be back. I just lost a big game, the biggest game of my life. Just not worried about it right now. Just relax with my family and get away from it for a little bit.Bryant wont be able to get away from questions about the catch that wasnt for a long time, maybe until he gets past the divisional round, if that ever happens. It was a play of such magnitude, even defensive players were getting questions about whether it was a catch, and whether the rule should change.Of course the Cowboys are going to say it was a catch, but several were quick to add that there were other opportunities to get the storied franchise to an NFC championship game for the first time in 19 years. The longest previous gap between conference title games was nine years.I looked at it over and over, defensive end Jeremy Mincey said. It was definitely frustrating. But it shouldnt have even came down to one play. We missed some key tackles and thats what hurt us.A season that began with owner Jerry Jones tamping down expectations by telling thousands of fans at a kickoff luncheon that his team faced an uphill battle ended with the first playoff berth — and post-season victory — since 2009.It didnt matter what anyone else had to say outside of these walls, said cornerback Brandon Carr, who didnt have an interception for the first time in his career and could be asked to take a pay cut if he wants to return. It was motivating, entertaining at times. We had a mission and task at hand. Although it was a good season, we still feel like we had much more to prove. We werent done with our journey.Jones may have a hard time keeping play-caller Scott Linehan, a catalyst for Murrays huge season, and defensive co-ordinator Rod Marinelli. The former Detroit coach made the Cowboys competitive with several bargain-basement pieces, and Dallas was much better than the leagues worst defence from a year ago.We have a special thing going with all the pieces that are in this building right now, Carr said. We have something special brewing and the chemistrys definitely coming around and you can see it on the field.Tony Romo was still standing at the end of a season that started with the 34-year-old quarterback coming off back surgery. He missed a game with another back injury, and played through a left knee injury in the loss to the Packers.Bryant is likely to rejoin Romo because the Cowboys can use the franchise tag on him at least once if they cant agree on a long-term deal. If Murray returns as well, Romo will also have trusty tight end Jason Witten and a young offensive line considered one of the best in the league. You just dont know how many opportunities like this will come around, Romo said after the game. That is the hardest part. You just dont know. You know everything you had to do to get to this point and now you have to do it again.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuylerOrlando Scandrick Jersey . Four years after winning gold on home ice in Vancouver, the Canadians will get a chance to make it two in a row Sunday against Sweden after beating the United States 1-0 in the Olympic semifinals Friday at Bolshoy Ice Dome. This time, though, it was made possible by a few players who werent around in 2010, namely Jamie Benn and Carey Price. Benn scored for Canada on a pretty pass from fellow newcomer Jay Bouwmeester, and Price -- chosen by coach Mike Babcock to start over Vancouver golden goalie Roberto Luongo -- had 31 saves to make it stand up. Though it didnt show up on the scoresheet, Sidney Crosby was flying up and down the ice, creating chances seemingly at will. The captain still doesnt have a goal in this tournament, but along with the rest of his teammates he has raised his level of play just in time to play Sweden for the gold medal on Sunday. The United States will play for the bronze Saturday against Finland, which lost to the Swedes 2-1 in the other semifinal. Guaranteed either a gold or silver, this is the first time Canada has won a medal in an Olympics held outside North America since NHL players began participating in 1998. Canada and the U.S. traded chances throughout the first period. Just 90 seconds in, Crosby forced a turnover that led to a quality opportunity for Patrice Bergeron in front. More than five minutes in, Phil Kessel patiently waited for John Carlson to cross the blue-line and get a one-timer off that Price snagged with his glove. Not long after that, Crosby created a chance for Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Quick made a big save on Bergeron. Quick finished with 36 saves. It took until early in the second period for Canada to get on the board, thanks to a heads-up play from Bouwmeester. The smooth-skating defenceman waited it out with the puck above the left face-off circle, allowing Benn to find open space between Brooks Orpik and Carlson, playing together for the first time at these Olympics because of a hand injury to Paul Martin. A perfect sliding pass across the ice from Bouwmeester hit Benns stick right on the tape and deflected past Quick at the 1:41 mark of the second. At that point, Canada tilted the ice and spent much of the period hemming the Americans in their own end. The result was more brilliance from Quick, who had to slide post-to-post to rob Benn and oozed confidence.dddddddddddd The same came from Price on the other end, as he didnt flash his glove hand as much as calmly lift it to catch the puck with ease. Canadas victory came a day after the womens team staged an improbable late comeback to beat the United States for its fourth straight gold medal. Babcock and his players said that victory taught them that "you dont give in." Of course the way Team Canada got to the gold-medal game was very different. It hasnt trailed for even one second at these Olympics. That didnt stop the women from trying to use their experience as motivation. Alternate captain Hayley Wickenheiser, starting goalie Shannon Szabados and forward Brianne Jenner were responsible for a letter posted in the mens locker-room that read: "Tonight is yours. Own the moment. We are proof that every minute matters. The podium is reserved for the brave. Earn every inch, dictate the pace. Go get em! From the girls! :)" The men are one win away from giving Canada double gold in hockey for the third time in the past four Olympics. Friday nights game was skated almost at the blistering pace of the one played Feb. 28, 2010, that Canada won 3-2 on Crosbys unforgettable overtime goal. Some of Canadas best players in the Olympic rematch were watching from home four years ago. In addition to Bouwmeester, Benn and Price, Jeff Carter looked like he was playing in another gear and defenceman Alex Pietrangelo and Marc-Edouard Vlasic quietly controlled the game. NOTES -- Canada scratched defenceman P.K Subban on defence and the injured John Tavares at forward. Tavares, who suffered a tournament- and season-ending left knee injury against Latvia, will remain with the team until after the Olympics. Matt Duchene filled his spot in the lineup. ... Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian Flynn tied the game late in the third period to force overtime and produced the lone goal of the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres finished off a home-and-home sweep of the Montreal Canadiens with a 4-3 victory on Saturday. After each teams first four shootout participants were unsuccessful, Tomas Plekanec followed suit for Montreal as Jhonas Enroth calmly turned aside his offering with a stick save. Flynn put an end to the skills competition with a shot into an open net off a slick backhand-forehand deke past a sliding Dustin Tokarski. Zemgus Girgensons and Chris Stewart also scored in regulation for the Sabres, who defeated Montreal 2-1 on Friday. Enroth turned aside 41 shots and stopped five more in the shootout. Jhonas Enroth was great tonight. He made some timely stops, Flynn said. If he saves five in a row, you need to win the game. Brendan Gallagher, Max Pacioretty and Lars Eller all lit the lamp for Montreal, which has lost its last three games. Tokarski made 23 saves in defeat. After Marcus Foligno blocked a shot in the defensive zone, Stewart gathered the puck, raced through the neutral zone, split a pair of defenders and finished off the sequence with a wrister over the shoulder of Tokarski for a 2-1 game 5:57 into the final stanza. Less than two minutes later, Brandon Prust worked the puck behind the net and Eller emerged with it, sending a backhander off the skate of Buffalo defenseman Nikita Zadorov into the net for a tied game. Pacioretty tapped in the rebound of Dale Weises shot from the right side of the net to give Montreal a 3-2 lead with 6:45 left in the third. The lead was short-lived, however, as Flynn backhanded Torrey Mitchells feed from behind the cage into the back of the net 49 seconds later. Enroth made four saves and Tokarski stopped three pucks in the extra session. Girgensons opened the scoring for Buffalo with 5:57 to play in the opening stanza. Nicolas Deslauriers sent a pass to Tyler Ennis, who tipped the puck in on net. Tokarski made the save, but Girgensons was parked in front to chip it over the Montreal netminders shoulder and into the net. Enroth made two big saves to keep Buffalos lead intact early in the second. He dove across the crease to stop Andrei Markovs shot with his blocker and then a few minutes later, he denied David Desharnais off a 2-on-1. Gallaghers shot clanged off the crossbar and hit the knob of Enroths stick at the goal line before ricocheting out of the crease. The play was reviewed and determined to be a good goal at 7:51 of the second. On the ice, I just thought I had hit the post and next thing you know, theyre reviewing it, said Gallagher. The video replays showed it was in and Ill take it. Game Notes Gallaghers goal was the first even-strength goal allowed by Enroth in a span of 296 minutes, 26 seconds, dating back to Nov. 13 when Minnesotas Kyle Brodziak scored at 9:21 of the first period in the Wilds 6-3 win ... Gallagher signed a six-year, $22.5 million contract extension earlier on Saturday ... The Ducks acquired Robidas from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for a conditional fourth-round pick in this years draft. The overall NHL leaders made three deals on the day before the leagues trade deadline, shaking up their roster with 20 games left in the regular season. Anaheim also sent backup goalie Viktor Fasth to Edmonton and shipped forward Dustin Penner to Washington. Although the 37-year-old Robidas wont return from a broken leg for at least two more weeks, the Ducks were eager to acquire a hard-nosed veteran with superior passing skills and a nasty edge to his game. Theyre all attributes Anaheim could use in its attempt to back up its outstanding regular season with playoff success. The Ducks lead the NHL with 91 points and three straight victories heading into Wednesdays game against Montreal, but theyve won just one playoff series since winning their franchises only Stanley Cup title in 2007. Robidas knew he probably didnt have a future with the Stars, who havent discussed a contract extension with him. When he heard Anaheim was interested, he jumped at the chance to play in the post-season for the first time since 2008, when Dallas eliminated the defending champion Ducks in the first round. "Were going for a Stanley Cup, and thats what Ive been waiting for for a long time," said Robidas, who is joining his fourtth NHL club.dddddddddddd "I think its a great opportunity for me, and Im just very excited for the chance the Ducks are giving me." Robidas hasnt played since breaking his leg against Chicago on Nov. 29 while crashing into the boards behind the net, but he has been participating extensively in practice. He had four goals and one assist in 24 games for the Stars this season. "Everything has been going really well," Robidas said of his recovery. "Ive just got a few little things I need to get a little more comfortable." Robidas should add experience and toughness to a defence that has spent the entire season without veteran Sheldon Souray, who got hurt in summer training. Robidas should be familiar to some Ducks fans from that 2008 playoff series in which Anaheims Todd Marchant accidentally broke Robidas nose with the puck -- and Robidas returned to the game shortly afterward. "Thats how I play," Robidas said. "Im not a finesse player. I know my role. I know what I need to do. I know how I need to play, and Im not going to change the way Ive been playing. Im going to be the same player, and I think thats why they came and they got me." Robidas is seventh in Dallas club history with 704 games played. He has 211 points in two stints with Dallas, his home for all but 45 NHL games since 2002. The draft pick acquired by the Stars becomes a third-rounder if the Ducks reach the Western Conference finals and Robidas plays in half their playoff games. PARK CITY, Utah - Two weeks shy of his 36th birthday, "pretty shriveled up" and likely nearing the end of his competitive career, Bode Miller cant help but think of legacies. Not the five Olympic medals, the four world titles and whether he is, as most people think, the best male skier the United States has ever had. Thats for other people to decide. "I think theyre more titles for everyone else," Miller said on Monday at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit. "Youre renting the title until somebody else takes it away. If youre too attached to it, youre going to be bummed out when your rental agreement runs out." No, what matters to him is the impact hes had on skiing. "Its not so much about my legacy as it is about ski racing in general. Ski racing deserves what you can give to it," he said. "Its been the love of my life up until now." Even if its been, to the outside world, something of a tortured relationship. Miller was just 20 when he made his first Olympic team in 1998, too inexperienced even to know what he didnt know. He remembers feeling confident when he stepped into the starting gate, only to get through 15 gates before sailing off the course. By the time he reached the bottom — cartwheeling across the finish line — the Japanese fans greeted him with "raucous applause." "In 98, I was basically throwing the dice," he said. By the time the Turin Olympics rolled around, Miller was skiings biggest star. Like La Bomba and the Herminator before him, his success on the slopes — he won four world titles from 2003 to 2005, and claimed his first overall World Cup title in 2005 — was surpassed only by his larger-than-life personality off them. Raised in rural New Hampshire, he is brash, unconventional and free-spirited. (While most other athletes wore sneakers or boots Monday, Miller sported aqua blue flip-flops.) But the very traits that make him so appealing also were his undoing. Disdainful of the goal-oriented nature of Olympic sports — to say nothing of the celebrity culture that goes with them — Miller found trouble at every turn in Turin. He made waves by refusing to live in the athletes village. He said he had mixed feelings about the U.S. Ski Teams "Best in the World" motto, saying the organization needed to put as much into it as the skiers did. And after all those expectations, he didnt medal, failing even to finish in three of his events. Later, he brushed off criticism of his failure, saying hed managed to "party and socialize at an Olympic level." "Dealing with those kind of tough situations, its obviously part of growing and being a grown-up," Miller said. "When youre under the magnifying glass like that, theres no way to really judge yourself too harshly in hindsight. Obviously, I could have said things differently, I could have done things differently. A lot of other people could have done things differently, too. "I had chances to win, I was prepared. I dont think I did anything dramatically as evil as it was portrayed. But I think thats part of being under the microscope that way, and Im fully capable of dealing with it. It didnt really ruffle me as bad as I think a lot of people would have expected. I just dont seem to get bothered by that stuff that much." Four years later, skiing had a new star in Lindsey Vonn. But the spotlight found Miller once again, this time for all the right reasons. He won a medal of every colour at the Vancouver Olympics, including a gold in the super combined. That gave him a total of five Olympic medals, more than any other U.S. skier. Miller won his 33rd World Cup title, in the downhill at Beaver Creek, in December 2011. But he had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February 2012 and wound up missing the entire 2012-13 season. The break re-energized him, giving him a chance to spend time with his wife and kids. "Being away from the sport was really healthy for me," Miller said. "Ive been in it so long with so little time away that I was definitely taxed ... to a point that I was getting frustrated at times. The fact is, if youre going to do it, the process deserves better than that. Now I think Im in a place where I can participate fully, and not put as much strain on myself." Miller accompanied the rest of the U.S. team to Portillo, Chile, and said his knee feels "perfect" as he readies for his return to competition this month. Asked about his expectations for Sochi, Miller said he intends to "kick (butt)" in what is almost certainly his last Olympics. "Everyone looks for these big epiphanies," he said. "Ive spent lot of time and energy being a ski racer. Ive earned the right to compete at a high level and Ive spent a lot of pain and a lot of energy trying to develop these skills. The Olympics, to me, is just a great opportunity to enjoy that. "Its a perishable process, being a ski racer. Until youre all rotten or shriveled up, you should keep going. Im pretty shriveled up, but Im not all rotten. Not yet." The Blue Jays got some positive news on Monday in regards to shortstop Jose Reyes. MRI results revealed only a mild strain in the 30-year-olds left hamstring. He is currently listed as day-to-day. Reyes MRI was precautionary after Reyes hurt his hamstring on his way to first in the fourth inning of the Jays Saturday afternoon game against the DEtroit Tigers. Concerns were understandably high over the health of the former batting champion after Reyes suffered a sprained ankle one week into the 2013 campaign that forced him out of 66 games. Seattle made the expected roster moves official eight days before teams can start speaking with potential free agents. Bryant had spent his entire career with the Seahawks after being a fourth-round draft pick in 2008, while Rice signed as a free agent before the 2011 season. According to the leagues transaction report, Rice was released with a "failed physical" designation. Both were due hefty salaries in 2014 that didnt necessarily match the production they had shown on the field. Rice had struggled with injuries with the Seahawks and was lost for the 2013 season after Week 8 with a knee injury. Bryant was a unique player as a 300-pound defensive end for the Seahawks, but his playing time had diminished. Seattle should save more than $12 million in salary cap space with the moves. Rice was due $8.5 million in base salary for 2014 and Bryant $4.5 million. "We want to thank both Red and Sidney for their effort, commitment and contribution to the Seattle Seahawks over the last few years," Seattle general manager John Schneider said in a statement. "These are extremely tough decisions, but we wanted to give them a head start on free agency. We wish them well in the future." Both moves were expected to happen and are likely the first in a sseries that will change the makeup of the Super Bowl champions.dddddddddddd Bryant was one of just four players left from before the arrival of Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll. He was given a new contract during the 2012 off-season, but the emergence of Michael Bennett -- one of Seattles top free agent priorities -- appeared to make Bryant expendable. The only players still remaining from the pre-Carroll era are centre Max Unger, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane and punter Jon Ryan. Bryant was also a captain and vocal leader of Seattles league-best defence. He could be an attractive option in free agency for a team seeking a defensive end that can hold the edge in defending the run in a 3-4 defence. Rice had not matched the production that came with his big contract, mostly because of injuries. Rice played in 33 games with 31 starts with 97 receptions for 1,463 yards and 12 touchdowns. But his 2011 season was cut short by a concussion and he was unable to finish the 2013 season after suffering an ACL tear in his knee and being placed on injured reserve. Rice led Seattle in receptions (50) and yards receiving (748) during the 2012 season, one of just two seasons in his career that hes played in all 16 regular-season games. Rice tweeted a goodbye to Seattle fans shortly after his release became official: "The amount of love I have for the .12thman and the (at)Seahawks organization! Thanks for a wonderful experience!" BOSTON -- Instant replay, meet the Pesky Pole. David Ortiz hit a three-run homer high over Fenway Parks right-field foul pole on Wednesday, helping the Boston Red Sox rally for a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. The fair call was confirmed by a replay review, according to Major League Baseballs replay Twitter account. "It was pretty close, but I knew it was fair," said Ortiz, who watched the ball sail into the seats before leaving the batters box. "I wanted to make sure it was fair. I wanted to keep watching it." The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth and brought in Neal Cotts to face Ortiz with one out and two on in the bottom half. Ortiz, who had been 0 for 5 with five strikeouts against Cotts, lined a 1-1 fastball down the right-field line. Because the ball was much higher than the pole, which was named for former Red Sox shortstop Johnny Pesky, it was hard to tell where it crossed into foul territory. The pole is just 302 feet from home plate. "From our angle, its extremely difficult to tell," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "We felt like it would be inconclusive at best with any type of replay that was available." Umpire Jerry Meals signalled a home run. Rangers manager Ron Washington waited until Ortiz crossed home plate and came out to ask for a review. After a brief chat with home plate umpire Jordan Baker, the crew went to the visitors dugout and returned a short time later to confirm the original ruling. After 44.1 seconds, the play was upheld. "You cant count the big boy out. You cant count this ballclub out," said Red Sox starter Jake Peavy, who did not earn a decision after leaving a 1-1 game in the seventh inning. "Once again, you had the big man up in a big situation and he comes through." Andrew Miller (1-0) earned the victory despite allowing the Rangers to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his second save. Alexi Ogando (0-1) allowed two runs in the loss. "Ortiz is one of the best and one of the clutchest hitters," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus said. The Red Sox scored in the third inning on two walks and a swinging bunt single that was thrown away for an error by pitcher Robbie Ross. The Rangers tied it in the seventh on Mitch Morelands homer and took a 2-1 lead in the eighth when Andrus scored on Alex Rios sacrifice fly. But Ogando walked Jackie Bradley Jr. to lead off the bottom half, and then A.J. Pierzynski blooped a popup down the right-field line that fell in for a single. One out later, Ortiz delivered his 24th career go-ahead homer in the eighth inning or later. "I felt comfortable with Neal up against him," Washington said. "David won." Miller pitched one inning for the win. Ogando struck out four but was charged with two runs on one hit and a walk in his two innings. NOTES: The Red Sox activated LHP Craig Breslow and optioned RHP Brandon Workman to Triple-A Pawtucket. ... Peavy left his only other start this season with the score 2-2 after 6. ... Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, What are your thoughts on the NHLs recommended rule changes from Monday? Do you think theres a way to make goaltender interference - or other on-ice rulings - more clear by going to video review? Does video review help the officials on the ice or take some of the decision making away from them? Which of the recommended rule changes do you think can really help the stripes in a game? Steve Wishie, Toronto Thank you for submitting these very important questions following the competition committee meeting that took place on Monday in New York. The General Managers will be convening sometime in the very near future to discuss these issues. Since it would appear there was little or no input from a knowledgeable officiating mind in attendance, I wish to address the General Managers directly with the following comments specifically related to implementing an expanded video review. I had the pleasure of developing a professional working relationship with each of you; in some cases that relationship began during your playing career and prior to your move into the role of general manager. While it is safe to say that we didnt or wont always agree, please know that I have great respect for the knowledge and care for the game that each of you demonstrates. Having been on that goal-line far too many times to count during my 30-plus year NHL officiating career I know, better than most, the demands, expectations and difficulties that the current crop of referees are experiencing. Goalkeeper interference is the most difficult decision that any referee has to make. The referees, like no time ever before, require your most thoughtful assistance to equip them with the necessary tools to achieve success and uphold the integrity of the game. The time has now come to step outside of any traditional comfort zone and implement video review technology that is available to the rest of us that watch the game on a television monitor, but who are not charged with making a split second decision on these potentially game changing plays. Based on Mathieu Schneiders quote below it would appear that the expectation of "certainty" must be met in order for video review to be expanded beyond the current allowances contained within the rules. "I think the underlying fundamental here is that if youre going to go to video review in a given area, there is the expectation of certainty," said Mathieu Schneider, the NHLPAs special assistant to the executive director. "And its just not there. Its very difficult. The type of things that were talking about, a possible coachs challenge, are things that we might be able to be certain on. But theres still a ton of grey area." I would respectfully submit that language contained throughout the rule book provides the referee(s) with the authority and latitude to exercise his individual judgment in the enforcement of the rules. Phrases such as "In the judgment of the Referee; There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees; The Referee, "at his discretion" may assess; The Referees are provided very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule; The discretion provided (to the Referees) should be exercised realistically…" The referees do not apply a mathematical equation to problem solving.dddddddddddd Instead, with your direction provided to them as to the expected standard of enforcement, the referees exercise their individual judgment to try and make the "correct call" from a position and vantage point that they occupy on the ice in that moment. This does not always achieve "certainty" and the referees perception of the play can quickly be changed if he is provided with a different angle or more precisely through video review. The current process and follow-up protocol of a conference conducted by the four on-ice officials (when utilized) does not achieve any "certainty" that the correct call is ultimately made. Gentlemen, one of the challenges that await you at your next meeting is to achieve some consensus among your group as to what actually constitutes a violation of rule 69—goalkeeper interference? Based on another quote following the competition committee meeting you have your work cut out for you. Even the Game 2 situation brought what Schneider called a "split room" on whether it should have counted or not. "Theres a lot of instances where you have two reasonable people looking at the same video and have two different interpretations, and goalie interference is certainly one of those," Schneider said. "I think the education process is whats going to be most important for the officials, for the players, and I think Colin alluded to, we want to maybe err on the side of the goalie more often. Well, thats the direction we have to give to the officials. "The education process is going to be key. And to have certain telltale signs." Your room cannot be "split" on this crucial issue of players interfering with the goaltender. The players and officials are in need of more concrete direction. Empowering the referee to take a second look at a play with a quick video review, perhaps through a coachs challenge, will help improve these game altering decisions. I also agree that "the education process is going to be "key". The officiating brotherhood can never stop learning, evolving or improving. Give them the tools they need to develop better positioning philosophies so that they consistently know where to go when a player is coming at them or where to go to find the best site line to the goal. A well officiated game is also incumbent upon the utilization of a referees sound judgment. He cannot be stripped of that yet again by a non-official making the call for him from an off-site location. The referees want to get the call right! The couple of minutes it will take for the referee to review the suspected presence of goalkeeper interference, along with some good coaching, will lead to a new age of officiating. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets have signed free agent receiver-kick returner Jacoby Ford. Ford saw limited action last season for Oakland, catching only 13 passes. He was used more on punt and kickoff returns, and figures to handle those chores for the Jets. New York previously signed Eric Decker away from Denver and Decker is expected to start along with holdover Jeremy Kerley. Jets wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal previously worked with Ford in Oakland. The speedy Ford was a fourth-round draft pick in 2010 out of Clemson. He has 57 receptions and three touchdowns in his four pro seasons. Also on Monday, the Jets signed cornerback Dimitri Patterson. Interesting Darryl Fact: He played hockey in Japan: He exxplains that story as well as how the Blackhawks were his favourite team growing up in this clip (aprox 5:45): Once he reached the NHL he became a force with the Blackhawks eventually becoming their captain.dddddddddddd You can see collection of his highlights with the team here (aprox 40 seconds in). Interesting Darryl Fact: He could score: The list goes on and on. Like an very interesting person he also has many different interests. For example. Interesting Darryl Facts: He knows a lot about Bulls and loves good country music This could be one of the most underrated videos on YouTube. It truly shows an at ease Darryl Sutter enjoying the Kinsella Graveldome Bull-a-Rama....yup, you read that right. Its an interview in which Darryl gets into some bull riding talk and talks about brining the Cup home and enjoying some "good country music". Darryl gave longer answers in that interview than he has for the entire post season. Interesting Darryl Fact: He drugged the NHL on TSN crew. Ok, he was just acting. BUT... Interesting Darryl fact: he can act. We know that act will continue for a while still in LA and we look forward to following the coach who we believe is the most interesting man in the world....of hockey. The Vancouver Canucks, who struggled into the Olympic break, will try to restart their season on a positive note as they host The St. Louis Blues The Canucks may have needed the break more than any team as they went into the hiatus having lost seven in a row, including a winless five-game road trip to close out the pre-Olympic schedule. Vancouver has lost seven in a row in regulation for the first time since Dec. 26-Jan. 6 during the 1998-99 campaign and is on its longest skid of any kind since going 0-5-3 from Jan. 9-31, 2009. The Canucks have 63 points on the season, one back of Phoenix and Dallas for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. The break did allow Henrik Sedin some additional time to heal from a rib injury that has held him to just two games since Jan. 18 and caused him to sit out the Olympics. "Henrik is landing this morning," head coach John Tortorella told reporters on Wednesday morning. "We hope hell play tonight." However, forward Ryan Kesler wont play tonight due to a hand injury suffered while blocking a shot for Team USA on Feb. 15. He did not miss time during the Olympics, but had an MRI on Monday and is day-to-day. Vancouver recalled center Kellan Lain from the American Hockey League on Monday. Eddie Lack will get the start in goal. Regardless, the Canucks will look to get on track while playing their next three as the home team. That includes March 2 in the Heritage Classic versus Ottawa to be played at BC Place, which features a retractable roof. The Canucks have won two prior meetings with the Blues this season and are 5-0-2 in the last seven encounters overall. Vancouver also is 3-0-1 in its past four versus St. Louis at home. T.J. Oshie had one of the more memorable experiences during the Winter Olympics, even if the American was unable to get his country a medal. Oshie was part of a Team USA squad that failed to medal in Sochi, though the 27-year-old was briefly the talk of the Olympics after he scored four times during an eight-round shootout to help lift the U.S. to a win over Russia during group play. The forward became a media sensation and U.S. hero for his clutch performance, though he fizzled out like the rest of Team USA, which failed to beat Canada in the semifinals before falling in defeat to Finland in the bronze medal game. "It was pretty crazy after that shootout. Its all a little bitter now that we get back and have nothing to show for it, but it was a pretty cool couple of days after that seeing some of my family on some major TV shows and stuff like that," said Oshie. The Blues do return a number of players who collected medals in Sochi, including gold medal-winning defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester of Team Canada as well as forwards Alexander Steen and Patrik Berglund, who picked up silver with Sweden. Steen continued his solid campaign that has seen him score a career-high 28 goals through just 46 games on the season. St. Louis comes out of the break having gone 3-0-1 in its previous four while winning seven of its last 10. The Blues are even with the idle Chicago Blackhawks for the top spot in the Central standings with 84 points, three behind the Anaheim Ducks for the most in the NHL. The Blues play their next three on the road looking to maintain that success, something Oshie believes his club can do. "I think so. Weve got some guys coming off some pretty big highs, getting a gold and silver medal, and weve got some other guys like myself and (forward David) Backes that are fired up we didnt get anything," Oshie said. "I feel like after big losses like that, it inspires you to work harder. Its always easy coming back to this group of guys." With his name being bandied about ahead of Thursdays trade deadline, Kemp hit a pair of two-run homers to power the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Atlanta Braves 8-4 Tuesday night. His four RBIs were a season high as he surpassed 600 career RBIs with 603. Kemp is hitting .400 in 10 games since the All-Star break. "Im not worried about any rumours," he said. "Im just worried about helping my team win." Kemp is playing right field, where he began his career, having been moved from centre field in the Dodgers crowded outfield. "Id play anywhere right now," he said. "Im just happy to be in the lineup." Yasiel Puig had four hits with two runs scored for the first-place Dodgers, who won their season-high fourth straight. Adrian Gonzalez is also hitting .400 since the break. He had two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. "Thats what we envision offensively," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We got contributions from all over." The Dodgers trailed twice in their first meeting with the Braves since eliminating them in a National League division series last season. Puig came up a home run short of hitting for the cycle, lifting his team-leading average to .317. He struck out in his final at-bat after tying his career high in hits. Los Angeles rallied from a two-run deficit to tie it 4-all on an RBI double by Gonzalez and an RBI single by Carl Crawford in the fifth. That set the stage for outfielders Crawford and Kemp to put the Dodgers ahead in the seventh. Crawford had an RBI groundout to second base and Kemp followed with his second two-run shot over the centre field fence for a 7-4 lead. Gonzalez doubled in another run in the eighth. Brandon League (2-2) got the victory in one inning of relief, allowing one hit and one walk. Kenley Jansen got four outs for his 31st save. Kemps first two-run shot in the second briefly gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. "Matt did a good job hitting that curveball," Braves starter and former Dodger Aaron Harang said. "Thats the Matt Kemp I remember from the first half of 2012." Freddie Freeman, who went 2 for 4, put Atlanta back in front 3-2 in the third with his own two-run homer. Tommy La Stella tied a career-best with three hits and scored a run as the Braves three-game winning streak ended. Anthony Varvaro (3-3) took the loss, giving up three runs and four hits in one relief inning. Dodgers starter Josh Beckett struggled through another outing. The right-hander gave up four runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings,, struck out two and walked one in dropping to 0-5 in his last six home starts.dddddddddddd. Harang faced his old team for the first time since being traded in 2012. The right-hander yielded four runs and nine hits in six innings, struck out three and walked one after going 4-0 in his previous six outings. TRAINERS ROOM Braves: Right fielder Jason Heyward was out of the lineup with lingering soreness in his lower back after straining himself while chasing a foul ball last Thursday. Rookie reliever Shae Simmons was placed on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder. The team recalled reliever Juan Jaime from Triple-A Gwinnett to take the roster spot of Simmons, who accompanied the team for the start of an eight-game, three-city road trip. Dodgers: Left-hander Scott Elbert was reinstated from the 60-day DL and designated him for assignment. He made 15 rehab appearances, including two starts for Rookie-advanced Ogden, Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Albuquerque as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery last year. Elbert was 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA for those minor league affiliates. He last pitched in the majors in August 2012. ON DECK Braves: Left-hander Alex Wood (7-8) starts for the Braves in the middle game of the series. He has pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings in two career games against the Dodgers, allowing one hit and striking out three. Dodgers: Zack Greinke (12-5) starts for the Dodgers. The right-hander is 6-1 at home with a 2.73 ERA and holds opposing batters to a .222 batting average. He is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three career starts against the Braves. WHERES BARNEY? Newly acquired second baseman Darwin Barney could join the Dodgers by Wednesday. He was acquired in a trade with the Cubs on Monday for a player to be named. Barney will give the team depth off the bench. He won a Gold Glove in 2012, but was let go by Chicago after hitting .230 with 16 RBIs in 72 games this season. A PLEASANT GOOD EVENING Dodgers fans will continue hearing that opening line from 86-year-old Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully, who will return to the booth for his record 66th season in 2015. The announcement was made by a trio of players on the stadium video board during the game. HEAD FIRST Braves right fielder Jordan Schafer hit Puig, sliding headfirst, in the head with a throw in the seventh inning with the scored tied 4-all. The throw knocked Puigs helmet off before he barely got his hand safely on the base. QUOTE OF THE DAY "I made some bad pitches over the middle of the plate that he could hit," Harang said of Puig. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. I will keep this very simple. Please explain how Brendan Gallaghers goal was disallowed in Tuesdays game between the Devils and Canadiens. Thank you for your time,Brad Greuel Brad: The very simple answer is that, in the collective judgment of the men staffing the NHL Situation Room last night where majority rules, it was decided that Brendan Gallagher used his right skate to kick the puck into the net! I, like you Brad and many other fans that tweeted their confusion following this decision, am still attempting to find clear evidence of the distinct kicking motion that Brendan Gallagher is claimed to have used to boot the puck into the net. This review further demonstrates the wide differences in judgment that can result from one person to another when making officiating specific decisions. Since video review is not an exact science, sometimes there is no clear cut right or wrong answer for these men to make. Whenever that occurs, their decision becomes "inconclusive." The call is then thrown back to the referee on the ice for his final decision on the matter; which in almost every case would revert to the refs initial call. On this play, the decision on the ice was that a legal goal had been scored by Brendan Gallagher. Once the play went to video review it didnt matter what the referee decided on the ice or what any of us elsewhere thought the call should be. The only judgment that counts is imposed by the men in the Situation Room in Toronto. Im not suggesting that video review decisions are easy to make; especially for men that didnt have to make these types of decisions during their playing careers. Some plays are definitely more difficult than others to judge. It is for these very reasons that I continue to suggest video review should be conducted by the referees at ice level. Let them make the final decision since it is in their job description and more specifically what they are paid to do. It is also an added responsibility that I believe the referees would welcome. Im still looking for Brendan Gallaghers "distinct kicking motion" when he attempted to one-timer on Lars Ellers centering pass at the top of the goal crease after Martin Brodeur deflected the puck with his blocker. I saw the puck miss the forward motion of Gallaghers stick, hit his shin pad and rest well behind his body mass near his right skate blade and as he battled for position in tight quarters with Devils defenceman Andy Greene. Im still looking for that distinct kicking motion as Gallagher rotated his body in a spinning pivot move to reset himself following the wide stance one-time shot attempt. Yes, I do see the puck contact Gallaghers back skate blade positioned well behind his body and through this natural move with Greene on his right shoulder. The puck does accelerate as a result of Gallaghers rotational spin and passes between Brodeurs legs and into the net. I see referee Tom Kowal signal a goal from near perfect position with a very good sightline. Sorry Brad, youll have to bear with me as the play goes to video review; Im still looking for a "distinct kicking motion!" Chad Ruhwedel Jersey . Amateurs Sam Waley-Cohen and Nina Carberry are now free to ride in the Grand National at Aintree, after the British Horseracing Authority ruled suspensions due to apply on that day will not stand owing to ambiguous wording of the Rule. Waley-Cohen was banned for seven days following his ride on Long Run at Carlisle on Sunday, while Carberry was similarly hit after her winning effort aboard On The Fringe at Cheltenham.National day, April 9, was due to be part of Waley-Cohens ban, and was the concluding date of Carberrys - but the BHA tweeted: Owing to ambiguous wording of the Rule, suspensions imposed on Sam Waley-Cohen and Nina Carberry will no longer apply on Grand National day. This decision follows a representation to this effect being made by Sam Waley-Cohen today.Waley-Cohen had on Thursday appealed against his ban on now-retired former Gold Cup winner Long Run.Waley-Cohen sent his mount straight into the lead on what was his first start for 672 days and while he jumped well for much of the three-mile journey, a couple of significant errors led to him coming under pressure.Long Run looked sure to finish third after jumping the final fence, but Waley-Cohen appeared to stop riding for a few strides after the last before pushing him out again, being passed by Barachois Silver and Durban Gold and beating just one rival home.Long Run was retired on the spot, while Waley-Cohen was found guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing in that he failed to ride out on a horse that could have finished third.Having viewed the film of the race and heard all the evidence, a BHA disciplinary panel, while accepting Long Run was tiring, felt that he could have finished third - but for the fact that Waley-Cohen stopped riding for 12 strides on the run-in.The dates of the suspension were due to include the Grand National and the Fox Hunters Chase at Aintree, although the latter still stands. The panel ordered Waley-Cohens deposit be forfeited as no new evidence was produced, other than that which was considered by the Carlisle stewards on the day.Waley-Cohen is the most successful rider in modern history over the National fences at Aintree, winning six times, including the Topham Handicap Chase over the daunting obstacles 12 months ago.The National confusion centred around the Pinsent Masons Handicap Hurdle, which is restricted to conditional and amateur jockeys.Waley-Cohen told Press Association Sport: The rules as they are written say they (amateur riders) are banned on a day when there is an amateur chase or an amateur hurdle, but the race after the National is for amateurs and conditionals. That means it is not an amateur race. Its been a bit of a roller-coaster of a day. From all the disappointment and everything else, the hope is now there. All I need now is a horse.Carberry is also very much in demand over the National obstacles, completing the course four times from five tries, most recently on First Lieutenant last year.A statement from the BHA read: Having received representation from Sam Waley-Cohen today, following his unsuccessful appeal against the seven-day suspension imposed on him by the Carlisle Stewards on 20 March 2016, the British Horseracing Authority has this evening amended the dates of the suspensions imposed on both Sam Waley-Cohen and Nina Carberry to the extent that they will no longer apply on Grand National day, April 9, 2016.The representation from Sam Waley-Cohen suggested that the way in which the Schedule of the Rules was worded was ambiguous. While the intention of the Schedule is to suspend amateur riders when races are taking place in which they can participate, the BHA accept that the various changes to the Schedule over the years mean that the Rule is open to different interpretation. The ban was previously scheduled to apply on Grand National day because of the existence of a hurdle race at Aintree which is confined to amateur riders and conditional jockeys. However, the specific wording of Schedule (B)1 10.1 of the Rules of Racing states that a riding suspension imposed on an Amateur Rider will apply:10.1.2 when the Rule Contravention occurs in a steeple chase, hurdle race or National Hunt Flat Race on those days:10.1.2.1 when an Amateur Riders steeple chase, or10.1.2.2 when an Amateur Riders hurdle race, or10.1.2.3 when a National Hunt Flat Race confined to Amateur Riders and Conditional Jockeys is run.The representation pointed to the fact that the clause relating to National Hunt Flat races refers specifically to races confined to Amateur Riders and Conditional Jockeys, however the clause relating to hurdle races refers only to races confined to Amateur Riders.Having now identified the anomaly, the BHA will take steps to amend the Schedule to ensure future amateur suspensions correctly reflect the aforementioned intention.Waley-Cohens new dates of suspension are April 3-5 inclusive, April 7, 11, 12 and 15. Carberry sits out April 1-5, April 7 and 11. Jimmie Ward 49ers Jersey . The two teams will play through the completion of the game starting at 5pm ct on Wednesday. AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Nate Marquardt tapped out James Te Huna in the first round of their main-event bout on Saturday at "UFC Fight Night: Te Huna vs. Marquardt," New Zealands first UFC card. Te Huna, who in 2010 became the UFCs first New Zealander, thrilled the crowd with his walk-in, which featured Maori warriors performing a traditional haka war dance. The energy carried into the cage, as both Te Huna and Marquardt started in rapid fashion. But after a few big exchanges on the feet, the end would come on the floor. Battling in the clinch against the cage, Marqaurdt (33-13-2) threw Te Huna (16-8) to the canvas and moved immediately into mount. When Te Huna rolled to escape, Marquardt went to the back and then slipped off to the side, trapping the arm and extending it to earn a submission win with 26 seconds left in the opening round. "An armbar was not part of my plan," said Marquardt. "It just sort of happened." The nights heavyweight co-feature was a little light on action, but Jared Rosholt (11-1) picked up a one-sided decision win over Australian fan-favourite Soa Palelei (21-4). It was Rosholts wrestling pedigree that earned him the win, utilizing a grinding grappling attack to bring Palelei repeatedly to the floor and preventing him from really ever launching any sort of attack. The crowd often booed the slow-paced fight, but at the end of 15 minutes, it was clear Rosholt had done enough to win the fight, and he was awarded the victory with three scores of 30-27. "I was a little disappointed with that win," Rosholt admitted. "I had a vision to dominate, which I did, but not in the fashion I wanted. "My last few fights have gone the distance, which is disappointing but proves that I have the conditioning, which is definitely an advantage at this weight class." In a grappling-heavy featherweight matchup, Charles Oliveira (18-4) scored an impressive submission win over fellow jiu-jitsu ace Hatsu Hioki (27-8-2). The entertaining matchup saw both men transition and sweep to dominant positions on the floor while seeking submission opportunities. Multiple attempts came from both men, but it was a modified guillotine choke in the second round that sealed the victory for Oliveira. Trapped in the hold, Hioki was forced to tap out for the first time in his career. "My opponent tonight was very tough and challenging," Oliveira admitted after the fight. "I studied all of his fights and knew he would be tough. "I know we are in New Zealand, but you always hear Brazilians in the crowd. They are the most passionate fight fans and always make lot of noise. Tonight, they inspired me to take the win." In the nights first main-card matchup, New Zealand native Robert Whittaker (13-4) picked up an impressive decision win over fellow welterweight Mike Rhodes (6-3). Whittaker, the former winner of "The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes," was the better striker throughout the three-round affair, using crisp boxing to pick apart his opponent with a sharp jab and powerful right hand. Rhodes was a game opponent, offering counters until the end and never seeming to slow, but Whittakers relentless attack earned him all three rounds, and he was awarded an unanimous-decision win with scores of 30-27 across the board. "The game plan was to throw as many weapons at my opponent as possible," Whittaker said after the win. "Hats off to Mike -- he gave a lot and definitely took a lot of shots. I like to think I punch hard, so props to him to keep on going." Larry Johnson Jersey . ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- In a battle of fan-favorite heavyweights, it was the power of Roy Nelson that proved supreme Friday as he earned a first-round knockout win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The bout served as the main event of the "UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Nelson" card at the du Arena. Nelson (21-9) was in control from the start, working in frequent jabs and occasionally launching his right hand. One of those shots scored flush in the early stages of the fight and Nogueira (34-9-1) went tumbling to the floor, but Nelson didnt rush the finish and instead allowed his opponent to stand and re-engage. The patience paid off as Nelson delivered a thunderous right a short time later that saw Nogueira fall stiff as he hit the mat. Nelson didnt bother to wait for referee Leon Roberts to step in, raising his hand in victory at the 3:30 mark of the first round. "I was expecting a five-round battle but things ended a little early," Nelson said. "My game plan was to throw more lefts and mix in some takedowns and eventually try to win each round. I didnt think I was going to be the hometown favorite but Abu Dhabi really was behind me tonight." In the nights co-feature, veteran featherweight Clay (The Carpenter) Guida outworked Japans Tatsuya (Crusher) Kawajiri for a win via unanimous decision. Guida (31-11) was relentless from the start, pressing the pace and looking to strike but often finding himself in a clinch with his opponent. Guida took advantage of those situations by locking the body and dumping his opponent to the canvas, even as Kawajiri (33-8-2) looked repeatedly to secure an armlock from the position. The two went back and forth for the full 15 minutes. Kawajiri always looked dangerous, but Guida kept a high pace until the final bell and enjoyed too many dominant positions to be denied a victory. Afterward, Guida called out Irish featherweight prospect Conor McGregor. "After your injury, once youre healed up, you want to fight a real man, there aint no gold at the end of that rainbow, man," Guida said in his post-fight interview. "Just a chest-hair sandwich from a mullet with a caveman at the end of it." In a welterweight contest, Ryan LaFlare looked impressive in a unanimous-decision win over John (Doomsday) Howard, though the contest was marred by an accidental foul. LaFlare (11-0) proved the better wrestler in the three-round matchup, repeatedly taking his opponent to the floor. But in the second round, LaFlare landed an inadvertent knee to the groin that sent Howard (22-9) to the canvas and threatened to end the fight. Howard chose to fight on but was in clear pain for the remainder of the bout. After earning the decision win, LaFlare admitted he was disappointed in how the incident played out but was happy to get a win. In the nights first main-card matchup, lightweight Ramsey Nijem (10-4) earned a scintillating victory over the previously undefeated Beneil Dariush (7-1). Nijem, who entered the cage holding a Palestinian flag, scored with a clean left hook in the late stages of the first round, and Dariush never recovered. Nijem seized the opportunity and rushed forward with additional strikes, finally earning the TKO call at the 4:20 mark of the first round. "I wanted this to be violent," Nijem said after the win. "I want everybody to be scared in my weight class." Aaron Colvin Texans Jersey . Lee might be able to return as soon as hes eligible to come off the DL, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said late Tuesday. "Its never good news when you lose one of your No. 1 pitchers, but its pretty mild," Amaro said. When Lee underwent an MRI on Tuesday in Philadelphia, there were concerns the left-hander might become the latest major league pitcher to be sidelined by a serious injury. More than a dozen have already have undergone Tommy John elbow surgery this year, including All-Stars Jose Fernandez, Patrick Corbin, Josh Johnson and Matt Moore. "The Tommy John thing is not what it is," Lee said. "That was good." Lee pitched 6 2-3 innings in a win over Cincinnati on Sunday. He said his elbow began to bother him after he threw a career-high 128 pitches in an 11-hit, complete-game loss against the Braves on April 16. "After the game it was pretty sore," he said. "We started dooing some treatment on it and it acted like it was doing a little better, and this past start I started feeling it the last couple of innings just about every throw, and obviously it was pretty sore the next day.dddddddddddd "It was definitely concerning that it was there on every throw. With as much season as we have left, I didnt feel that I could keep pitching." Lee rejoined the Phillies in Miami after he was diagnosed with a grade one/two strain of his flexor tendon. "Thats better news than the other," teammate A.J. Burnett said. "Youre happy for that." The 35-year-old Lee is 4-4 this season with a 3.18 ERA in 68 innings. Hell rest for a week and is expected to resume throwing after that. "We dont really know until we get there, but hopefully in a week its gone and I start playing catch, and in another week Ill start being in games," Lee said. Amaro declined to say who will start for Lee on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lee has thrown more than 200 innings every season since 2008, when he was the AL Cy Young Award winner. Welcome to a very unique UFC Fight Night breakdown. This event is going down May 10th in Cincinnati. The main event is a welterweight fight that will give the winner a huge step on the path to a title shot. This weeks Takedown pits me, Jordan Cieciwa (@FitCityJordan) against 11 year-old Gabriella McAlpine (@WebSodaGirl) on the picks. Gabriella (Gabzilla) McAlpine is one of the biggest fans of MMA out there. Creating a name for herself online by interviewing some of the biggest stars in MMA, shes someone to watch as she hits the mats and learns the sport herself. We invite you to get on twitter and join the battle. #TeamGabZilla or #TeamJC. Wed love to hear your picks and argue our decisions. Matt Brown vs. Erick Silva JC: Well, Im a fan of experience. That means in this one Ive got to go with Matt Brown. Hes 18-11, and on a six-fight win streak. Silva is 3-3. I believe Silva has the advantage when it comes to the ground game, but not when you take into account the striking. I dont see this going all five rounds. Matt Brown will get his KO. Gabzilla: I think Erick Silva will take the win. He is evenly matched as a striker but on the ground be is more technical and has finished more fights using grappling. Lorenz Larkin vs. Constantinos Philippou JC: Costas Philippou is one of those "never out of the fight" fighters. He hits a ton, and has the ability to stay on his feet. Lorenz Larkin is an excellent all-round fighter, but with the striking edge and toughness going to Philippou I think this night will end mid-second round with Philippou getting a solid KO. Gabzilla: I believe that Lorenz Larkin will take the win. This is an evenly matched fight that is so close on paper, but I have to give a slight edge to Larkin. Daron Cruickshank vs. Erik Koch JC: Erik Koch and Daron Cruickshank should be a barn burner of a fight. Im actually a huge Koch fan and he gets the wins any way he can. Hes a great all-around athlete and if his striking isnt working he can take this to the ground. Cruickshank is an aggressive fighter. I think its going to be his downfall. Im expecting Koch to end this in the third round with a submission. Gabzilla: This is another very evenly matched fight. But my pick is Cruickshank, the Detroit Superstar, because of his striking, aggression and takedown defence. Neil Magny vs. Tim Means JC: Tim Means should end this night with a decision win over Neil Magny. I dont see this one ending before we reach the end of three rounds, but Means has the experience and striking skill to make sure he wins this one. Gabzilla: I will have to give it to Tim Means because of his record. He is so much more experienced in MMA with a 20-5-1 record as opposed to Magny with only a 9-4 record. Means has great hands and I think that will dictate the fight. Soa Palelei vs. Ruan Potts JC: If you have been watching heavyweight MMA then you know that the Australian heavyweight Soa Palelei is the real deal. I never count a fighter out, however, Ruan Potts just does not have what it takes to survive a Palelei striking onslaught. Expect an aggressive first round KO. Gabzilla: Hands down I think that Soa Palelei will win by KO. Based on experience, his striking capabilities and aggression. Trey Burton Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Vintavious Cooper took over the Beef O Bradys Bowl in the fourth quarter in a performance reminiscent of a former East Carolina running back. Just dont bring up that comparison to Cooper. The senior rushed for a career-best 198 yards and scored two touchdowns, leading the Pirates to a 37-20 victory over Ohio on Monday. Cooper broke the Beef O Bradys Bowl record for yards rushing while becoming the first East Carolina player to win a MVP award in a bowl game since Tennessee Titans star Chris Johnson ran for 223 yards against Boise State in the 2007 Hawaii Bowl. "Its a great accomplishment and I have to really give it up to the guys up front and all the work they did. When I found out I was close to 100 yards after the first quarter I told them and they got excited about it," Cooper said. "I would never compare myself to Chris Johnson because I really admire CJ and I look up to CJ. Hes done so much for me. Im just happy my name is next to his in any way." The Pirates (10-3) grabbed the lead for good on the first of Coopers two touchdowns runs in the fourth quarter, a 31-yard burst with just under 10 minutes remaining. East Carolinas Shane Carden threw for 273 yards and one TD and also scored on a pass reception. "All season weve been about playing big in the fourth quarter and this was going to be a game that we needed to grind out and fight to win because Ohio is a real tough team thats well coached," Carden said. Cam Worthy caught an early 5-yard scoring pass from Carden, and then took a lateral and threw 14 yards back to Carden for a fourth-quarter TD that made it 31-20. Cooper put it well out of reach, finding an opening off left tackle and racing 22 yards for his second TD. Tyler Tettleton and Derrius Vick threw scoring passes for Ohio (7-6), which overcame an early two-touchdown deficit to lead 20-17 before Cooper put East Carolina back in front before an announced crowd of 20,053 at Tropicana Field. Breon Allen also scored on a 2-yard run for East Carolina, which won six of its final seven games to finish with the second-most victories in school history. Carden set the school record for single-season yards passing with a 13-yard throw to Isaiah Jones on the drive ended with Allens TD, making it 14-0. He completed 29 of 45 passes while boosting his season total to 4,139 yards, bbreaking Dominique Davis record total for the Pirates.dddddddddddd Cooper ran for 90 yards in the opening quarter alone, becoming the third running back in East Carolina history to rush for 1,000 in consecutive seasons. Justin Hardy, meanwhile, had eight receptions for 59 yards, setting a school record for yards receiving in a season. He finished with nine catches, giving him 114 receptions for 1,284 yards. Ohio battled back after a slow start. Tettleton and Vick each threw a touchdown pass in a five-minute span to make it 14-all early in the second quarter. Tettleton got the Bobcats going with a 26-yard completion to Daz Patterson on a flea flicker, and then found Patterson for a 17-yard TD on the following play. Vick and Donte Foster combined for an 80-yard score on Ohios next offensive play for the longest scoring pass in Beef O Bradys Bowl history. "Theyre a very, very physical football team on the defensive side, and very strong. Generally youre not going to traditionally line up and just run the ball right at them and feel like youre going to be successful," Ohio coach Frank Solich said. "We had to come up with ways that we felt we could continue to make plays and then hopefully have our fair share of big plays." Foster finished with six catches for 160 yards, earning most valuable player honours for Ohio. Tettleton was 21 of 40 for 228 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. East Carolina rebounded from a triple-overtime loss to Tulane in October to win five of its final six regular-season games. Ohio stumbled in November losses to Buffalo, Bowling Green and Kent State before finishing with a 51-23 rout of Massachusetts that helped the Bobcats secure the trip to St. Petersburg. Ohio accepted the bid to the Beef O Bradys bowl after the American Athletic Conference was unable to fulfil its bowl commitments. Ball State lost to Central Florida in last years game, making the trip when the Big East was unable to supply a team. In denying Ohio a third straight bowl victory under Solich, East Carolina stopped a four-game losing streak in bowl games, a skid that began after Johnson led the Pirates to the win in the Hawaii Bowl. "A win would have made this a whole lot better," Foster said. "It would have made it very tremendous, but I felt like our guys played their hearts out." Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco means Mauricio Pochettino’s men can no longer progress in the Champions League. It’s the continuation of a worrying run of form for Spurs, writes Adam Bate… Pochettino argued that you can only smile after Tottenham bounced back from a lacklustre first-half to earn a point at Arsenal earlier this month. Their fans added laughter to the smiles after turning another derby around against West Ham at the weekend. But Tuesdays defeat to Monaco showed theres also a serious side to Tottenhams travails.Of course, this is no crisis club. Spurs are the only team in the Premier League who remain unbeaten in the competition. But nor could the 2-1 defeat in the principality, one that confirmed the team will not be progressing to the Champions League knockout stages, be regarded as a shock result either. Spurs are struggling not soaring this season. Tottenham crash out Tottenhams 2-1 defeat at Monaco ends their hopes of Champions League progress. Saturdays scarcely deserved win was their first in eight. The fluency that so marked their title tilt in the spring is long gone and explanations are offered as regularly as the fixtures pile up. Its the challenge of the Champions League. Its the Wembley home games. Its injuries to key players like Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld. Its new players needing time to settle. All of these things should be seen as reasons rather excuses. Chelsea and Liverpool are enjoying far greater preparation time. Pochettino can show videos to his players but the opportunity to drill them relentlessly on the training ground has been lost. The problem is we dont have time to train too much, he admits. The priority is to rest and recover. Tottenhams players are struggling to regain their fluency this term Wembley has been a factor in their Champions League disappointment. The problem is home games, as simple as that, said Hugo Lloris this week. Its very clear. The ease with which Monaco cut through Spurs on Tuesday challenged that theory but nevertheless, had they so much as drawn their two Wembley games, theyd be on course for the last 16.The disruptive impact of losing both Kane and Alderweireld can hardly be overstated either, particularly when neither man missed a Premier League game last season.Replacements Kevin Wimmer and Vincent Janssen have offered nowhere near the same quality - but could that ever really have been expected of back-up figures given the abilities of the missing men? The confidence, belief and fluency just seems to have drained out of them. Paul Walsh, Sky Sports And yet, still there are issues that nag away. While Pochettinos reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the game has been too hard earned to be easily lost, it must be acknowledged that mistakes have been made too.The coach is striving to get the balance right in rotating his squad but its difficult to be persuaded that he is getting it spot on.With Alderweireld missing, Jan Vertonghens inclusion surely became of paramount importance against a Monaco side that had scored 28 goals in their previous eight matches. Not since Alderweirelds arrival had Spurs gone into either a Premier League or a Champions League fixture without one of the two Belgians in the starting line-up. Harry Kane did equalise from the spot but Monaco soon retook the lead Instead, the experienced Vertonghen was left on the bench as Wimmer and Eric Dier were paired at the back. Alongside him among the substitutes was Kyle Walker as Pochettino opted to go into the game with only Danny Rose of his first-choice back four. It was a gamble befitting the Monte Carlo surroundings and it did not pay off.Dier, looking as uncomfortable in defence as hed appeared assured in midfield, was guilty of a wild swing at the ball in conceding the first-half penalty that was saved by the brilliant Lloris.Wimmers woes, meanwhile, show no sign of coming to an end - unable to intercept crosses as might be expected of a man of his height let alone track runners at pace. Hugo Lloris made nine saves against Monaco - the joint-most by a goalkeeper in this seasons Champions League. But its not all about individual errors. Tactically too, Spurs have issues that need to be addressed. The lack of width in the team is supposed to be resolved in an attacking sense by the forays of the full-backs, but against Monaco both Rose and Kieran Trippier found themselves badly exposed defensively by the absence of meaningful cover ahead of them. This was a key factor in Monacos match-winning goal. Straight from the kick-off, right-back Djibril Sidibe was able to overlap untracked leaving Rose in a two-on-one situation and unable to cut out the cross. On the other side of the pitch, left-winger Thomas Lemar had the freedom to pick his spot with no sign of any support for Trippier. Highlights of Tottenhams 3-2 Premier League win over West Ham Perhaps Pochettino does not feel he has the players to do things any differently right now. Certainly, wide options Moussa Sissoko and Georges-Kevin NKoudou have shown little so far to suggest they should be entrusted with such roles. And the Argentine at least seems well aware of the need for his Spurs project to evolve more than two years into the job.Hes spoken of the need to be flexible and to play in different ways in different games recently, backing that up by going with three at the back against Arsenal. But his admission that he cannot rotate the way wed like to rotate the players suggest that his selections are being governed by issues of fitness rather than tactical preference. The 26-year-old from Germany, who fell from ninth in the world in 2011 to 177th two years later, capped a stunning run to the Family Circle Cup title on Sunday, Petkovics first win in three years. She outlasted Jana Cepelova 7-5, 6-2 in the finals. "I just wanted to get back to why I started playing tennis, because I had fun playing it and because I love the sport," said Petkovic, whose progresses was slowed by several injuries that cost her much of 2012. The climb back was painful at times. Petkovic wanted to quit the game after falling in French Open qualifying last year and wondered if shed ever feel success at the sport again. So she decided to play for fun and not for the wins. "I just needed to remind myself and it came together this week, and Im very thrilled about that," she said. Petkovic entered this one seeded 14th, ranked 40th in the world and with few expectations about her first clay-court event of the season. Instead, Petkovics powerful forehand and grind-it-out mindset helped her oust three straight top 10 seeds in No. 4 Sabine Lisicki, No. 9 Lucie Safarova and No. 6 Eugenie Bouchard on the way to the finals. Petkovic used that same formula against Cepelova, a rising 20-year-old from Slovakia competing in her first WTA final. Cepelova led 5-4 and was a point away from capturing the first set. But Petkovic rallied to win that game and begin a run of eight in a row to take control of the match. "I have to let loose and play like I can," she told herself. Petkovic was energized after winning the crucial game and quickly broke serve to move in front. She took the set a game later and continued her run to build a 5-0 lead that Cepelova could not overcome. For Petkovic, the victory was more gratifying than her two other career WTA wins because of all her struggles. This "is a different feeling," she said. "Now, Im much more grateful. Its more rewarding." Petkovic dropped to the ground when Cepelovas final shot landed out of play. She jogged to the net to hug her opponent, waved to the crowd and did a celebration dance as fans applauded.dddddddddddd She let her fun side shine through all week. She joked in postgame comments she might get a bit crazy on the flight back home, dancing with flight attendants and drinking champagne from her latest trophy. "Im going to have champagne and I dont even drink champagne," she said. "But Im going to have it for the heck of it." Petkovic earned $120,000 for her third career WTA victory, which was her first since winning in Strasbourg in 2011. Petkovics victory closed a week of surprises at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Only one of the tournaments top 10 seeds made it through to the final four and it was the first time a WTA tournament included three semifinalists 20 years old or younger since Amelia Island in 2008. Cepelova had a stunning run of her own, topping world No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday night to set the stage for plenty more unexpected results. Cepelova became the Family Circle Cups first unseeded finalist since Elena Vesnina in 2011. Cepelova didnt expect a long visit here, arriving without her coach, trainers and hitting partners. She typically ordered room service at the hotel and had to scrape around to find hitting partners to warm up before matches. "Before the tournament, if somebody told me youll be in the tournament finals I would not believe them," Cepelova said with a smile. "But it was a really nice week." Cepelova is also projected to move up some 30 spots in the rankings to around 50th in the world when the new list comes out next week, the WTA said. Petkovic won the title in her second appearance here. She had reached the round of 16 last year, but had to withdraw from a match against Caroline Wozniacki. She was on the phone with her father, Zoran, after the win. Father and daughter now have Palmetto State success in common. Zoran Petkovic was one of the leading singles players at the University of South Carolina in the early 1980s. He told his daughter stories of how Americans on campus loved wearing "cowboy boots and blue jeans," she recalled, laughing. "He was very happy, very emotional," Andrea Petkovic said of their phone call. "I dont know if he was tearing up, though." BALTIMORE -- The Tampa Bay Rays usually work their way around the bases one at a time, so they took great delight in putting on a power-hitting display against a team known for the long ball. Desmond Jennings opened the game with the first of Tampa Bays three home runs off Wei-Yin Chen, and the Rays got an impressive pitching performance from former Oriole Erik Bedard in a 5-4 victory over Baltimore on Saturday. Tampa Bay built a five-run lead in the fourth inning, then held off a late comeback bid to improve to 3-8 against the Orioles this season. Logan Forsythe and rookie Kevin Kiermaier each hit a two-run shot against Chen (7-3), who lasted only 3 1-3 innings in the shortest outing of his three-year career. Of the 15 home runs Chen has yielded this season, five have come against the light-hitting Rays. Tampa Bay started the day tied for 25th in the majors with 59 home runs and hit only two its previous nine games. Half the Rays 10 hits were for extra bases, including a triple by Ben Zobrist and a double by Ryan Hanigan. "Thats more like what we expect on a consistent basis, to play that game," manager Joe Maddon said. "Against this team here, fangs out late in the game, its nice to beat them that way." Nick Markakis and Manny Machado homered for the Orioles, who have a major league-leading 40 long balls in June. But it wasnt enough to beat the last-place Rays, who can win the four-game series with a victory Sunday. Bedard (4-5) struck out seven in a season-high seven-plus innings. The 35-year-old lefty gave up three runs and five hits against the team he began his career with in 2002. He walked none, and 68 of his 87 pitches were strikes. "Thats probably the best strike-ball ratio Ive ever thrown in my life," Bedard said. "The biggest thing was the first-pitch strikes and after that, I continued to throw strikes. I mixed in fastball, changeup, curveball and I came out on top." He was pulled after giving up a two-run homer to Machado in the eighth. Adam Jones added an RBI single off Jake McGee, who subsequently retired Nelson Cruz with two outs and runners on the corners. McGee returned in the ninth to earn his third save -- the second in two days. Chen gave up a season-high five runs, seven hits and a pair of walks. The Taiwanese left-hander was 4-0 in nine starts since May 3 and 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two games against Tampa Bay. "For every game, you dont want to give up any home runs," Chen said through a translator. "Lately, Ive been leaving more pitches up in the zone. Maybe the opponent hitters are studying me more than they used to, so if I didnt make the adjustment necessary, the results are going to look bad. So Im going to look at that." On Chens fourth pitch, a 91 mph fastball, Jennings hit his seventh career leadoff homer to put the Rays ahead for good. Prior to the at-bat, Jennings was 4 for 23 (.174) against Chen. In the second, Sean Rodriguez singled and Forsythe followed with his first home run in 142 at-bats this season. Forsythe went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored twice. Tampa Bay made it 5-0 in the fourth when Forsythe singled and Kiermaier drove a 1-2 pitch into the right-field bleachers. It was the fifth home run of the season for Kiermaier and the first by a left-hander against Chen. "I actually like the way weve been swinging the bats," Kiermaier said. "It was one of those things today -- Desmond hit the leadoff home run then Logan came up clutch and hit that other one." Bedard retired 10 straight batters before Markakis homered on a 1-2 pitch in the sixth.
